Some info for you: The Geddington Volunteer Fire Briagde is NOT an actual fire brigade. They used to be. In 1977 the fire service across the UK went on strike during the ‘Winter of Discontent’. The men of Geddington formed a fire brigade in order to protect their village but were never called into action. Once the strike ended the brigade disbanded with a ‘standing down’ dinner. At a small anniversary dinner the next year it was decided that having a group of men in the village that were willing to respond to any village need was a good idea after all. The group reformed with the name Geddington Volunteer Fire Brigade, with members being known as Volunteer Firemen, as a tribute to their original founding purpose and they purchased a former RAF airfield fire engine, which they still have to this day. As fire services are a government service in the UK, they are not a recognised fire service and do not respond to fires. They are simply a men’s club that help the community in any way they can.

James Acaster is the best “young” comedian to come out big in the last 5/6 years. He’s really burst bright and anytime he’s on an TV show/panel show you know he’ll be the best on there. His specials on Netflix were great and I think he’s not far from taking the US by storm as well. He’s the comedian that the next generation should want to follow and emulate.

The firefighter game James describes is a real game. I don't think its called "squirt", that's James making up a name. But I've watched the local town fire departments compete against each other playing that game at a summer fair. It was an empty metal beer barrel dangling from a cable between two poles they were pushing. It's a real thing fire departments do to see who's better at controlling the hose and aiming the stream.

Haha, I've been to the Geddington Squirt several times - I had friends who lived in the village and it's not far from me. There are even clips of it on KZbin and the Geddington Fire Brigade has its own website which describes some of the community work the guys do around the village. The Squirt is held every Boxing Day between the volunteer brigade and a team from the county's professional fire service; the latter is often a team of cadets. The spectators stand on the bridge over the river which is indeed close enough for the water to spray all over everyone. It's not a large village and there's not a lot of space for people to stand anywhere else so going to the Squirt means you have a good chance of getting wet. Fortunately the village pubs aren't far and have roaring fires at that time of year...

There is a fair few outdoor pools or lidos in the UK, including Brixton believe it or not, probably about 4 or 5 dotted around London. Also Newbury, Oxford, Reading- there is probably about 130 odd in the UK according to wickipedia, many are the originals built in the 1930s, rescued and brought back to life and are fascinating examples of Art Deco architecture. I only know this as I worked on the restoration of Reading Lido, so got quite interested in the history etc

Don't forget that Acaster is from Kettering Town, in Northampton. I had the misfortune to work in a firm in Kettering, there were 200 people working there and 3 people that I had spoke to had never left the Town, for any reason. One was a 30 yr old married man with a car. Close by were Santa Pod Raceway, where I ran my Honda 750 Turbo, Rockingham Motor Speedway, Northampton International Raceway, Nene Valley Raceway. There are also 2 Football teams close by, if motor racing isn't your thing! There is an aerodrome less than 8 miles away, where I saw a Vulcan Bomber, XH558. So, as boring as I think Kettering is, there are plenty of things to do in the vicinity but they are very funny people!

Do yourselves a favour, and watch a show called 'Alan Davies, As Yet Untitled', where James not only talks about Basingstoke, but also about an early stand-up gig he did, and a time he was in Paris. In fact, watch the entire episode, because the entire panel has epic stories to tell.

This shows that you have never been on the piss in the UK Bush sleeping is a normal past time here 😀 Me and my partner used to live in the country and he would bike to the nearest town for a drink and bike back, one night while biking home very drunk he had a crash with a badger he landed in a thorn Bush and the badger was really pissed off with him he couldn't get his feet out of the bike cleats so crawled further into the thorn Bush for safety from the badger dragging the bike on his feet behind him and eventually fell asleep he woke up about 5am and biked the rest of the way home, I found him the next morning covered in blood and mud asleep on the kitchen table. Country life 🤣

It sounds so stupid it has to be real. In my early twenties (decades ago), I walked home drunk and decided to have a wee by going up a slope of a bridge to a railway line. I kind of lost my way back, tripped and fell asleep. When I woke up in the morning, I was three feet away, caught up in brambles, from a twenty-foot drop to the road and path below me. I was still tipsy when I woke up, got home and got hassle for being out all night drinking. So, to me, your story sounds real!

ive been in a situation where i had enough for the train home and had just missed the last bus home, time suddenly draws out, paint drying takes less time as you get cold, and the colder that it gets the slower time passes ..... at one time or another, most uk people have ended up saying sod it and either slept in a bush or the like... Indoor Pool as outdoor pools are mainly reserved for certain holiday locations and mostly are closed after september ..... remember that the temp will be around 30f to 40f maybe 50f if lucky ..... Noddy Holder also did an advert for nobby's nuts ..... the tagline "No theyre NOBBY's nuts not Noddy's" the advert showing people trying to get his nuts ....

Kinda sad that Slade only seem to be known for their Christmas song. They had some great songs in UK that a few big US bands made covers of (Kiss covered "run Run Away, Quiet Riot covered "Cum On Feel The Noise").

Yeah volunteer firefighters is a much bigger thing in the US, presumably because of the relative isolation of communities in the US primarily (wanting everything for as little money as possible, especially tax money, may also play into it) Volunteers are always helpful in all walks, I used to volunteer with the NHS but I’d rather my firefighters were all fully funded and paid

The Geddington Volunteer Fire Briagde is NOT an actual fire brigade. They are simply a men’s club that help the community in any way they can.

he's roasting him as a reserve fire fighter, like professional soldiers will roast reserve soldiers as part timers - basically not the real deal. But i know some reserve firefighters here in the UK who do attend fires - but they are generally the backup if they are needed and then the full time fire crews will dig at them for turning up when the most of the work is done!

Most volunteer firefighters in EU (and UK) don't really have much training or schooling so they are only allowed to do supportive roles for the professional teams (eg drive, prepare lining / hoses, cleaning.. ) so they can do their job quicker and more effeciently.

Oh, that sucks. In America, we have have firehouses made up almost entirely of volunteer firefighters, save for the fire chief. Also, I don't know if the UK or other parts of the world (the West in particular) do this, but most firehouses require one to at least have EMT training, if not training as a paramedic. Personally, never understood the whole volunteer firefighter thing. I don't know how anyone can work a full-time job, have family/personal life, and then do all this hard work... for no compensation. And in the U.S., 70% of firefighters are volunteer. Sounds like they just don't wanna pay people, or offer benefits. EMTs and Paramedics sure aren't volunteer. Police aren't volunteer, even though they tend to do cause more damage than they prevent.

@@CymruEmergencyResponder so a big difference between ours. It's crazy, I think in the U.S., the firefighters, EMTs, and Paramedics are - in my eyes - bigger heros than most cops these days. Yet, 70% of our firefighters don't get paid for putting risking their lives.

@@FLQueerLiberal1982 Fire services are a regional government service in the UK. Rather than having small independent fire departments in each town we have fire stations in each town that are part of a large Fire Service that covers the whole county/counties. Ever station in each fire service uses the same equipment which is paid for by taxes. There is no fundraising to buy equipment that is second hand. The firefighters, even those who respond to calls when their pager goes off (like your volunteers) are paid.
