Never😄! Ojukwu is NOT a coward by any metric. Most Nigerians are not very well read. It is not uncommon to find Nigerians talking about matters they know nothing about. Just pure sentimental nonsense. OJUKWU IS A NIGERIAN HERO. He saw the problem of northern domination and proposed a confederal structure to remedy the problem. The Yorubas are very tribalistic and servile. So they follow their leaders blindly even to their own peril. southern leaders know the truth but are unwilling to speak cuz of their lust for power. The constitution of the country is dangerously demonic. Restructuring and a new constitution are the only things that can save Nigeria. The first “coup” was not a “coup” but a revolution. It was A revolution for the soul of the country. Sadly, it did not stand. Ojukwu like many other powerful Nigerians at the time, saw the problem of northern domination. However, he was the only one who had the guts to do something about it. Sadly, he failed in the attempt. The yorubas were a divided house at the time, and fell under the control of the north. The Yoruba to this day, remains a stooge of the powerful northern houses.

I feel that Gowon spoke then as a young man, but God allowed Gowon to be alive powerless and moving around with his Nigeria Prays, and witnessing the present day Massacre of people of plateau State, meanwhile the Igbos Gowon soldiers killed recovered and are obviously the richest tribe in Nigeria through hard work while Northern Nigeria remains the poorest and most insecure region of Nigeria simply because Gowon didn't implement Aburi Accord and went to war against the Igbos. Ojukwu remains the Greatest Igboman that lived in Modern History. A leader with foresight more than Gowon. Nigeria is now trying to agree to accept Aburi Accord 55years later. Ojukwu ran a government that was self sufficient producing it's military weapons that fought the work from guns, bombs, vehicles, refinery and everything Biafra used were produced locally while Gowon imported all the weapons Nigeria used to fight the war from Europe and America. Most United Nation countries fought against Biafra with mercernaries yet Igbos inflicted heavy casualties to Nigeria for 3years of war. If Ojukwu is not a Hero then that word has no definition. Igbos were being killed all over Nigeria and the elders in Igbo land sanctioned secession; he was the de facto leader and had to be the face of the cause, and he did the best he could - the Igbos only found out that not only were they hated in Nigeria, but just like the Israelites, there are international and supernatural forces against their self determination. Whether that was because of oil or because of a general fear of Igbo ingenuity, the civil war was inevitable and might I remind you, Ojukwu had no part in the coup of January, 1966. He was just a child of destiny! As for him being a coward for running away, would you rather escape a lost cause to fight another day or remain foolhardy and die like a chicken? Let us not be self-righteous. What gave him the authority to declare an independent state? He had no such powers he was only driven by greed. And the name "Biafra" does not have anything to do with Igbos and their common destiny. It was a name given by a European to for geographical reasons. Was there really a killing of the Igbo people in the North? If yes, then Ojukwu's decision is understandable. Why didn't he die? Because if he had died in the war, it would have given the enemy the biggest satisfaction and would have been the biggest shame of his people. That would have crushed the will of his people beyond repairs. He gave himself the chance to explain his actions. Everyone would have been in doubt of his decision if he didn't. Respect the man.

What would have broken or crushed the spirit of his people is if he had been captured and subjected to public disgrace and humiliation not if he had chosen to stay back and fight to the death. That would have earned him the highest of respect from the so-called enemy. All of that giving himself the chance to explain as an excuse to run away goes further to confirm his cowardice. If he had had respect for word power in resolving conflicts he would have been diplomatic in his language and will insist on a diplomatic resolution to the conflict no matter what and wouldn´t have allowed the situation to escalate into an all-out war. There are so many other indications of his character during the war that reveals he was a coward but wouldn´t be necessary to bring them up here at least not for now.

The Govt turned a deaf ear to all entreaties to protect Igbo residents being murdered and lynched in the North particularly Sabon Gari. Same Govt led by Gen Gowon turned a deaf ear and refused to honour the settlement reached during Aburi Accord. You want him to stay and give Gowon the last laugh when every other means of support from food to weapons have all collapsed. Go and read up the 'Act of War'. The most known war commander either commit suicide or go on exile. If you don't want you can form your own history, but just know that 1969 and 2023 has about 54 years in between.

