Old UK Army trick I was taught when living in a fox hole. Pooh in an empty sandbag and fill it up partway using the entrenching tool and poohing in it and filling it with soil until it is half full. Then fold and stitch it up. Good for almost a week. It never failed! 😂😂😂

If you pull one side of the bucket handle out of the hole, you'll find you can slip the toilet paper roll right on it, then put the wire handle back. It makes a very nice TP roll holder. :)

I made a toilet the other day...I bought a new toilet seat with all the plastic nuts and bolts at Wally world....attached it to a white plastic lawn chair first then drill a few holes where the hole should be, then got a jig saw and drilled the hole....I marked it first......put a 5 gallon pail underneath with a green plastic bag....use a lid when not in use...it is so stable and easy to use especially for seniors or children....store in shed or garage when not in use

I just bought a folding portable bedside commode, holds up to 300lbs so most can use it and I believe it was $45. The box it's in is 3 inches and with living in an apartment I hide the box along the back of the living room closet. Being over 200 lbs at the time and disabled, I didn't want a bucket to break down on me.

@suzisaintjames Outdoor toilets are referred to by many terms throughout the English-speaking world. @@suzisaintjames well an outhouse is a permanent structure you actually dig out a deep hole beneath the toilet area. You can actually fit a toilet seat on the hole that has been elevated above the hole. I’m pretty sure it’s the same. I’m from the south, so we just call them outhouses. My grandmother had an outhouse when I was growing up. The worse part was always being scared something would bite my tush. If the time comes we have to use it, I have Raid stocked up. 😁

@@lassie7777 , 🤔 hmmm? I'm a city girl, but I think wood ash has a different purpose. If you take wood ash and mix it with water, you get lye. Which would breakdown the outhouse deposits. I wouldn't use lye in a bucket, especially in the house... an outhouse has plenty of ventilation. The saw dust or coco husk is to absorb the moisture, eliminating the smell (flys are attracted to the smell).

Thank you so much for this video! This has actually been on my mind lately as a prep I should do; now I have the info I need. FYI: on a video for another KZbinr, a commenter said that a ‘shower’ alternative she came up with is to half-fill a spray bottle with her favorite shower gel, then fill the rest with water. If you are having to use these make-shift toilets one could assume you don’t have the means to shower either. If you have the spray bottle prepped, however, you could stand on a towel & ‘spritz’ yourself clean. I thought I would prep a second spray bottle with just water, to ‘spritz’ rinse. I thought it was a great idea, so just sharing here for people to consider. 🌹

I have been out on mission trips. No shower. We take a smallest amount of water and ever little amt of soap to wash those important parts even a paper towel that can be trashed or a wash cloth you can clean before leavening the shower station. I would not mix soap and water together in a bottle. You could have put to much soap and have to use more water. Our toilet had a sewer line but no water. You have to take about 1/2 gallon of well water put in the toilet bowl after using to flash it down. I’m sure the same would do in the states if only the water was out. No broke lines.

The pine pellets she is speaking of is the best thing you can use, if you pour about 3 to 6 cups in the pee bucket, when you pee in the bucket, the pine pellets will absorb the liquid and turn into a powder, there will be absolutely NO SMELL, we do this during camping, we keep the bucket in the tent in a different section, NEVER a smell or odor, after a few days you empty the bucket, but because the powder can get heavy, I do put a bag inside allowing me to just remove the bag without having to pick the bucket up and pour the powder into a bag can get pretty heavy and messing with powder being spilled but again there is no odor. I have not tried this with poo. The main reason for using pine pellets is that I can't stress enough. NO ODOR OF ANY SORT, many people say use cat litter, no, no, no, it will eventually smell.

hi Pam, I'm so glad you were able to visit us in Oregon, I'm a native Oregonian and love it here. Your video is so apropos as September was disaster preparedness month in Oregon. Often people overlook the fact that it is kind of dangerous to live here...as you pointed out Tsunami and Earthquakes in addition we have several active Volcano's and now Wildfires every season. While we don't get a lot of snow we do get Ice Storms which whip out power for long period the last one was 4 years ago in which we spent 11 days without power and made use of a very similar bucket system...that said we are prepared on a number of fronts and coming from a healthcare background take hygiene very seriously. Thank you for covering this very important issue. as a final thought I have been testing human urine as a fertilizer, in my garden, for the last 5 years. I have 4 of the same above ground beds set up...the first one is a control, the second is Miracle Grow fertilized bed, the 3rd Human Urine (1:10 water) and the 4th is Urine (1:10) and hard wood ash (to create a complete NPK fertilizer) I have had great success and find urine to be a godsend, I know that I am going way off course here..Once you find some time check out the U of MI testing on this very topic. Another method I saw to use your own toilet like a bucket - shut off the water to the toilet at the wall. Flush one last time to empty the tank. (you can also save that water in a bucket to use later) With the toilet bowl and tank now empty, stuff a rag or something into the bottom of the bowl like a plug, so your bag doesn't slip down it. Now place your bag into the toilet bowl. Line the bowl just like you would a bucket, hanging over the top. Put another bag inside of that one and secure it at the top, under the toilet seat. You can put more than two if you like. Then just remove the used bag and handle/dispose of it like you would the bag from a bucket.

