Always fun to see these vids about my country. It amazes me that american kids cant play outside without supervision, I’ve heard this from other americans too.

In this respect, it is impossible to compare the Netherlands to America. I'll admit that things have changed since I was born (early 60's) but for the most part that is due to development. When I was a kid we had woods and Orange groves and open areas but raising my kids in the same area most of that had turned into housing. So, while I played in the woods, they played in the neighborhood. With that said, the average person from the Netherlands can not even begin to conceive of the amount of suburban area we have. I suspect if you normalize it, 80% of American kids have more freedom than the kids in the Netherlands. We don't all live in Chicago or NYC. My kids could play anywhere in the neighborhood, walk to school, drive to school and go where ever they wanted. I live in Orlando, Florida. Certainly, they don't have the freedom I had because cell phones did not exist when I was a child. If you compare the Netherlands to the four largest liberal states in the US your comments are right but that leaves 46 more states with far more land/area.

@@g4l430 its not about land mass/size, its about being able to have kids at the playground without supervision and stuff. Everyone knows u should tell ur kids not to go to the huge forests (or other areas they can get lost easily if they dont have the appropriate age) and what not.

@@accidentalgenius8252 So funny. When I was a kid my mom used a cow bell. When it rang, kids who heard it would find me an let me know. More than likely I was out in the woods (I never said huge forest, it was an acre or so of woods). Simply stated, a million people in NYC vs a million people in NY vs a million people in Texas does make a difference in how the children are raised. The point I was making is that when I was raised my playground was a 1 acre wood. For my kids, it was a 1 acre neighborhood. For the people in NYC it was a city block. You totally miss the point. When a parent tells the kids to stay in the neighborhood it really, really can mean something totally different. Don't talk to strangers is the same everywhere. I would agree that dealing with this is more complicated than it use to be but a kid who grows up on a ranch really has different issues that one who grows up in Detroit.

@@accidentalgenius8252 And I'll agree that the Netherlands are engaged in a great social experiment and are having to deal with the complications of a significant influx of immigrants. They (the Netherlands) have positioned themselves to be the "canary in the coal mine" and they acknowledge this. I praise them for their brave approach and I pray that through wisdom they find a way to represent a better approach. That's a significant challenge that I hope they are successful.

This is great, I'm happy you all seem to have an overall good experience staying here in the Netherlands. Proud, that even in these turbulent times my fellow dutchies seem to be able to help you all feel a bit more at home. It's ok here to be yourself, don't get scared or offended too soon if my countrymen are too upfront or way too direct. It's our nature. Also, if your Dutch friends make fun of you, tease you...or even if they make (normally) hurtful comments, they're fond of you. (For the German lady, "was man neckt, Das liebt sich" is applicable to us dutchies as well) I wish you all a great stay, whether it's temporary or indefinite. Good luck to you all.

well actually in some countries you can find stuff both written in the local language plus some other foreign language, like for example in Brazil everything is written in Portuguese of course but most of the products at the grocery store come with the Spanish translations right beside it, even though both languages are pretty similar. I guess that's what she meant, maybe she expected stuff written both in Dutch and English since most people there can speak English fluently.

I think there is a very notable difference. First of all: hierarchy. Pretty strict in Germany, opposite in NL. Then there is humor. Then there is the fact that Germans seem to be pretty serious at least at work all the time. Now Denmark or Scandinavia is a lot more similar to us, but Germans while of course not being some sort of alien at all are pretty different.
