Emergency Briefings
As part of their pre-departure duties, the Cabin Crew will provide a Safety Briefing to passengers which will include the emergency evacuation of the aircraft. This briefing will refer passengers to their individual Safety Briefing Cards but will always include pointing out exit locations and floor path lighting for particular use in poor visibility. The briefing will advise on the availability of evacuation slides at exits and may give instructions on how to open exits. Passengers seated in emergency exit rows at overwing exits where no cabin crew are located may be individually briefed on how to open these in the event of an emergency. If an airborne emergency occurs which makes an evacuation on landing likely, then the Cabin Crew will provide more detailed instructions if the time available permits.
The results of evacuation trials have shown that the opening of emergency doors by passengers was proven to be more successful when the passengers were familiarized with the instructions provided in the safety cards, or when a personal briefing was provided by a cabin crewmember.
Emergency Exits
Depending upon the aircraft, emergency exits can include normal boarding and service doors, overwing exits, and tailcone exits within the passenger cabin; and cockpit windows or hatches on the flight deck and in freight bays. These may be equipped with boarding stairs, evacuation slides or emergency egress ropes. For a more complete description of exit types, refer to section 7.2 of the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) paper Emergency Evacuation of Commercial Passenger Aeroplanes.
Cabin Crew Duties
Evacuation is normally ordered by the Captain. However, if communication with the flight crew is not possible and the situation in the cabin is judged by the senior cabin crew member to be incompatible with any delay, then they are trained to make the evacuation order themselves once the aircraft has come to a complete stop. In these circumstances, they are responsible for assessing immediate danger such as external fire or engines still running before any exit is opened. Cabin crew supervising exits must also secure the exit until the slide (if the exit is so equipped) inflates and block the exit from use in the event of a slide malfunction. They are also expected to motivate passengers using appropriate shouted commands and if necessary, physical action, to exit quickly and to leave behind personal possessions, especially items in overhead lockers or under seats. Normally, the Cabin Crew will be the last to leave their exit; however, in practice they are trained to remain on board only to the point when they believe that by staying any longer they are putting their own lives at risk. Once they are out of the aircraft, they are trained to assist in moving passengers away from the aircraft to a position where they can be safely grouped together. (Info by Skybrary)

It is incredibly easy to just label people 'idiots", or "stupid" or some such adjective. What's not so easy is thinking about ways to explain their irrational behaviour. We have the benefit of hindsight. Here's an alternative to calling them selfish, narcissistic idiots. We've all been trained on how to disembark an aircraft: 1. remain seated until the aircraft has come to a complete stop 2. retrieve all personal items 3. with personal items retrieved, walk off aircraft using exit that has been designated. This is the way we have all been trained to exit an aircraft. This is normal. There is absolutely nothing normal about an emergency evacuation. Its high stress, with passengers screaming and panicking, crew members shouting instructions. It is incredibly high stress and confusing. Under these conditions most people don't actually hear what's being said around them. They "shut down" as a mental defense against the onslaught of a rapidly changing situation. Most people cannot cope with a truly emergent situation if they've never experienced anything similar. Passengers are not trained to evacuate an aircraft in an emergency. Sure, there's the safety briefing at the beginning but that isn't proper training. In order to properly deal with high stress emergencies, one has to be trained to complete tasks while in a high stress environment. The vast majority of the population has rarely even been involved in a true emergency, let alone been properly trained in what to do. Without that emergency training - emergency preparedness - people will revert to what they already know....their "muscle memory" for a lack of a better term. In terms of leaving an aircraft, what people know is: 1. remain seated until the aircraft has come to a complete stop - CHECK! 2. retrieve all personal items - CHECK! 3. with personal items retrieved, walk off aircraft using exit that has been designated. - CHECK! It isn't because they are stupid people, its because their fight or flight mechanism, their 'primitive brain', has been activated and they don't have the experience to override it. You might point out that a couple of passengers had the wherewithal to take out their phones and start recording. I reiterate my point that, by and large, people will revert to what they know in an emergency. Those passengers likely (if the list of CaptainJoe's credits include the passengers) regularly post videos to social media. What they know is: When in doubt, record it for posterity.

@@subduedpotato7216 I highly doubt that. When people's fight or flight kicks in, and the only choice is to flee, it is not natural for them to stop and pick up big bulky objects. I think the problem here is that the people don't understand the danger that they were in. No smoke in the cabin, so they go "oh, it must be fine".

