**ATTENTION RAY** - This is a known issue with many Honda V-6 models where the front VTEC spool valve leaks oil down onto the alternator below. Honda TSB 20-023 has been issued with the technical repair procedure to address this issue. I had this same problem on my in-laws 2016 Honda Odyssey. Replacing the gasket on the front VTEC spool valve resolves the issue. DO NOT replace the front valve cover gasket. It will not resolve the oil leaking issue and you will end up frying your new alternator eventually again. Once again, Honda TSB 20-023 has the repair procedure for a proper fix for this. Hope this helps others on here as well!

for the record, did this same job on my odyssey. very funny to watch you go through the same struggles and thought processes I did! I'd highly recommend the VCM delete others are recommending. also, the oil spillage above the alternator is probably coming from the rocker spool valve (VCM solenoid) gasket. I haven't finished the video yet, but if you didn't, you seriously need to replace that or you're gonna be frying the alternator again

Hey Ray, I know a guy that runs a coach / bus company andhe was telling me once that he was finding it harder and harder to find vehicles with manual box and he wanted manual gears because the auto boxs were a pain in the backside. I advised him to check the voltage on the battery because the electronics required the 24v and lots of current before it would work properly. He changed battery for a new one in the bus that had gearing issues and low and behold the gearing isses disappeared. As if by magic :)

My wife unit did exactly the same with her Honda CRV! The difference is I managed to get it in reverse but then the engine died and I couldn’t get it out of gear! This was on the road at the time. I had to put jump leads on it from my BMW ( battery in boot) and let it run for 20 mins to try and transfer enough electrons to get it back home. It was a complete success!

The reason why it wouldn't shift into reverse is because every gear is controlled by the transmission computer and without enough power the dampers to give the transmission soft shifts does work and the pcm doesn't know what gear the your shifting the transmission into so that is probably why reverse didn't work.
@ryans413
@ryans413 Жыл бұрын
My car uses the Mass Air Flow sensor to determine soft shifts I know this because my MAF died once and my car went into gear so rough it shook the entire car and scarred the hell out of me. I plugged in my scan tool and the MAF was giving no readings. I replaced the MAF and the car shifted nice and easy again.
@KenSch2020
@KenSch2020 Жыл бұрын
@@ryans413 Yeah they put parts that shouldn't be attached to the transmission and make it part of transmission circuits so if a part fails it goes into a manual mode which makes the shift dampers not work years ago they had vacuum dampers which should be installed on newer cars in case the transmission has to go in manual mode without all the computer stuff.

I done one of these without having to do as much removing. The master tech at the last shop I was at showed me the trick. What you have to do is unbolt the two braket bolts that support the A/C line. You dont have to suck out the refrigerant. Then unclip the power steering reservoir, keep the hoses on and tuck it up past that A/C line. Then remove the coolant res as you did. Remove the upper bracket and pull the alternater out. I had to do like 5 of these at the last shop and towards the last three I had a craft down at that point and was able to do them in about an hour. Cause when I first did it it took me like 3 or so. Now granted this video is quick so it seems like you got it done even faster. But thats my method and always seemed to work.

@itsadogslife...8825
@itsadogslife...8825 Жыл бұрын
14.2 volts is the perfect number, however this depends on the state of charge / condition of battery. items that are "in use" at the time of the testing. therefore everything off, lights, ac, radio, then test for acurate numbers. test two; everything on, engine just above idle, say 800~1000 RPM voltage should not be lower than 13.0 Vdc. If at any time the charging voltage rises above 14.8 Vdc then the battery will suffer and probably "boil dry" also high risk of TCU's, ECU's etc overheating and or being damaged. bulbs can even start to fail prematurely. Have fun everyone.

Fun alternator story for ya - I neglected to fix a failing alternator until it died on me 5+ hours from home. Happy driving along, when all of a sudden I notice the ABS light is on, huh annoying. Something else has died on the beater. I go to roll my window up to think about why my ABS died.. and notice it's *painfully* slow... and that the extra power draw puts the airbag light on. Panic. I realise what's happened. Battery voltage is so low, the ABS module has died. Unfortunately I am on a rural road, an hour + from the nearest shop. I power everything I can off and book it to the closest parts store. That missing gear from lack of power on the honda is a familiar feeling. I could barely get my machine into gear pulling into the park at the shop, amazingly I just barely rolled in! Now, I cant get a new alternator installed as this that little store didn't have one, so in goes a new battery and still 4.5 hours from home I decide to play chicken with my box of electrons. Turns out a 3.5L Mitsubishi will run for about 4 hours on just the battery. I was just short of home but made it to a family members place, charged it up and made it home the next day. Fun times.

Had to do an alternator on an 09 civic type r last week. Everybody has done a video on the normal civic and all take it out between the rad and engine, not on the type r, gotta take it through the headlight. But to get the light out you gotta take the bumper off but to get the bumper off you gotta take the arch trim off and to get the light out you gotta take the other side of the bumper off ‘cause you just can’t get the angle for the bolt holding the bracket on so it’s just one massive ball ache. Makes me appreciate my van a little more ‘cause there’s tons of room in places to do stuff

Heres something not many people know- Ford has a 2nd alternator option available for their trucks. The 2nd alt puts out 120vac for use on a jobsite to power corded tools. Of course you have to leave your truck idling to make power but it is a real handy option in a lot of situations. !

Looks like it needs an oil change also. The warning light comes on at 15%, and yours was reading 10%. So the light has been on for about 400 miles.

I think by telling the Wife Unit to use your Silverado, you may have opened a new can of worms. She is never gonna be happy driving the van after a taste of driving the truck. Maybe it's time to take her shopping for a suburban or Tahoe or Escalade to give her that big machine feeling and to safely transport your family about. Of course gas is a new issue when moving up, but the comfort of knowing your wife unit and child units and dog unit are safe during their travels is priceless. Plus it will make for a better family traveling experience.

On TLs with the same engine, it's much easier taking out the alternator. 30min tops and no AC disconnecting. Those minivans are a pain due to tight spaces

One Oddy owner to another. The leak that killed the alternator is most likely from the VVT solenoid gaskets, not the valve cover.

my surprise was that it went into any gear. I first had this issue twenty plus years ago with the first electronic shifting vehicle I ever drove an International bucket truck belonging to my employer.
