Your tutorials are THE best. I'm learning how to sew, and every time I get stuck or confused I go poking through your vid archives. Thanks!

This is great! Thanks so much. I learn so much better by seeing these stitches done; it really help to translate what is shown in the books. Gracias! (P.S. Why would anyone "dislike" this??)

Dear Wendi, thank you for taking the time to film this tutorial and share it with us. I am trying embrodiery for the first time (actually the second) in 66 years. The first time was at least 59 years ago. With your help it will be like getting on the bike again and having the fun like you do. Love from Sherie

I’m trying to teach myself embroidery after years of only doing cross stitch! I always wondered how a satin stitch worked! I didn’t realize it would be so simple! Thank you for taking the time to make this video!

I'm working on adding links to other videos within each video when I mention them, but it's a slow process. In the meantime, if you go to my channel and click on embroidery videos you can get quick access to all of them.

thank you so much. I learned to do embroidery when I was a young girl. It was a summertime project when our of grade school. My Nana taught me how she learned from the Nuns who taught her to embroider Altar Linens!. Well many years have passed and I've decided I needed to do something with my fingers ( arthritis) to keep them nimble. I've been knitting and for a little diversion thought I'd try to go back to embroidery. I couldn't remember how to do the satin stitch. The instructions do not show the split stitch first. After doing a little section I realized I didn't like the way it looked and sure enough my memory served me well. Thank you! Also I think I used at least three strands and the instructions call for two. Looks to skimpy with two, so three it is!

@FantageRoselinda I'll do a video showing what to do if your thread comes up short - but it will probably be a couple of weeks before I can get to it. And sorry - satin stitch is just kind of slow. There's no way to speed it up except to stitch faster. :-)

Wonderful! Love the split stitch tip-I have been struggling with the satin stitch on some clothing and it works beautifully. Well done and Thanks!

Yes, I found your video on it and it is easy, but on my counted cross stitch project, I think the backstitch is more appropriate. Thank you, your videos are great! :)

I wish I had looked this up before I did my last project, I ended up scrapping my idea and doing a split stitch to outline the name and just left it at that. I will be using this to do names on stockings this year. :) Thanks for the fantastic idea!!
@WendiGratz12 жыл бұрын
I've never tried that before - I always use backstitch or split stitch - but I think stem stitch should work just fine.

Thanks! But it's just a simple little heart I drew. The puffiness of the satin stitch is what makes it look so good. :-)
@TuxedoRonny11 жыл бұрын
Excellent tutorial, thank you! Though, what would you recommend for filling in a larger area? like if I had a heart shape 2-3 times that size?

I love your videos, I find them so helpful! One question... How many strands did you use for this satin stitch?
@djbatten5229 жыл бұрын
What is the thread you were using? is that 6 strands of embroidery floss or something else?
@WendiGratz11 жыл бұрын
You should choose the number of strands based on the thickness of the line you want. In my videos I often use a full six strands because I want a thick line that's easy for you all to see. In my regular stitching I seem to always default to 4 strands. I've never noticed any additional twisting by using additional strands - but I let my thread dangle to untwist the threads fairly frequently.

I would have liked to see you finish the whole heart. It wouldn't have taken much longer, and would have felt rewarding to see it be a finished project. Also, I don't know what a split stitch is. When you refer to stitches, could you add links or short demonstrations please? I would like to hear you talk about the base fabric, how you made the shape of the heart from the beginning and seen you do that outline too. Perhaps in a few segments? I enjoy your videos. Thank you for sharing

Hello, I love your videos! They are perfect for beginners like me! I do have a question, however, what if you have a much larger area you'd like to fill in? Are there easier stitches to fill large areas?
@WendiGratz12 жыл бұрын
@elcarlosbaby1 Sorry - I don't know of a place that does that. Maybe try asking at your local fabric store?
@WendiGratz11 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you might be stretching your fabric too much. If you're sewing a non-stretchy fabric, make it taught in the hoop but don't overstretch it. It should have a tiny bit of give in it. If you're sewing stretchy fabric (like a T-shirt) you MUST use a stabilizer. Good luck!

Please excuse my ignorance; I'm new to this.Your floss seems thick. What kind of floss are you using? I was told not to use more than 3 strands of floss because using the full floss would result in twisted threads.

What fabric are you using? Great tutorial. Thank you.

Just some unbleached muslin.
@WendiGratz11 жыл бұрын
You could use long & short stitch - that would be the closest in texture to satin stitch, though not as smooth. Split stitch also makes an excellent fill stitch. And I LOVE filling with French knots. I have videos for all of these - just go to my channel and look at the embroidery video list.

I would try etsy, there are plenty of embroidery artists who would be glad to do some custom work. There used to be an alchemy page where you could request something like that, but now I think you just have to contact sellers directly.

Just split down the middle no matter how many threads you have. I never use just a single strand for this stitch - it's too hard to split.

@123likechicken You'll have to take out your last couple of stitches until you have enough thread to be able to tie off. You can see a video at wendigratz.blogspot.com/2011/08/how-to-tie-off-thread-on-back-of-your(dot)html that shows you how to do that.
