Cause we're tiny and we usually complain about everything that ISN'T right in our country. Through these videos, I've learned a lot about my own country and how it is being viewed. I think it's interesting to us to hear people boast about our small country, when we have yet to see those good sides of it ourselves. For me at least.😂

@@namitales Exactly. We complain a lot about our country, our government, the weather et cetera. It can make the Netherlands look worse than it actually is. It's good to sometimes watch these kind of videos to rediscover that our country isn't so awful after all, and find our appreciation back.

i think that may also be partially because the netherlands usually got confused with germany a lot. Depends a bit on what strata of society you're from. And herein lies a truth even most Dutch people are not that conscious off. Yes, Dutch society is rather egalitarian but there definitely are classes around education, income, where you live and even ethnicity (which is of course very controversial). As you say yourself, wearing expensive clothes with big logos is seen as trashy. Why? Because you actually associate it with lower social classes. This shows that you are in fact conscious about class. It's all very subtle and not often discusses in public like in British society, for example. But it's there.

Another thing often misunderstood about Dutch directness is that it is only in the moment. Germans are equally direct, but if they tell you you did something awful, you know the will hold that against you in the future. Not in the Netherlands. If you bought awful shoes, we just tell you the shoes are awful, and than it is gone. Over. Done with. History. Fresh start. THAT is unique about the infamous Dutch directness. Many anglo-saxon and german people cannot understand this. They think that if you get such a direct remark, it is not only about the shoes, but also (a bit) about you as a person. No. It is about the shoes, nothing else. I agree that the same words can be rude. But then you hear it in the voice, the same words then spoken sharply, or sarcastically. That is true.
@josphineogugua2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for clarifying this. I personal appreciate the Dutch directness. I’ve come to understand that most times it comes from a place of sincerity and nothing more 🤗

I can confirm something for you on your last point! The traffic is literally designed to be safe for children. Somewhere last century when cars grew in popularity, the number of traffic accidents skyrocketed, especially amongst children. The government found this unacceptable and they purposefully made that transition to a bicycle culture we are now known for. The entire traffic system got redesigned to be safe and to accomodatie ALL traffic equally(cars, bikes, pedestrians and other), whereas other countries are often designed for the cars. In a lot of cases the bikes actually get priority over cars.

10 reasons why I love Nigeria as a Dutchman. 1) warm 2) Less rain 3) The food! ... just kidding, haven't been yet. Would you recommend going to Nigeria for vacation? Never thought about going, would like to know why I should want to. Thank you for the good words. Glad you see it as you do.
@josphineogugua2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jason, Thank you for your comment. I would recommend Nigeria for a vacation, but before heading out, it’s always better to have a native who would pick you up at airport, and show you around … it’s always better getting around with a native in Nigeria, it makes the experience more close to home🤗. Do dm me on Instagram (link in the description box) of you ever get really really serious about going😆🤗. Maybe I can help

Love the accent even when it is sometimes difficult to hear if you are saying: walking or working or when you pronounce extravagant. I can work it out from the context.

Hi there, really enjoyed you video. Can't say that I fully agree with your tenth point though......Dutch people do care about brands and such but in a different way. Those who are successful do try to live in certain neighbourhoods, larger homes, certain brand cars. You are right that they don't show off as much but then again, you don't have. One is noticed. So it is less about showing off (they do brag a bit amongst themselves at a party) and more about getting to that comfort level with your family and staying there.

I think that most of the points you made are coming from our past. You have to understand that our history starts with a religion war against the Spain about the richness of the Roman Catholic church. After that war we were the only country in Europe without a feodal system, that's explains the directness of the Dutch people and the Calvinistic way of living (act normal that's strange enough)

Haha (the last line 😆)... Thanks for sharing this, it's great to see that values created years ago still play a role in the Dutch society today 🤗
@trrt27192 жыл бұрын
I don’t think that has much to do with it because, apart for the directness, all of these things apply to Belgium as well

Hello Josphine, thank you for your video. It is always nice to see my country through someone else's eyes, if only as a reality check. I am very pleased to hear that, in your eyes at least, as a country we are doing ok. Of course, whatever someone says about someone else, says a lot about themselves as well. This video tells me you are an outgoing, sociable person with a very positive view on their surroundings. So yes, you are more likely to get positive experiences. Of the many interesting takes that you touch here, one thing I would like to comment on. You say that Dutch society is very family-friendly. I totally agree, raising my kids here is awesome. So, a family-based country. But I also get to hear time and time again that Dutch society is highly individualistic (me, me, me, I want, I think, I feel...) as opposed to societies where one is a member of the group first, and an individual second. I hear this about many African and Asian societies. I wonder if your view on Netherlands being a family country might partly come from your Nigerian background that you took with you, sort of as a contribution to your environment? (I don't know, I'm just thinking out loud) Anyways, I've found another rabbit hole to dive into, and will spend the near future binging your videos lol. Keep up the good work.

Honestly one sentence sums up the tenth reason: "Doe gewoon lekker je ding, zolang je gezond en gelukkig bent" a lot of dutch parents say this stuff to their kids when it comes to education etc. As long as you have a roof above your head and are happy and healthy. "Just do you" It can be kinda boring for some people like they live in the same town all their lives, only have weekends and certain holidays off and never think of what can i do for the world or is there more to the world than going to the same vacationspot every year at the same hotel etc