I actually commented on this issue before reading your comment. It amazes me how many people ignore the cabin crew at the beginning of the flight before taxiing to the runway; everyone puts their heads down and headphones on and pays no attention to the safety briefing. The FAA should require all electronic devices be powered off while the safety briefing is being conducted so this does not continue to happen.

Yeah, a lot of people died in an Ethiopian Airlines flight that had to land on the water because they disobeyed the pilot's instructions. He told the passengers to put on their life vests, but to not inflate them. Many people survived the crash but died because they had inflated their life vests and got trapped under the plane when it started to sink.

1) In an emergency- I don't care how well-informed a person is- it's still possible to go blank in the heat of the moment (no pun intended) _even if_ you were given emergency instructions just minutes earlier. 2) Frequent fliers have heard those safety notices so many times that they've learned how to block them out like spam or ads (see passenger with headphones). It's impossible to DEMAND people pay attention _even if_ it's for their own safety in an emergency. 3) Most people are just stupid and/or selfish- they don't pay attention to their surroundings, or consider others. ....And to some degree, I don't care _how_ selfLESS or aware you are, there's a degree of self-preservation in all of us that can override those safety and emergency instructions. That's _not_ to say I agree with people reaching for overhead bins or texting during an evacuation, merely that it is to be expected- this certainly isn't the first evacuation video I've seen where cell phones were in use and/or overhead bins were being reached for.

It's about accountability, the airlines have written their contracts in such a way that they don't need to replace any lost or damaged luggage, or any personal effects that are damaged as a result of an accident, and because of that, people (myself included) think 1: I can spend 10 seconds grabbing my shit now before I get off the plane 2: I can spend 2 years in court and thousands of dollars in lawyer's fees trying to get the airline to replace my shit, which likely won't work and I'll have to pay to replace everything out of my own pocket (then proceed to calculate how many hours of overtime i have to spend at work to replace said stuff) Option 1 will win every time But if the airlines were forced to replace any lost, damaged, or destroyed items (within 24h) and pay compensation for lost data on electronic devices, people would be far less likely to grab their shit before evacuating the aircraft

Great video. I was in an evacuation four years ago: UAL 1579 at Newark (EWR) Liberty. It was a B752, so higher up by a few feet than an A320. One thing you can’t prepare for is the speed that you move down the slide. You hit the ground with an almighty thud and if it’s concrete or asphalt, you will get some bruising. About one quarter to a third of passengers grabbed bags and took them down the slides. Some added 20-30 pounds to their body weight: that can really hurt. Only a few people sustained injuries; they probably would have been all right if they hadn’t tried to carry a bag. Also, once the fire service arrived, the police were there too. I was told that the police stayed with the plane on the taxiway and when it was towed back to the terminal. About three hours after the incident, the police escorted people in small groups onto the aircraft to recover belongings. If my experience is typical of an evacuation, personal items on an evacuated aircraft are probably much safer than a regular flight.

I remember watching an airplane safety study, done in England, years ago. They took a Boeing 737 body and put in 95 volunteers, giving them the normal instructions for a plane evacuation. Smoke was put in the cabin to signal when to start evacuating. The test was run three times with each result showing lower times for full evacuation, with the first run taking 97 seconds from start to the finish. For the fourth run, right before the test was started, the tester announced the first ten people off the plane would receive a $500 bonus, and the test was started. In 5 minutes, a total of three people made it out! The rather large man, who had held the crowd back for the gentleman who removed the emergency door in the first three attempts, picked up the doorman AND the emergency door, throwing both over the seats in front of them. He and the man behind him made it out before four people jammed the exit trying to leave at the same time. The crowd pressure from behind made it impossible to clear the exit. The last person was a small women, of the original four blockers, who was shoved out after about two minutes. The study concluded the last test was probably the most accurate rendition of an actual emergency.

That’s true, which is why the cabin crew, rather than telling us how to fasten a seatbelt which behaves like seatbelts everywhere, need to start emphasising the fact that nothing must be taken from overhead lockers because these people are putting other occupants of the plane at an increased risk of death if an evacuation is necessary and anyone carrying baggage will be held back and evacuated last!

