My first attempt at ordering a pad, I waited 6 months before I posted a negative comment on their community page. They blocked me, wrote me a nasty email, called me from a blocked number and left a threatening voicemail mail, and then cancelled my order. My second attempt about a year after the first, took about 9 months. But I did eventually receive my pads. They’re the worst. I’m glad they failed.

I asked for a SoundBrenner (the pulsating metronome watch) as I thought it would be a really effective tool to use in both practice and for various performances where beat mapping samples and etc could come in really handy. I practiced with it for about 30 minutes and then sold it to a guitarist who probably thought it was a super smart idea, just like me

Turtle pads are something I'm going to be checking out before recommending it to my students. It's a draw string bag with a practice pad sewn into the back. It looks like a convenient rehearsal bag, and the company is run by a Cavaliers alum. Also proceeds go towards helping real turtles!

I’m actually friends with the owner of Turtle Pads! I personally love mine, although I do have the actual pad, and the string bags are really convenient! The more the beard grows, the more Eric becomes Epic. Also, owner of the vibrating metronome here. I'm not a drummer so opinion may vary but their reviews are valid. You lost the feeling when you play. And it took a while to get used to feel the vibrations. They are useful but the regular metronome is very reliable and better option. Luckily, I got the smartwatch version of the product that has other bunches of features so it is not completely useless.
@caenes74562 жыл бұрын
yea i bought one as a drummer, tried using it like 3 times, never touched it again, lose the feeling of it, moves around if not tight enough, id rather play without a metronome than with it (granted i do kinda play without a metronome, but im also playing songs with a clear 2 and 4 snare hit so i count through that)

Felts are also extremely useful for pit percussion. We lose felts all the time in mine, especially big felts, which we have to use for vibraphones' splashes or we end up hitting the suspended cymbals too. It's a great idea to have a big mason jar of spare felts and things to clamp cymbals down for the pit.

I’ve never owned nor ordered a Xymox pad. I think I remember them selling pads at DCI shows in the late 90’s. It’s puzzling that a company can survive such inefficiency for so many years. Are their pads still considered higher quality than other pads? How has a competitor not yet capitalized on the Xymox under-performance?
@hunterrussell92632 жыл бұрын
I don’t understand it either tbh. I know they have some strong patents on their designs but I feel like other companies could find ways to get around them. That being said, even if someone copied them I highly doubt Xymox wants to go anywhere near a courtroom.

The vibrating metronome can do wonders for timing, but it's VERY unforgiving and not for everyone. You actually feel when your not on the beat and I have used it moving it around in between the limbs. Like having it on the kick foot for FoF pop songs, HH foot for jazz, or right/left hand lead or 2 and 4 snare hits. Another thing I have used it for is classical percussion, marimba and vibraphone, where timing is of the essens but you still need, and should, focus more on your sound. I like it more for that reason actually. It's still a bad idea for a gift since the person needs to have A LOT of patience and will hate you fore making you aware of their inconsistency. Even if they are used to play with metronome and have good timing.

So about the vibration thing. Its better geared for non percussive instruments, and ones that aren't very full body. So most woodwinds and some brass, maybe strings. It works well for me cause I get in the mood to practice late at night, so I'll set my phone to vibrate a beat and place on my thigh so i can whisper tongue. Wrist seems like a bad placement though. But yeah, definitely not for a drummer, unless they only play like, idk silent cowbell or synthesizer.

Hey Eric, I'm preparing to start marching band in a couple of years and was wondering if I should do tenors or snare (If they give me an option) What would be you're preference? I like the movements of Tenors and the sound, but am a little crappy at playing without looking. Snare might be a better option for me because I'm not the strongest drummer, so it would be better for weight purposes. Also I've been wanting to do Tenors since the 1st grade, but find both appealing now. Keep in mind I have only played on Snare (Also done keyboard and other instruments unlike drums) in my symphonic school band.

