Hybrid light always has a 20% off discount on Black Friday. Surge has lightbulbs that recharge while in use in your lamps. They are great for a short term emergency so you are safe while you set up for a longer term emergency. I have had a health problem this week and am learning new things about preparedness. I injured a knee. My neighbor helped me to my car and lent me his cane so I could get to the store from the parking lot. I purchased a knee brace and my own cane. Also an elevated toilet seat and a 25 foot extension cord so I can charge my phone next to the chair where I am sitting and sleeping while recuperating. And thank goodness for kind neighbors. I have a portable DVD player that I can watch movies on for entertainment while I rest. We need to think about survival if injured because many could be injured in a natural disaster emergency.

For economic emergency lighting - Get several decent quality solar yard ornament lights. Simply bring them inside when power goes out. Also... after Christmas - buy some long strings of LED white C9 bulb christmas lights. Super low wattage. I ran a forty foot string through house and had lighting in all rooms for four days off of a car battery jump pack and a 100 watt inverter. Dont discount kerosene lanterns. I couple those with a three burner Amish kerosene cookstove and a couple kerosun heaters. I even have a 22 wick kerosene canning burner. Note - in bad times you can substitute diesel fuel for kerosene - if you put in some 90% or better ethyl alcohol to thin it for cold weather. Kerosene was a staple in homes in the late 1800's to about 1940. Still is in Amish communities.

I have about a dozen of the $Tree solar yard lights. They are not especially bright but one gives plenty of light to read by, you can carry one with you to get around the house without tripping on things and if you have 3-4, it is more than enough for comfortable lighting.

I take the batteries out of those lights and charge them in my charger every once in awhile. The solar panels are okay for maintenance but can't fully charge the batteries. If you have those and a USB charger, they're decent lights.

Since we get a lot of earthquakes and also have cats - open candles are not an option. I met a gentleman in a thrift store who mentioned that he’s currently homeless living in his car (in Alaska). He mentioned that he was using candles and clay pots. I remembered your episode on clay pots and tried to discourage him using those. I told him about the UCO candles. Alaska Prepper had done a review on those and actually tested how much they increased the room temperature in his “bunker”. We have a couple of the UCOs as well as the battery operated one you have and love that one as well. We also have several other battery operated lanterns that are great. And if we really need A LOT of light we have a shop light that’s rechargeable by USB port. But we also use emergency lightbulbs and absolutely ❤️ ❤❤those. The work like a normal lightbulb but have a way to charge up while in normal use. When the power goes out they come on automatically. You can also unscrew them and use as a portable light. Would love for you to do a review on those. We’ve had ours for years

Solar rechargeable items are fine if you are able to put it out in the sun to recharge. Here on the Canadian prairies we sometimes get as low as -30F. Something would freeze and crack outside for 4 - 6 hours. I love your show.

You can use solar stake lights to charge your rechargeable batteries. I kind of stumbled upon this idea when I was changing out the weaker, poorly made batteries that normally come with solar stake lights. If you put a better quality, more powerful rechargeable battery into a stake light, the stake light will stay lit for much longer. Then I concluded that using solar stake lights to recharge batteries is a cheap way to keep your rechargeable batteries charged up & ready to use. Edit: You'll need to remember to remove the batteries from the stake lights before sunset. Otherwise, the stake lights will light up when it gets dark. I've considered splicing a longer cable & a simple on/off switch on a solar rope light that I have & permanently mounting it inside the house for emergency lighting.

I changed out my rechargeable battery stash for all AA & AAA and purchased several adapter kits that make those fit C and D battery items. It is not only cheaper on battery purchases but allows us to have what we need on hand no matter what. I also have 9V batteries that are charged by USB and they work great. A hint for lighting - hanging your lantern above your space provides much more useful light. And headlamps are more useful than they seem before using them. Great video as always!

I’m a little old fashioned. I collect the old oil lamps. The lamp oil is still relatively inexpensive and a little lasts a long time. I adore them. I also have solar, battery operated, rechargeable, etc as well but I really prefer the oil lamps.