In 1981 I was on a Chinook helicopter from Barbers Point Oahu to Pohakuloa Training Area on Big Island. A warning light indicated there was metal detected in the transmission. The pilot made the decision to make an emergency landing on Lanai. After we landed and the step was lowered we got up and headed to the exit door. I was second after a fellow soldier. He had to pause to get his boom box before getting off. We were all screaming at him to leave it. He bee-bopped down the steps as if there wasn’t an emergency. When he got on the ground all of us behind him flew around him like falcons passing a snail. We got to the line away from the helicopter and laid down. I remember looking up and saw him bee-bopping towards us with his boom box on his shoulder casually coming towards us. Even the crew chief and pilots ran around him to join us until the blades came to a full stop. If I were any part of his leadership I would have had him drug tested and court martialed. That could have gotten a lot of people injured. Why? Because of a boom box!

Traveling tipp: keep all essential valuables on your body (I found a quite convenient purse that you can strap around your side over one shoulder under the other arm which also is comfortable in warmer weather and safer from pickpockets than purses around your neck). As a photographer, I keep a backup drive of all the pictures from the trip on my body, too. Also, wear a jacket, it is usually quite cold in the cabin anyway. It offers more pockets and you don't get too cold outside in case of an evacuation. Easily done, and everything else can and will be replaced by insurance.

If it wasn't for my female supervisor who affectively grabbed their hair they would not have moved. It really makes my blood boil that there's a 'no-win-no-fee' culture... with the expectation that EVERYONE else must look after your health and safety - but when you doing that very thing people just become rude and stupid.... I think its more about passports, money, credit cards and such. If you tick away "Emergency passport service" or "Emergency cash service" off your ticket to save like 50€, your'e not getting home if you can't show who you are or can pay for a ticket home. Doesn't matter if you just survived an emergency. Thats exactly what "Emergency Passport Service" is - a entity who can vouch for your identity - and help with the issuance of a temporary passport - in case your passport gets lost in an emergency. And most people are trying to get the absolute cheapest tickets they can get - meaning they tick off all insurances, emergency services and similiar, to save some bucks off their ticket. And then when a emergency happens - they know they're not going home if they don't have their passport - they take their handbags. I think the future will be better on this, when we all have our passports, tickets, money, and everything in our mobile phone. Then I think people will more often leave luggage behind during emergencies.

They panicked, ignored poor FA, ignored capitain's announcements and rushed to exits. Pilots just had to do emergency evacuation checklist and let girls open the doors, because situation was completely out of control. Some people were trampled, some people got fractures and strains on emergency slopes. Seeing passengers going for their luggage at an emergency evac only shows how few actually listen to the safety announcements. i couldn´t help but to roll my eyes after i heard the lady asking "should we get our bags". i always have to think about the quote from the first Men in Black Movie when i see something like this. I guess my years of watching air crash investigation videos have me a bit paranoid but every time I fly I always make sure to have a rough mental idea of "where is my exit" and "what is my alt exit." I get it no one wants to see their stuff getting burnt in a crash, I would be sad if my laptop got burnt up, but you are not replaceable! And imagine later on the guilt of knowing your selfish action could have cost others their lives. I do wish as part of the safety briefing they stressed the importance of a fast yet safe evacuation from the aircraft. The FAA has the "half the exits in 90 seconds" rule which is contested for time and realism BUT the point is you do not have all day to get out. It is do it now or die waiting in the queue.

Have you noticed how other pilots, + anyone interested in aviation, learn from the mistakes of other pilots + ATC, maintenance, etc.? The improvements make aviation safer + help prevent repeating the same mistakes. CRM is one improvement. Pilots telling people to listen to flight attendants safety instructions is another.

Joe, as always, a good video. The issue about learnt behaviours and habit. As passengers we surrender control at the airport. We are shepherded (for want of a better phrase) into checking in, following the line for security, then told to proceed to the Gate, told to sit down and told when to board. We have no autonomy or input into the process. In an emergency situation, as passengers we now have to retake an element of control, put our brains into gear and 'remember the briefing' and leave our possessions behind! However, because we have so many learnt behaviours from previous journeys, such as "please take all your belongings when you leave the aircraft." I'm sure that part of the brain takes over as well! Also, as an evacuation is a bewildering and exceptional situation, passengers revert to type. I'm not excusing the behaviour of the Spirt passengers. However, if the fire was more fierce, as with British Airtours 28M (as all hell broke loose in the cabin in the panic to escape), I suspect the reaction of the passengers on the Spirt flight would have been very different.

