Oh, those are everywhere, not just in that flat. We had an older neighbour who lost his mind and couldn't tell if something was fresh or rotten. Had to redo every wall, window, floor and ceiling in our apartment so there are no holes, not even the tinies; covered the door and every cornor with a thick layer of poison and STILL there would be an occasional ginger bstrd. My mom has an ocd and she cleans, well, obssesively, so it put her and us into living hell. It stopped only when the neighbour died. IMPORTANT! We did not complain to the police because we knew he had no money and couldn't change his ways. His son and daughter in law died in a car crash few years back, so he took in his grandson to not let him go into the system. He was kind and funny. The grandson is about to be a doctor.

When I was 16 years old, I helped some exterminators get rid of in infestations of roaches from a four story tenement block. My com-padres started spraying in the basement, while I was placed as an asset in a fourth floor apartment. You see, the tenement had a hollow core, so we adopted a hammer and anvil strategy, where I would kill any roaches fleeing to the fourth floor apartments. I positioned myself outside a bathroom which abutted the building's "core" and saw something that gives me nightmares to this day. When the basement spraying started, I began to see thousands of terrified roaches streaming out of cracks in the bathroom wall. There were so many roaches, the bathroom started filling up like a swimming pool. After what seemed like only a minute, the bathroom was three to four feet deep in roaches. After only another minute, there were so many roaches, the swarm began to spill out into the adjacent hallway. I looked at the now five foot tall writhing roach pile, looked at my puny spray wand, and slammed the bathroom door shut. I decided it was time for a cigarette break, but my hands were shaking to badly to light up.

Living in squalor like this isn’t just bad, it has actual ramifications on your psyche. I’ve lived in something close to this in an apartment once. We tried our best to kill them all with traps but we knew other tenants living in the complex were just incompetent at managing them or just didn’t give a fuck. These other units rented by these people were like nests or breeding grounds for them. The sheer consistency of roaches we had to deal with was maddening. I wouldn’t be able to eat my food in peace on my desk table because I had seen them crawling up the legs of the table before. If I were to find one in my food that would be a nightmare I could not remove from memory. I’m no man of god, but a part of me prays for the tenants that lived in that apartment, and another part of me wants to burn that fucker to the ground.
