It truly was close to the $1 million mark on repairs counting sensor repairs and total figures for man power, time out of service, etc. Although most planes would simply be retired or scraped out the 404's we use are mission specific and there's not many planes out there that can do what they do. Great work horses and unmatched endurance in terms of time that can be spent in the air. We routinely do 7 to 9 hour survey missions. Hope that helps!

I*'m glad the two on board were safe and got out. I'd love to have a technical breakdown of the crash and descriptions of the sounds during the crash. I'm also curious if the plane was salvageable. My dad flew the F4 phantom in the air force for 17 years. I remember him telling me one of the most nerve-wracking moments of his career was when he lost hydraulics at 15,000ft while heading back to base. He had to dead stick all the way home after all attempts to get pressure back failed. He said he had plenty of time to consider ejecting or going in for a belly flop but really didn't want to lose the aircraft. When he went for landing he did one pass of the runway then brought it back around for the attempt. Given the fire crews had plenty of notice they had runway completely prepped, absolutely covered in foam etc and were lined up all along the runway. He said upon contact with the runway he started sliding then the right wing dipped more and resulted in the aircraft sliding sideways and it felt like it was never going to end. Next thing he knows the aircraft is trounced in foam etc and the crews are knocking on the canopy asking him if he's ok. To him the worst part of the ordeal was his flight status was grounded while the investigation took place and that not flying felt like he lost a part of himself. In the end he was cleared of any fault and could return to flight duty
@doesntmatter30682 жыл бұрын
If your dad was *"""dead stick all the way home"""* >>>> How did he do this? *When he went for landing he did one pass of the runway then brought it back around for the attempt""""* This would be IMPOSSIBLE with NO engines! You don't do a missed approach with NO engine!! I was in the AF too AND worked on the F-4. This aircraft was a good fighter, but with NO engines, this airplane fell like a rock out of the sky. Its glide ratio wasn't that great.

@jamesmaddison45462 жыл бұрын
@@doesntmatter3068 Are you always so combative? 🤔 I looked it up, ok I got a term wrong. It's loss of propulsion. I always thought dead sticking was loss of pressure leading to alot of difficulty with the flight controls, the equivalent of something like losing power steering making it really hard to steer the car at low speeds (yes I know at a decent speed it's easier to turn the wheel, also know for aircraft the faster you're going, without that system it's harder to move control surfaces due to faster airflow pushing on those surfaces) No big deal, I used one term wrong, but never said he lost the engines, well technically I did by using that term, but the rest of my comment has no mention of that happening because he didn't lose the engines. Ive got no issue admitting when I said something incorrect. It's youtube, not the end of the world dude

I flew A-4s in the training command. Simulated loss of hydraulics was a demonstration. From what I recall the A-4 was barely controllable without hydraulics. I don't know how you could fly a phantom with complete loss of hydraulics. I'm not trying to pick a nit here just curious. Maybe he lost the system controlling gear and flaps which could happen in the A-4.

Nice job!! The 404 is a really cool old airplane and I don't see or hear many around these days. I did see one fly in to KPWM a couple years ago that had turboprops on it. I thought it may have been a 425 or 441 but when i went to the FBO for a closer look, it was a 404 with turboprops on it. SO, after this landing, what was the total damage done to her? Anything beyond the props, engine tear downs and the underneath probably pretty scun up?
@TitanMan4044 жыл бұрын
Turbo props are C 406’s, damage costs came close to $750,000 in total. The craft is used for aerial survey work so it was repaired and back flying within10 months of the incident. Damage was to the Props, engines were 30 hrs short of TBO so they were swapped out, all antenna’s and lights underneath, nose gear doors, cracked co-pilot window and the worst came when the crane picked it up incorrectly and wrinkled the wing roots. These are rare old birds. Only 235 made I believe. Great for aerial work for their endurance able to stay aloft flying 8+ hr missions.

My question is: what failed in the landing gear system itself? Did the breaker fail to reset, hydraulic oil leak, servos fail? Pumps or line leaks? Did some FOD damage part of the landing gear, causing it to not deploy? Awesome job on getting down smoothly and safely, that bread went to toast, and was still buttered.

It blew a hydraulic line on T/O when retracting the gear and flaps, hence no hydraulics. The emergency blow down (air) bottle also malfunctioned and could not be utilizes. It has since been repaired and flying daily 12 years later. Thanks for watching…Like and subscribe.🤙

Didn't read description but was wondering WTF you were doing looking like you were trying to open the door while in flight. I only realized the plan had no landing gear when it finally landed.

No. They stopped when he plowed the props into the asphalt. You could hear them striking the runway then when he dropped lower the resistance was too great. You could also see the props lost a few inches off each blade.

What a perfect gear up landing! He greased it on, kept the nose up as long as possible. I show full respect!
@sl33ksnypr2856522 жыл бұрын
He also probably held the nose up longer because he didn't have flaps. Dude was probably coming in a little hotter than normal

I was in the exact position as this passenger was on a test flight as a volunteer crew chief on a restoration 1947 Twin Beach D18S. Just as the passenger on this flight assess both sides of the fuselage and wings before landing. The pilots did a great job as well as the passenger and evacuated the aircraft. We didn't know we had a problem until one of the ground crew told us our Landing gear door was ripped during our landing and I had not a single tool to pull the piano wire to release the door. After that I never flew without a tool bag. It was due to misaligned doors during swing test a week prior.

Great job! Just curious, but why not shut down the engine before touch down so they don't get destroyed with the props?

So in the case of a wheels up landing, might it not have made more sense to put it down on the grass verge alongside the runway? Probably less damage to the belly of the plane and less risk of fire? Just curious, I think I might have chosen to do that maybe?
@TitanMan4044 жыл бұрын
Ian Moone if you wanted to cartwheel, completely destroy the aircraft and set it on fire then die maybe! lol

Ian Moone he did that on water so it’s quite a bit different than an uneven, unmowed grass field.

Mainly cus you're alive to tell the story and second ,cus it was the best landing of your life, c'mon man, be honest...lol glad to see ya made it. good stuff!

I'm no pilot, but aren't the propellers supposed to stop spinning before they touch down if they feathered the props properly?
@javierrs1710 жыл бұрын
In this case, the pilot turn off the engine and fuel flow to avoid engine fire
@CastleAlba10 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind that because there was no engine failure (at least none apparent), the pilot might have wanted the power available for as long as possible. (Obviously every emergency is different, but I can see how both options could be desirable). As far as feathering the props, there are reasons for performing that step, but it would not necessarily be beneficial in this case.
@TitanMan40410 жыл бұрын
Steven R If everyone looks close they'll see that the engines were shut down at the last possible second, but you're correct in saying that you wouldn't want to shut the engines down earlier. What if a deer or some other avoidable obstacle pops up on you at the last second? With the engines still running you have the option available for a go around and another attempt should something not be right. Also these engines were at TBO so they were going to be replaced anyway. Sliding on the props and exhaust stacks saved the skin under the wings as well as the control surfaces and ultimately the plane was repaired and back in the air nine months later. 404's are a hearty beast. Thanks for the comments.