This is typical of how Igbos present their case ever de4sperate to draw sympathy to themselves making others look like brute savages out to get the superior Igbo tribe. The number of Igbos killed was more because of the Igbos' mentality of settling in large numbers on others' territory to exploit them economically. If it could be argued that the Igbos have been enjoying a peaceful settlement in the north for a long time before the unfortunate political incident that led to their being massacred in large numbers then you will be shooting yourself in the leg if you want to make it look like the Igbos were innocent of what led to it. The fact remains that the first military coup was led by a majority of young Igbo military officers who killed top political leaders both in the north and in the west and failed to kill any from their part of the country. Any reasonable person from anywhere in the world would have seen that it was an Igbo coup except for the Igbos. And not only was Ojukwu a coward he was also a bad military commander and here is why. You see all the nonsense you talked about military rules in warfare that dictate a leader should run or commit suicide doesn´t hold any water because they were perceptions of humans not natural. Naturally in any combat, you assess the strength of your enemy against yours, and if it is overwhelming like it was against the Biafran then you will be not only suicidal but also foolish to commit your side to a military confrontation because the outcome is already programmed. What a good commander will do will be to hide behind a fortress which in this case is a diplomatic fortress so long it takes you to consolidate your strength and position. If you are a Christian you must have heard God being referred to as the Rock Of Ages. That´s because being under God offers you sanctuary from the devil because only a fool confronts the devil directly. It takes being in a position of AUTHORITY to be able to confront and defeat the devil otherwise you will be defeated. That´s why it is not really military might that wins wars but rather wisdom, understanding, and knowledge and that was exactly the case with the Nigerian civil war. What really brought the Igbos to their knees was the Blockade idea, not the superior military might of the Nigerian Army. People start dying of hunger and malnutrition mostly children which is another aspect of the war that reveals Ojukwu for who he really was a coward and a bad military commander. Now tell me how many of Ojukwu's immediate family members die of kwashiorkor, malnutrition, and others? How many of the top Biafran top military commanders of the war and their immediate family dies of the effect of the blockade? I´m sure they all had more than enough to eat and drink while the people they were leading were starving to death. Shouldn´t he as a commander have taken the possibility of that happening into account and taken the path of diplomacy instead? And while that was going on shouldn´t he have thrown in the towel to save his people before it got to the deadly stage he allowed it to spiral into? That was a cowardly act on his part so believe it or not he is accountable and responsible for the death of those not others.

It is true that the 1966 coup d'état basically led to the civil war. Ojukwu was a hero! It is true that he left for exile when Biafra fell. But, he did the logical thing to get his people out from an area where they were being massacred, and nothing was being done by the government of Gen. Gowon to prevent the inhumane massacre, and suffering of the Igbos, and other minority tribes living in the North. Any sensible person would have done the same thing Ojukwu did. The problem of the nation has its inception from the political unrest from the south west region that resulted in severe killing n burning of politicians, this was between Akintola and Awolowo political differences, the Federal level headed by the Northern politicians along side Zik their allies supported Akintola, there was treason traces on the side of Awolowo n his crew n they were all trial. Awolowo got 10years jail term n the other got 15years, this was what infuriated the coup planners of Jan 1966 failed coup, they saw it that Awolowo was maltreated by the North n the plans was to execute the coup, get Awolowo out from prison n made him the president. Unfortunately the coup was aborted by an Igbo man "ironsi aguiyi" To cut it short, there was counter coup after then massive killings of igbos in the North, Ojukwu came on board to again free Awolowo from prison on the basis that he will secede with the igbos which he agreed but it was quite shocking n betrayal the same Awolowo the igbos been trying to safe was used against the igbos in the civil war, he was the master planner of the fall of the Biafra struggle. I think Ojukwu should not be judged harshly by history considering the shenanigans by officers of the Nigerian Army at the time. His conciliatory tones fell on deaf ears. After considering his own educational background he decided to match the effrontery of soldiers who had put the country in jeopardy. Let us not forget, oil and gas, which sustain the Nigerian economy were at stake, along the interests of other foreign powers and that was a tall order, for one region to fight against; 75% of the country. It my view that when countries face irreconcilably differences they must opt out for a political stratagem which would benefit all concerned. Until very recently, there were no Generals in the Nigerian Army of Igbo origin until a famous TV station pointed out the height of discrimination suffered by Igbos in Nigeria. Countries want to hold to other regions without the benefit of economic resources to that region and the ghost of Biafra may rear up its head in some part of the world.