This is very good information to have. Also important would be how to get oneself clean in low water situations, such as bathing/showering. My mom had a friend whose family escaped Germany during the 2nd world war. When things had initially gone really bad, and people had extremely limited water to use, you still had to get yourself clean. She said you’d fill up a pitcher (around 2 litres or so), and that was your allocation of water to clean yourself. You’d use a mug and a damp towel to get yourself wet, then soap up to get clean. Then you’d use the remainder of the water a little bit at a time to rinse off the soap, and use a damp towel to get off any lingering soap. To be honest, it sounded grim to be sure, but it taught me that people will find a way if they’re prepared to handle whatever situation life throws them. She loved taking nice hot showers in her home during good times, but when hurricanes came, and messed up the water system, we all knew how to cope with keeping ourselves clean thanks to her valuable advice all those years back.

I bought a copy of "The Humanure Handbook" ages ago, and I think it should be in every prepper library. We've used a 'sawdust' toilet for a year and a half without any issues. Something else I have in my preps are the materials for a three bucket water filtration system (three 5 gallon buckets, enough fine gravel, sand, activated charcoal to fill each bucket, nozzle for the bottom bucket). This can be used as a prefilter for things like a Berkey filter (helps them last longer since all particles and dirt are filtered) for all drinking water ~ and I still boiled mine before use. For the compost toilet you can use just about any organic matter; sawdust, pine pellets, leaves, even plain soil. The one thing I will recommend is that if you plan to ~ or think it is likely ~ that you'll be using this system for several months is to 1) paint the exterior of your bucket black, 2) have enough buckets to rotate through them, 3) don't use a bag and use the humanure composting system which processes everything into compost safely. If you want to separate your waste, it is far easier to purchase a urine diverter ~ and to build a box to hold the two containers. Piling up several months worth of fecal matter in bags is unsafe in any urban environment. Ideally several humanure compost bins would be set up. If carbon matter is used each time the toilet is used there is no odor ~ with or without a lid. The other thing to consider is toilet paper, or the lack of it. Purchase washcloths in bulk to be used as 'family cloth'. Keep three buckets of water by the toilet; one filled with clean water to wet the cloths, one filled with clean water to rinse them after cleaning in the bleach solution, one filled with a dry bleach/water solution. Change the clean water every day, and keep the bleach solution covered when not in use. Wet your cloth before using, clean it with the bleach solution and rinse, hang to dry. Once dry you can launder them as usual. Keep toilet paper for use during illness only, particularly for contagious illnesses. For feminine hygiene products, purchase reusable cloth pads or a menstrual cup for long term events. It's fine to store some for use for a month or two, but longer than that you are just wasting valuable storage space. I do keep a box of pads and a box of tampons in my first aid 'closet'. Both are excellent sterile products for large wounds or penetrating wounds initially to control bleeding. Lastly, purchase and install (check your local codes, you may be required to have a plumber install) a backflow valve in your sewer line. This prevents sewage from backing up into your home if the local system is down. You can bet your last dollar that there will be people still flushing, and every home that is lower than they are is at risk for this. If your home is contaminated with raw sewage, you will have no choice but to leave until such time that it can be properly cleaned. Pay the $40 for the valve, and pay a plumber if necessary to install it. The cost is minimal if it means your home is protected from contamination!

@@L.J.01 Technically they aren't ~ but they are considered close enough for EMT use, and depending on what is going on, a tampon comes sealed in plastic wrap and will plug up a bullet wound until proper medical care can be obtained. For wounds that are large, or that must drain, pads do the same and are easier to wrap around a wound than baby diapers. Not everyone has (or can afford) trauma bandages/compression bandages. I've used them for both human wounds and on my livestock on occasion and never heard a complaint from doctors or veterinarians. I also know more than a handful of EMTs and other first responders who carry both in their kits which is why I mentioned it.