(Sorry that this comment is extremely long, but I want to give you as specific advice as possible) I've learned a lot over my 7-8 years as a concert percussionist and my 4 years in marching band, and I just want to share what I've learned over those years. In my personal opinion, I think you should go for tenors instead of snare even though you'll likely not make either your first year. But just because you don't make it, doesn't mean it's a bad thing. Not making it your first time isn't the end of the world. Use it as a lesson. I thought that I'd make it freshman year like many before me, but I realized that I was nowhere near the drumming level of the upperclassmen, so I used my first year in pit and the off-season to practice more and learn more from the juniors/seniors, and I eventually made it straight to quads sophomore year and drum captain my senior season. Those hours of practice really made things a lot easier once I became an upperclassman myself. Snares are extremely difficult to play clean (and they're pretty overrated too but I'm biased towards tenors since they're way cooler with all of the crossovers and sweeps that you'll get to do) since they're designed to bring out EVERY note you play, no matter the dynamic. It's gonna take years of rehearsal to get a snare line clean and consistent, so be prepared for that. To be a snare (and in the battery in general,) your timing must be extremely consistent and your subdivisions must be clear. Counting is everything in percussion. If your not in time, it will throw the whole band off. In addition, if your drumline uses traditional grip like mine, that's one more thing you have to perfect in addition to everything else I'm talking about. Traditional grip requires a whole other group of muscles, wrist motion, and playing technique than your regular matched grip. Tenors are indeed quite heavy and you never really get used to the back pain, so I'd just own it up since there's nothing more you can really do. Hours and hours of rehearsal will build up your endurance , so eventually it'll be a bit easier on your back, but not by much. I wouldn't worry about not looking at the tenors while playing because (I'm quote-summarizing the movie Drumline here,) the drums won't move anywhere other than where you are so there's no need to continuously look at them. Wherever they are when you put them on, that's where they'll always be. If you look at them all the time, you won't be in time. You use matched grip for tenors, mainly because it's basically impossible to to tenor things with traditional grip, unless you're Eric of course. You have a couple of years before you get there, so I'd suggest that you start really building your chops (work on diddles and different rudiments at different speeds by drumming on pillows and in front of mirrors so you can see your technique, trust me it'll really help in the long run), build your strength by staying in good physical shape, and work on taking your eyes off the drum or sheet music and instead on the conductor and focus on time, regardless of what instrument you end up on. Playing right in time and at the right dynamic/stick height is vital to both instruments, so I'd get familiar with that too. I just wanted to say that I'm really happy that you're so dedicated to music and you already developed such a strong passion for percussion. Keep going! My HS marching days are over unfortunately but you have the opportunity to be a part of something really special. Hopefully this gives a good sense of what you can expect in marching band, and remember to always enjoy it because you won't get another experience like it ever again. ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING, so stay positive no matter what and show your band director/percussion instructors that you're willing to put in the extra work to be successful, because they will make note of it and it shows your true character. There's gonna be a lot of hard days, but I have no doubt that you'll get through it because we percussionists are total badasses and no other instrument can tell us otherwise. Good luck wherever you end up!

A quality stick bag with compartments for drum keys, accessory items like ching rings and cymbal bacon, pencils, earplugs etc. Also DW makes a key that has a knurled top and plugs into a keychain. I have two of them on a lanyard attached to the stick bag. 2 drum keys makes tuning faster, easier, and more accurate. Attached to the lanyard means never lost or left behind.

I've used quite a few different sticks, but my favorite that I found most comfortable for my hands were the Corps Master MS1. Liked them so much I order 50 bricks of them, just in case they stopped making them 🤣

Ordered a xymox pad for my brother the beginning of his sophomore year, he is now a senior and we’re still waiting on it. Every time we email they say it’ll be about a month… 2 and a half years ago… 😅

I ordered my xymox pad November 11th 2021 and got it December 7th 2021. It wasn't even a month. It was a tenor kick. I read the reviews and I knew the risk but I got lucky.

Really great video. Great chops and I loved the transitions. Nice ideas for drummers. For me the worst gift is a toy drum/electronic drum/plastic desk drum set/BS stupid/unplayable crap. I hate those gifts the most. I have a Xymox that I bought at GC years ago and I like it but the rubber pad on top deteriorated and I now have a piece of wood with glue residue that sounds like playing a table. I like Soundbrenner's watch and I just think it's fun to wear. I think it is an amazing piece of engineering and I love that you can get one for each member of your band and synch them all. I don't really care how practical it is I just think it's a cool idea and I do really like and use mine but I can understand people not wanting it. I like the fact I can put it on my base drum foot. You should check it out and see if you like it. Cheers.

Regarding the vibrating metronome, I am not a percussionist (I play mostly stringed instruments and piano) so I actually enjoy this product. To me it helps me to actually have some physical stimulus to help me keep time

I would say the additional downside to the "vibrating metronome" is that there are certain situations (bands, etc) where they are looking for a drummer who can "play to a click" so using a click-based metronome helps to that end where vibrating...? Certainly helps your time but...

Okay I ordered one of the hybrid snare pads from Xymox and a pair of sticks. I ordered it back in 2017-18 I believe (can't remember since it's been that long ago,) but I have been waiting for it since then. It's 2021. I've been waiting for 3-4 years. Upset moments.

I hit 3 years of waiting on my Xymox pad in June, so it's been 2 1/2 years so far. Definitely never getting it at this point, but luckily I already have one that's been handed down to me 7 years ago. 💁♀️

I have to tape vic firth sticks a lot for marching band and usually i’ll tape it to near the flag since that’s the usual balance point for the fulcrum or even sometimes have it stop at the balance point on some sticks for my reference but i always wanna make sure it protects against stick shots, rim shots, and all that jazz

I bought a Xymox first gen tenor pad off of FB marketplace back in 2019. It was well loved and still is. But the laminates were starting to fall off and while it's still playable it sounds flat. I bought a Offworld Miniship and love it. But will probably end up buying a full size Ahead Chavez Tenor pad.