Thanks, Pam and Jim. Very good presentation of different ways to get lights and have power. Since i have garden solar lights i use even in my flower 🌸 pots outdoors and in house. I perfer to go ahead and spend for batteries because the sun does not always shine when you need it , even on Florida!😊

What do you think about using outdoor solar pathway lights as emergency lighting? We have ones with stakes that line our driveway, and they put out a lot of light. I thought of having small pails filled with sand or dirt inside and bringing the solar lights in when the sun goes down, putting the stakes down in the pails to light each room. I think it would work.

I bought the solar panels light and LOVE IT. It has a very pleasant light, adequate light for any task, and long lasting runtime. I got it for checking on my chickens, working late in the garden, transferring wood for the stove, as a secondary source that is reliable and can be hung up or set down. They don't mention the velcro strap, but I think it's to be put on a backpack to charge while you hike. My daughter and her boyfriend got lost on a new trail, it was getting dark, and there was no cell reception for GPS (luckily someone came by and gave directions). This would have been great if they had to stay in place because of the length of time it runs!

Rose! I bought the yellow LED lamp light you recommended for me and my dad. He's a man who has every tool already. He LOVES it! We both use it all the time. The charge lasts forever and he said its never run out during a project and he recharges it that night. If anyone is looking for a christmas gift, I recommend that yellow lamp. I thought about getting the work light for my husband since he does handyman/carpentry work but after reading the reviews, I don't think it would be bright enough for his work. On the other hand, we are definitely going to get that solar powered Lepwing lantern. We want a light that is not dependent on electric power for recharging.

Thank you for the update on emergency lighting. We might check out your newest one as it would be easy to solar power it up and the note said that you could charge your phone with it as well. We purchased from Costco last year lights like your battery powered one but you could charge them with USB or use batteries. They can be used for charging your phone or anything that could use that connect which it does come with. There are 3 power levels and it does last a long time on a charge. Worth looking into. We also had purchased a couple on Amazon. Thanks for always showing us new ways to stay prepared.

What exactly is it you’re preparing for? I live in Denmark, one of the Scandinavian countries. My government recommends for me to have 1 week of supplies. Tomorrow we are expecting a hurricane, as I’m living on an island, I expect that the ferry will not be sailing and that our island will be isolated for 1 or 2 days. The electricity will not be affected as we are supplied by windmills and sun cells here on the island. Snow is what could isolate us, but only for a short period of time as our neighbours all have tractors and will clear the roads. 10 years ago we had so much snow that the tractors couldn’t cope and we have supplies dropped by helicopters. Our heat comes from our stove and wood comes from our forest. We do have a power plant that distributes heat to our small hamlet, the heat comes from burning our waste. My neighbour is newly widowed and he broke his leg yesterday, so he is now here with us, until his daughter can come and get him. If she can’t come, then he stays with us until he can cope for himself. I’ve never talked to him, I only know his first name, but he needs help, and we can help

Hello Denmark 🇩🇰! It’s not unusual for us to lose power for way longer than a week depending on where you live. The US is a very large country and help can be difficult to move in quickly. Hurricane Katrina is only one example. Maui’s fires still have about 8,000 without homes. If you need to live in your vehicle or a tent, you need to be prepared to be off grid. A bigger country sometimes means bigger problems. I wish you the best and stay safe during the hurricane incoming. Thank you for tending to your neighbor, that’s what we do as humans. You are awesome! I hope to visit your glorious country someday.

Denmark is 42,394 sq km. The United States is 9.16 million sq km, 216 times more than Denmark . We have many areas that are remote from wind power and older areas still have overhead power lines. Winter can cause havoc in these areas, so we teach self sufficiency. We have our neighbors to rely on, but you can agree that "there's no place like home." ❤

@@eqbwilh It was my understanding that America is a union of individual states, I’m so sorry for that misunderstanding. We can agree on the fact that your infrastructure is by European standards very poorly designed. In some cases size matters, but not always. You live in one of the richest countries in the world with a 3 world infrastructure, do something about it, you’re treating the symptoms, not the cause.

Back in the day before solar I had a few oil lamps, flashlights, and some candles for light when the power went out. (still do) Power went out a few times a year where we lived in the country and once for over a week. Now I have a Bluetti 180 which will power lights for a long time but I am seeing that the portable lights you have would be great to use for going out to the barns or for wood in the hoop house. Time will tell if the power is more reliable at our new farm. Great suggestions for lighting options I can research and thinking that another small Bluetti would be very handy either in the house or shop or barn. Already have the solar panels.