For the POO bucket I wouldn’t put extra clean trash bags in there because if there is a leak in the poo bag that is being used, the liquid could get onto the clean bags. Instead, I would put about 1/2”- 1” of baking soda mix with a cup or two Downey Scent Booster Beads. The former is used to absorb any leaked liquid and the latter is to cover up the smell. I use this method for the trash bin in the kitchen and it works great.

I've long since started using composting toilet system similar to what Off Grid with Doug and Stacey have taught/shown on their channel. I love it! It requires a little bit maintenance, but it's very practical because the compost produced can fertilize the garden in a couple years.

I use the hotel method of storing new garbage bags under the current one, in my office where the trash is dry. But I won't do it the kitchen or in a poo bucket, because every once in a while a bag will leak. And if it leaks, it leaks all over my store of new bags... NO thank you. I keep the roll of toilet paper to use ... clean in a plastic coffee "can"... I can store the new poo bags below the toilet paper in that coffee "can" so it will be handy... no, not under the poo... No sir. 💕🌞🌵😷

Love this Video. I was one that watched your original and bought pool noodles a year ago. I was unsafe with that. What I have done is the same as you, but I can't squat like that, so I had from a Cancer Surgery, an over the toilet seat, so I have that cleaned, sanitized and wipe it down every week, so I can use that for one, and the other I needed it higher so I picked up paving bricks to elevate and stored in my garage. Can move to my mud room in a nano second. I have a kitty, so I had to take her into consideration and have a third bucket that I can keep her litter box clean and dispose into her own bucket. What great tips, so if you have knee problems, buy inexpensive pavers the square ones maybe 2 elevate to a good height. Weather Modification is a real thing, HAARP and well stranger things have happened. Prayers for NC, TN, WY, CA. Thank you.

I’m currently reading an excellent book on this subject. The Humanure Handbook by Joseph Jenkins. I haven’t gotten to the part on how to manage the waste yet but it is an interesting subject even if it is gross. I have one of those bedside commodes, which would be A LOT easier for older people (like me) to use. I’m afraid that if I lowered myself onto that bucket I’d never be able to get up again 😂. You could place a bucket under the chair and it would work just as well.

I second your book recommendation! It’s been a long time since I read it, but it made me upset that we use huge amounts of clean water to flush our waste. Also, he explains what, why, & how waste causes illness - and how to avoid it. I believe he said it makes excellent fertilizer, but he doesn’t use it on his garden vegetables as a precaution- but all other plants will benefit.

Very needful and useful information delivered in a straightforward, non-embarrassed manner. Thank you. Urine contains nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium--good for plants. This is so much better than using water for flushing in an emergency situation. Water would be too valuable to be flushed down the toilet. Stacking buckets could solve two problems--extra height would be added to make standing back up easier, and the underneath bucket would be a good place to store extra bags.

I did not know about the toilet seats that fit buckets! Great! Also, a medical supply store has inexpensive commodes that are more satisfactory for the elderly or disabled. I have used the pellets as cat litter for 5 years and it works very well to control odor. Composting toilets are popular in tiny houmes and many RVs. There is also a portable bident for the pee bucket users. No TP necessary if you have one, except for the poo. I keep TP separate from the toilet in our RV. That waste is then burned.

Yes, the pine pellets do expand a lot when they become wet. So, premoistening is a good tip. Or, even if you don't do that, they will start expanding as soon as anything moist touches it.

We lived on a well and we were without power during a Nor'Easter back in early 2004. It was 9ne of the worst storms as it was hurricane force winds with freezing rain as it was in December! Millions of trees were uprooted and power was down!! We had State of eomergency and then escalated to Federal emergency as many homes were without piwer, without water and the temperatures in the homes were below freezing point. We brought our family into the only room with our fireplace. We ran out of wood on the 3rd day. But a neighbor close by told us we could use his wood stack as he and his family had a generator. In New England most homes are heated using oil. Most homes had those pipes burst leaving an awful mess and thousands of dollars to fix. Other homes had wood burning stoves and wood pellets which burned longer and cleaner.

Pee & poo same bucket in smaller bag & 1 to 2 times a day tie that up & leave in bottom of big bag. Add new small bag & repeat for 3ish days. I had seen another similar video that suggested using the thing hospitals use called urine hats to put in the bucket for urine. Then, as Pam mentioned add some gray water and dispose in the yard. Then you would only need one bucket. What I have more questions about is disposing of feces. Others have spoken of burying it, but away from water source. In a smaller yard that would be a problem. But I can't picture storing it anyplace.
