Turboprops really under rated. Modern Turbo Props are quiet, fast, effiecient, and have great takeoff and landing performance.

Very cool and interesting. As someone who’s flown the EMBRAER 120,135/140/145, and training for the 170/175 fleet now; that design looks like the fuselage of a 170-195, with the wings of the 135-145, and with the props…reminiscences the 120. It would be really cool to see the airplane make production.

Interesting! The 50-seat version of this would be the perfect replacement for the uncomfortable (and somewhat expensive to operate) CRJ-200, and the dodgy ATR42. As concerns the larger versions of this plane, if it has current-generation PW100 series turboprops, the fuel consumption will be the same as the E2 series; but if the turboprops on these concept aircraft are considerably more efficient than a PW100 series powerplant, these aircraft would make sense. It will be interesting to see what next-generation turboprops will be used here. And, it's definitely a good idea for the turboprops to be placed at the rear; it's the only way turboprops can survive.

On the other hand, i hope they will make an executive express of this TPNG, perhaps with the turboprop engines mounted in pusher configuration just like the Piaggio P.180 Avanti. The turboprop is sure in need for a refreshment. Either one of the commercial, business or defense verticals could use a redesigned platform with improved economics. As to the design itself many questions are still to be answered, specially the ones regarding safety - e.g. contingency in case of a broken blade. This and the other new gen props proposed by embraer have a rear mounted power plant because of future fuel sources. In one interview i saw (maybe even here on SF) the engineers said the best place for a hydrogen-filled spherical tank would be at the rear, thus making sense to place the engines close to it.

Given state of technology and expected rate of progress. They would be wise to develop a hybrid turbo prop. Battery boosted for take off with ultra low cruising fuel burn rate. Even better if it’s hydrogen fuel capable. Such a system would be upgraded more easily as better and better batteries come along and hydrogen infrastructure comes along.

Be interesting to see where they find the speed/fuel burn sweet spot, the Dash-8 trades fuel consumption for high cruise, and offers a true APU vs the ATR72's slightly slower cruise and lack of an APU in favor of a hotel model engine brake. I think on the short segment it's going to be the feature breakdown that might make a bigger difference than raw fuel efficiency, particularly if you're only 5% overtop an ATR72. I mean when the ATR's fatigue out then absolutely there's going to be a market. Be interesting to see what falls out on the turboprop front, current SOTA from P&W is the PW127XT which at ~2750SHP is probably dead in their sights, and alleges a 3% fuel burn reduction.

Ever increasing traffic makes major hubs are increasingly more difficult to get to. When there's a choice people prefer to go to suburban airports like MacArthur, Westchester, & Newburgh in the NYC metro area. Yes, Newburgh is way out there, but if you live in a northern suburb it could easily take less time to reach. Since Covid there seems to be a market for planes that can do 'thin' routes profitably turboprops might make a comeback.

Very little, the tractor arrangement of the propeller would mean if the hub fails, the propeller would run into the wing or possibly into the cabin though. If it was a pusher design, the propeller would only detach under deceleration, and be less noisy for the passengers too. Hope the program misses the things that doomed the Beechcraft Starship though. Engines at the rear make for smoothness and quietness plus less risk of FOD on unimproved runways. But it seems to me that suffers from all the problems that the old trijets had - a lower mach limit (maybe not a big issue in a turboprop), probably need a T-tail to avoid deep stalls (hence higher drag), harder maintenance access (a big issue for a short haul plane that does LOTS of takeoffs and landings). Plus I think with the props there it may be very hard to design the plane to survive one of them disintegrating, which certification will surely require.

Why T tail would Couse higher drag it the too of the T acts as a wing fence for the vertical surface? That's why sail planes use this configuration. T tails are heavier though due the weight and forces of the horizontal surface
@DosAussieThai
@DosAussieThai 2 жыл бұрын
Both ATR and Dash 8 are using T-Tail so this will not be a disadvantageous difference. Mounting the engines on the tail, though, will add a lot of weight proportion to a much smaller aircraft than the trijets.
