Great idea. I would consider putting three X's with red or orange tape on the silver side too. Some people don't realize how badly you need the silver side facing out to reflect heat away in the desert in the hot summer months. Shading up in a desert survival situation is more important than people realize, especially people not familiar with desert survival.

Dave is one of the most humble and caring individual that God has blessed us to learn survival techniques from. People need to know this stuff even if they are just day hickers.

You should do a series on how to disappear Dave, how to become as close to invisible as is humanly possible, not the grey man but the invisible man, for those times when you don't want to be seen.

One of my uncles taught me how to set up the same bipod shelter that he learned from my great grandfather that served in Germany and France in WWII. They at times when not in a wooded area would use what they had on hand for the bipods, rather shovels riffles etc to be able to set up a ridgeline. Good stuff as always Dave and thanks for sharing!

I would stick to one big black 'X' on the tarp ( a silver tarp is much more visible from the air) then turnover the soil nearby to make a 10 meter 'X' with the arms of the 'X' 1 meter wide.

That is a nice informational video and that is something they didn't teach me while in the Air Force, but something pilots need to know if their airplane crashes and they have their emergency kit handy.

I was involved with a Rescue situation involving a dehydrated hunter who ran out of water. This was in a treeless antelope area of Northern Nevada. He used his spotting scope tripod and his tarp to make a shade shelter. The local sheriff did not deploy air assets to find him. Since the hunter was lying on the ground, his shade shelter turned out to be the only thing I was able to see standing above the sage. The tripod shelter provided both shade and a signal to searchers on foot to find the man. As an aside, I was taught in a desert survival class it is quicker and takes less energy to cut vegetation an put it in ziplock bags in the sun than making a solar still. This may be true, but the desert plant’s tendency to hold on to its moisture is not circumvented by the ziplock bag. This was evidenced by ziplocks around the man’s shelter full of sage and no water. On edit, I guess I should’ve asked him if he’d been getting any moisture out of his mini stills before I crap all over the idea.

Dave I see your playing with that drone more and more. Maybe you should add a series of just awesome drone footage and how your getting and staying at the best dronography sites- world-wide. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for walking us through this brilliant quick and easy shelter. I've been using Corporal Kelly's two blanket shelter with one in orange and the other in green or a black camo version I found online. A third blanket I use for my shelter floor over a sheet of tyvek. I have an OCD issue in that I like to keep my gear clean and cared for. I still have military gear after retiring 32 years ago. This set up is all part of my bug out bag. On the reflective side of my black camo blanket I placed three large X's using neon orange duct tape plus keep the remaining role in my pack. I don't know who "invented" the Prusick knot but it's a godsend. I use them (#36 Sgt Knots bank line) on a clothes bar across the back of my Jeep interior to hang emergency gear, IFAK, Mora Companion, binoculars, bags, cordage, gorilla tape, bungee cords of various sizes, etc. for quick access in an emergency.

Hey Dave! Another awesome video dude! I am curious, looking at the setup, how well it'll stand up to inclement weather? I've never used a set-up that didn't involve a really strong support like a tree. Would a strong wind pull the stakes out the ground on this? Would love to know! Hope you and the family are doing well! Nothing seems to stop you doing what you love, so mad respect to you man. Also, your trap line shelter from the series looks like a luxury palace!!

This is excellent for easily creating a windbreak after pitching my tent. Yes, I would definitely not want to use an orange-colored space blanket for a windbreak. All I need to do now is prepare two more 6' lines for the bipod guyout lines. Yes, I've already created my ridgeline with prusiks. Creating a windbreak with bipods & tarp should be easier than making a lean-to out of logs that I most likely would have to saw, strip branches, etc.

I used to be all about the “camo/neutral” colours for my gear. Nowadays im the total opposite, everything I buy I look for the brightest most unnatural colours I can find, Pink, orange, red ect, I lose way less gear now lol

This is great. Serious question though - would small craft pilots truly call this in if they flew over and noticed the triple-X? Or just keep flying and ignore. I’m really wondering if this would trigger a rescue. Guess the question is for any pilots, etc that might not be SAR. Thanks.

I like the idea of pre "x" ing the blanket, but if it's stored away for a while, especially in a hot place aren't you worried about ending up with a big sticky mess?

Thanks for the video Dave. I have a question that I'd like to put to everyone. In some of emergency kits, a lot of us choose to "be seen", and then carry high vis shelter tarps, etc. Many of us also think however, that situationally dependent, we may not want to be seen, and choose OD, Coyote, or Camo Shelters instead. What are everyone's thoughts on what to put into an emergency kit. My own personal consideration is to have two sets in the cargo area of my vehicle, one with a lot of signal orange, and one set of earthtones/camo. When a specific situation arises... swap that gear out for what is best thought to be considered best, based on that situation. Thoughts everyone?

Very curious I’ve used ground to air signals for many years in the military and other jobs to include wilderness paramedic SAR .Your three xxx is for cancel supply drop in UK or has something changed since I retired. As it’s usually one x for rescue just curious I know groups of three but I was always taught three separate Xs on ground 10ft using trees ect and or one marker panel with one X 🤔
@DavidCanterbury4 жыл бұрын
So for me it goes back to the 3 of anything, 3 fires, 3 ax’s, 3 lines etc...you are correct one X would do fine as well or SOS if you could manage it without butchering it in duct tape lol
