In my opinion the system blues sound duller and more dead than the other two; could be because they're new but I just think the way they went with hardware cut back on resonance if that makes sense. Yamaha is the lightest and the most resonant, but you can also hear a bit of "stick thud", which with the resonance kind of interferes with the sound close up, but not noticeable from the audience. Pearl, being the heaviest and almost as resonant as the Yamahas, makes a pretty good impression with the hardware. There's less "stick thud" up close with the Pearls in comparison to the Yamahas, but cuts back a tiny bit on the brightness and resonance of sound at audience distance. Overall, I would go with Yamaha, mainly because of the weight, resonance and brightness, and integrity of sound no matter the distance. What do y'all think?

I'm not a percussionist, but I agree with a lot of what you said. The Pearls sound great, the System Blues sounded a bit "muffled" to me, and the Yamahas sounded a bit "thin" or "tinny" to me at times. I would definitely go with Yamaha over the Pearl for that huge weight difference alone, though, especially with HS groups.

From marching Dynasty drums I can tell you a few things: A) They are closer to 50 pounds B) they sound heavier and have a much more deep tone C) they are super uncomfortable Personally, out if the three, I would go with System Blue, I liked the Tang of the high drums even though the low drums had less of an 'impact'.

Fascinating to see how System Blue's "weight reducing technology" is heavier than Yamaha that makes no such claim and frankly sounds worse than the other two. My personal favorite soundwise is Pearl, they have the most resonance and beef from what my ears could tell. Outstanding content as always.

The first iteration of system blue quads weighed 23 lbs. then they made the shells deeper and thicker. Some ideas are only great on paper. Curious to know what wood is used in the older Yamaha quads. Birch or maple? About 10 years ago, the standard SFZ snare was birch. You had to custom order the now standard maple shell that the drum corps were using.
@milojohnson3057
@milojohnson3057 5 жыл бұрын
@@Ridebmx34521 the yamahas used here (mq-8200 field corps) have birch shells. the current model (mq-8300 field corps) uses maple shells. maple is less dense than birch but the maple shells are deeper. also, the current model has the randall may free floating lug bridge which reduces weight. overall i think the two sets probably weigh about the same.

The System Blue is all attack with little resonance. The Yamaha's are warm and resonant with a muddy attack. The Pearl's are in the sweet middle spot with a good balance of both attack and resonance. The Yamaha and Pearls were super close in terms of tone production, although I think the Yamaha may actually have beaten them all out in terms of low end clarity. During the roll passages things seem more full on the Yamaha with pearl being quite similar, while system blue has more of a pop factor too it. That pop is just a touch too articulate for my taste, but it may be what someone else is lookin for?

In high school, our drum line had Stingrays. They were a cheap, fiberglass set. The only time the basses sounded good was when we put on some fresh Evans heads and they finally sounded good... but that didn't last long and our band couldn't afford to keep replacing heads with anything other than Remo Ambassadors. The snares couldn't be cranked down far enough to get that real tight sound. The tenors were ok, but were just quads while most other lines in our county had quints. Oh, and of course, the band got a real nice set of Pearls the year after I graduated.

With what was presented, I think Yamaha sounded the best but probably only because they have slightly new pinstripes which gives it some warmth. Weight of the instruments had me surprised at first but then I remembered each of the sets are different ages so they might be inaccurate. I think this is a good demo at least that helps people know general differences between the companies

Out of all the drums I’ve played on Pearl and Mapex are my favorite for sound quality since they have the slightly deeper shells. I’m not a fan of system blues at all, and seeing how much they weigh compared to the Yamaha shallow cut shells, I don’t understand why you’d even buy them. Their tenors sound so dampened, and their snares sound just, bad. Pearl still makes the best sounding drums but I’m not a fan of the airframes, I really like the old randy may carriers with the J Bars, and I’ve only used the new ones once and it wasn’t adjusted to my body so I don’t have a fair opinion on them. But I think Yamaha takes the cake for all around goodness, with good sound, light weight, and good hardware!

They are actually heavier than Dynasty’s tenors, I weighed these System Blue drums at 38 pounds. I still really like the the system blue drums look and sound with certain heads. But Dynasty probably has the best tenor sound out there in my opinion. Dynasty tenors are lighter than System blue tenors.