I lament because of some of the words of Gowon. I have also thought of these things for years from the history I knew about the Biafran war. Why would Ojukwu start a war knowing there was no prospect of victory? Why would Ojukwu plunge Igbo people into decades of despair for something he could have made a courageous painful decision to avoid. What Gowon said about Nigeria becoming a protectorate was absolutely correct. Syria, Somalia, Afghanistan, Vietnam and Iraq etc are more recent cases. Igbos through Nzogwu, Ironsi and Ojukwu were failed by their leadership. Leadership without vision, they only wanted control. First Nzogwu triggered the coup that left many Igbo officials alive. then Ironsi made little effort to totally crush the coup plotters, then most insidious of all, made Nigeria a Unitary system from the federalist system. After Ironsi was killed, Ojukwu should have just allowed the coup plotter to rule, even if he had issues with it. Why? Notice how the top military officers were Igbos at that time? The northerners have been afraid of the southerners taking over power and ruling over them. This single reason is why Nigeria did not get its independence before or at same time as Ghana. There was a huge gap in level of advancement between north and south. The coup heightened this fear. Ironsi's actions cemented the fear. Then Ojukwu's refusal to accept terms, that were in retrospect would have still left the Igbo's in far stronger position in Nigeria than after the civil war, lead to the civil war. Today, understandably, some Igbos are still hell bent on destabilizing Nigeria be cause they say they are marginalized from power. The Igbo lands are not being occupied. They own their lands and are prospering even beyond the northerners. The northerners are poorer and behind in advancement to the Igbos. So what is the issue of the Igbos that they can not have within Nigeria? Igbos have free access to the seas, trade freely, build almost freely and can agitate for anything within Nigeria without looking to break the country up. That would only lead to misery on an African wide level. At a time when Africa just started the free trade are and common passport roll-out. Those Igbos, or all groups within Nigeria, seeking to break Nigeria up would have the weight of all Africa on them. Feeling marginalised in Nigeria is bad enough, Igbos want to avoid making it African wide. The only forces that would support breakup are those that prospers from our division and wars.

It’s factual because the gap between the north and the south was and still is massive in educational and industrial advancements. There is also the issue of religion but the biggest factor, especially amongst northern elites is the advancement issue. I think the biggest blind spot of the Igbos is the lack of awareness of the fears and feelings of the other people they interact with. In their rightful need to prosper, they leave other groups behind without the giving them impression of taking them along. That can lead to envy and jealousy. In many cases can also lead to fear and hatred, which in turn spills into violence against the Igbos. It’s like the story of Cain and Abel. We all know this is the world of Cain. If Abel had reassured Cain and brought Cain along so they both can combined their sacrifice to God. God’s acceptance of the sacrifice would be seen by Cain as an equal acceptance of both of their offering and not feel jealous of Abel. Maybe that’s the true lesson from the story of Cain and Abel. No, General Ojukwu never had been a coward, but fighting with all his virtues to defend the rights and lives of his Eastern regions peoples. In fact the one General Gowon who declared the police action was the coward whose the resultant issues of that brutal war perished three million Easterners and thousands of the federal troops, that brutal war turned Nigeria into anarchy where now till today, no Igbo man or Eastern person can invade the presidency through an election. Igbos don't care if he is a boss. The problem of dictatorship is complex. He is leading his people out of marginalization, whether it is done as a democrat or as a commander that is not the point now. Igbos are looking up to a person who can pull them away from bundage. @@MrSleeplessnights he flew to the Ivory Coast via the Biafran air force having being convinced to leave by his subordinates. He didn't take a first class flight to Britain. Britain was vehemently opposed to Biafra and would have extradited him. And let's be frank, even if no one else was executed, Ojukwu would have been for treason. Some of what you said was factual, but you sounded pretty ignorant in that last comment.
