I put the grease in the lug with a toothpick. Way less messy. And the wax also gives the head a little lubrication, which keeps the shell round a little longer. So it does double duty. The only issue with the wax is it can deaden the head for a week or so if there is too much wax on the bearing edge. Great video man

Instead of throwing out the heads, could you lend them to our school? lol
@T1tanz

That could lead to damaging your tenors. Also depending on how you tune especially high schools. You may pull the head.

Rogue how would it damage the tenors? Those heads look the same size as ours. We also tune almost to the same pitch as theirs.

Use "off" (yes the bug spray) and spray the logo on the spock. Let it sit for 5ish minutes then with a paper towel scrub the logo off. You need to put a good amount of pressure to get it off but it'll make it so you don't smear your heads. That's what my techs have me do at Stryke.

@@SwimminWitDaFishies That would be super heavy and bad for your back, and quads only have 4, 5, or 6 drums (depends on how many spocks, or the tiny drums you have). It would be pretty impractical, and it would change your center of mass which would make marching awkward. Also, all of those head changes would be such a pain lol

Wow marched Jr. Corps from 1975 to 1980 this video could have saved our quad line from 250 pushups each person over the years for putting on new heads at rehearsal & breaking them weekly cranking em up never ever used wax or was instructed to use wax. Wow
@michaelwilliams2364
@michaelwilliams2364 4 жыл бұрын
Don't feel bad. Using wax on bearing edges is nothing new, but it's still not widely used or even widely known... and actually this is the first tuning instruction I've seen that gives away the magic trick. Hard wax does a fantastic job of allowing the head to slip over the edge more easily while cranking on it, but on the other hand It also tends to take away "some" of the brightness of the drum (how much completely depends on the brand of drums, condition, heads, and how the wax is applied). If I had to guess, using wax on late 70's drums would have certainly preserved the heads, but they may have ended up sounding like tuned cardboard boxes. On a more personal note, Thank you for keeping the activity going for us later generations to enjoy!

WARNING: Method not recommended for tuning contras. (I marched in DCI in 1984 and our eight contras were adopted drum techs. My low frequency colleagues and I helped the battery with head changes (up to finger tight) and helped our five non-singing, tone deaf bass drummers get their heads up pitch. (No, like most people they could not hear that low accurately, but as tuba players we could.) This allowed the staff to do all the final tuning. We also were the harness hardware bitches. Lots of deez nuts to tighten up, boi. I think the snares considered the contra players to be indentured servants or something. It was a fun way to sit in the shade while the hornline sweated out basic block marching or brass sectionals. (The battery *always* found the best - or only - shade. Imagine 25 players all crammed into the tiny shade patch of one, scraggly tree in a field in Nebraska.) By the way, we were a Top Twelve corps back then, but with a very low budget, so I remember head changing days happening about as often as Laundry Day, which was around every two weeks, two tours of a total of 32,000 miles and 36 shows. (We also walked to school. In the snow. Uphill. Both ways.) Yes, in the early 1980s we all had stanky clothes and our drum heads sounded like a tonal flabalanche, but technologically speaking our line was using the then-popular Slingerland TDR snares (with the slapshot strainer! woohoo!) and a 36" Bass 5. Ancient history.) "America's Quad Line" - You guys need your own distinctive red and gold teeshirts with that on it. That name is pure sexy. Subbing your new page, guys.