They sound the same to me but I would choose the Yamaha lighter ones especially for junior high and high school marching bands to save on the kids backs and for college kids it doesn't matter unless it's for women and small men that aren't stronger to save on their backs. And for orchestras it wouldn't matter if the drums are going to be stationary. Every additional ounce can be a potential back killer for Marching Band Members unless they they hit the weight room on a regular basis.

Pearls are damn heavy, but hearing this now I think I like their sound the best. Granted the heads were different in this, but this brings back some memories of the Remo Renaissance heads we used on them one season. They sounded beautiful out of the box, and pearls really project well. Only thing that sucked was those heads would get beat to crap in one 12hr rehearsal day so we usually had them changed before a show. I'm curious what the difference would've been between them and the Yamahas in this if the shell size was the same. But based on this quick comparison I at least like both of those way more than the System Blues. The System Blues sounded like they're made entirely out of plastic... 35lbs of plastic.

After years of watching,listening and playing on various drum brands I really think Pearl is the toughest as they stand up to the torture of high school kids. I taught band for 35 years so I've bought quite a few sets of drums over the years as you can well imagine. I do think the newer Yamahas have the best articulation although I will say SCV achieves a great sound from their Dynastys.(as evidenced by their multiple Sanford Awards!) Back in the day when I marched Spirit (snareline 1980) Slingerland and Ludwig were the big two!

I feel like the pearls deffinetly sounded best. With the Yamaha drums, you could hear a ring for a long time after the drum was hit which when playing fast such as in the lick made the notes almost combine into one. The system blue drums had the opposite problem, they had almost no resonance whatsoever. The system blue drums also struggled greatly with projecting their sound, as can be seen with the sound test at a longer rage. I believe that pearl had a good amount of resonance, maybe a little bit short, but much better than the other two, and also was much better at projecting it's sound.

So if you double tap directly after the last note of the lick on each set you can perfectly get the last hit of each and really hear the difference. The pearl and yamaha share a crisp resonance and similar finish although you can tell the Yamaha's arent as deep. The sound blue? Ones muffle the end of their tone because of how they're secured.

I think that was a shallow shell Pearl set vs a deep shell system blue set. If I'm not wrong about that then it's pretty cool that the system blues are lighter

The yamaha has the best responsiveness. There is a much larger dynamic change, especially in the spock drums. The resonance variation could be from the thickness of the shell, but the difference in the heads is huge. Clear heads are always brighter then the coated. It would make sense that the coated may leave a slightly smaller dynamic range. Don't actually know, no way to tell.

As long as you’ve got the Napoleon Dynamite wig, I consider that a totally fair test, LOL! In all honesty, Pearl always had the best sounding tenors to my ear from a warmth and projection perspective, especially vs. Yamaha’s original stuff, which seemed to get lost in the mix a bit, requiring an additional set on the field to keep up with the sharpness of their birch snares and bass drums. Here, I think both Pearl and Yamaha were more resonant and warm than the Natals. I might even give the edge to the Yamahas.

We use the pearl carbon cores and I personally think they sound better than the others. I might just be used to the sound, but that’s what I think.

To my ears, the Pearl set sounded the best however I'd really like to see what the Lugs have to offer as they are my favorite set.

I have a question what do you think about Trixon because I’m looking for tenor drum but I don’t wanna play over 200 dollars

Still say the best tenors ever were the Slingerland cut-a-way drums. Great sound. Wish I could get blueprints for them.

I think pearl has the best sound quality . When playing piano, I could clearly hear it. And when playing forte, it just had a nice sort of ping to it. Though it is heavier, I think better sound takes the cake.

Pearl had the best sound, but I have back pain, it's not extreme but it's a bit more than the average tenor. So if my priority is how I feel, I'll go Yamaha. If it's how it sounds, definitely Pearl.

I just realized maybe one reason why the System Blue drums have such a dead sound. The system blue tenor heads are super resonant. I don’t know if that was intentional, but it made sense considering when I saw BD their drums were super ringy where here they sound like the opposite.