Absolutely NO. You are wrong. Locking them AFTER the evac has started is not going to help as they have already opened them and started to get stuff out. The time to lock them is just after they depart the gate and are being pushed back. Unlocked ten minutes into the air (unless having an emergency return). Locking the bins ten minutes before landing and not unlocking them until you are parked at the gate.

There are probably several reasons for the "increasing lack of respect and trust towards anyone in authority." One, due to the prevalence of smartphones with cameras, there have been numerous instances of authorities behaving badly caught on video. Of course, most police officers do not abuse their authority, but if the news frequently shows officers doing wrong, then the general public is going to get the perception that many police officers are abusive. Two, most peoples' interactions with police are negative. The majority of people who interact with police do so because they receive a traffic ticket, often for the offense of speeding. However, unless someone is speeding in a crowded residential or business area, then going above the speed limit is harmless and most people know this. Before the use of automobiles became popular, the majority of the population did not have interaction with the police. Now, negative interactions with the police are common. I hope that your check ride went well.

@@gaminglife4292 Agree. It wouldn't have to weigh that much at all, and the latches wouldn't need to be big as they wouldn't need to withstand a lot of force: hand force from passengers (who would give up after a couple of tries), and the internal impact force from luggage moving around during turbulence. There are a few comments disagreeing with this proposal from the "lot of added weight" crowd. Initially I couldn't figure out why these people would be against such safety measures until I realised they've had to evacuate an aircraft at some time and they took their luggage with them, LOL!

Oh my! That was insane! I was once in an almost emergency landing. From Brasilia to Recife, my home town. I’ve taken many flights since I was a child so I’m very familiar with all the procedures. This time I noticed we were approaching from the south, I could see the beach. A while later I noticed that we where waaay past the airport and making a turn returning to the airport area kind of above the sea. There was no announcement like there’s an emergency on the ground or too many planes waiting to land. So I guesses we had a problem and were getting rid of the fuel, i put some credit cards and my id in my pocket just in case. In the end I guess they solved the issue because we landed with no trouble but there was a parade of fire trucks and ambulances. I wasn’t at the emergency exit but close enough that I was ready to be there if necessary. Everybody was calm, I don’t think anybody else noticed until we landed or they were just like me. It was ok for me, but my poor parents. My flight was “landing” on the panel for almost an hour and all the other landings were on hold. My dad kept checking “flight aware”. Everybody was getting really agitated because there was no news about what was going on. There should be someone ready to deal with situations like this at the airports.

I was a passenger on this flight sitting in row 4 C. I can tell you it was insane, there were absolutely no instructions although it’s common sense to leave your bags. The pilot never said at least as I could remember to the flight attendants to go to there stations. In fact there were no instructions other then remain seated. Who in there right mind is going to take there seat. Picture the scene. Plane was stopped, flames visible from row 4. The smells of fire and burning rubber. All I wanted was the door open so we could get out. The pilots did a great job however the flight attendants were were absolutely terrible. In fact the side with the fire the slides were deployed. Not realizing I went down that slide only to feel the heat from the flames. We had zero instructions outside the aircraft. It was not until a pilot came off that had us all move further away. On the bus back to the terminal the pilot was very informative. Telling us exactly what happened. When we got to the terminal that was much worse then the actual plane fire. No one to help us. I left everything on board. We had to idea how to get our belongings. I called the 800 number and was told my flight was in route to Florida. They had no idea what even occurred and this was at least 2 hours later. Finally someone walks around with sticky notes and ask people to write down what was on board and our phone number. At that time we all started to get text messages from the airline. Not with any info or a number to call but just a Sorry for the delay. Here is a $7.00 food Voucher . 2 days later still no call. Unable to reach anyone other then India. I go back to the airport where my personal items were sitting behind the counter. I did about 2 weeks letter get a detailed letter explaining what happened and approximately 600 in flight credits.

I'm dressed appropriately for the weather until 10K feet, with proper shoes on, and any essentials like my phone in my pocket where I won't lose it. Above 10K I relax, but on descent to landing, I do all of that prep again before passing below 10K, until we've pulled up to the gate and the seatbelt sign is off.
