Sacramento State used to be one of the bottom feeders of the Big Sky Conference and at one point, it looked like they might actually cut the football program to save money. Now, they are looking to jump to the FBS level and have major backing through the SAC-12. With brand new head coach Brennan Marion, it looks like Sacramento State could become the next powerhouse at the FCS level and become the next team to jump to the FBS through the Mountain West or Pac-12. This is the story of Sacramento State.

The population of the Western US has grown significantly in recent decades, but nearly all programs to jump to FBS since Boise State and Idaho (which has now returned to FCS) have been in the South.

Sac 12 had the big splashy press conference last fall, but haven't they already been surpassed by local rival UC Davis? UC Davis has joined the MW (albeit not yet for football) and would almost certainly be welcomed if they decide to go FBS.

I don't think anyone should jump to the FBS anymore. We already have too many teams in the FBS level and we are already diluting the FCS level too much, while not to mention that Division 2 schools with aren't too keen on moving up to the D1 Level.

I support any team that has double wing in their game plan.

I bet as NIL makes more football programs less competable against schools with better draw and money, youll see small schools get rid of their non competitive football programs

Yes, but kind of a fluke due to terrible injury luck/bad coaching that has since been replaced.

I live in Sac. NO one cares about this team. Seriously. There games are empty and the city has zero connection to them. In 30 years I’ve never had a single solitary person engage me in a a Sac State football conversation. This one is a serious reach my friend

I think the next team(s) to join the FBS will be North Dakota State and/or Montana State. I also really want you to cover the University at Albany!!

@ fair. I just figured since they are arguably the most dominant FCS team, who has beaten decently respectable FBS teams, could make a big impact

North Dakota State could go to the MAC and be instantly dominant or start off as an above average team in the Mountain West. If they went Big 12 then they’d start off as a mid-tier team so they have some versatility to work with. Considering Northern Illinois is leaving for the Mountain West, I could see the MAC being a great fit for the Bison. Could they move to the Big 12 down the road? Sure they could but start small and work your way up.

Jackson state attendance alone should put them in the fbs. Montana and montana st. Are a no brainer but they want to stay in fcs
