Greg Lake was such a great singer and acoustic player. I wish ELP would have done more songs in this style.

They did many tracks like this, you have to look for the deep cuts. Works Album Vol 2. has several tracks on both sides that features Greg Lake's wonderful guitar work and his vocals. And Greg Lake played acoustic, electric, and bass guitar. Not only could he sing, but write the incredible words he sang.

The late-60's to mid-70's period birthed some of the best progressive Rock ever..and ELP was right there at the top.

What's so cool about this song is that through the whole song other than Carl's percussion, Greg plays all acoustic and electric guitars and bass guitar not to mention the vocals. What a talented young chap he was.

And he can chew gum at the same time. I'm referring to a live video of Greg Lake playing "still you turn me on" and chewing gum. It was impressive! Some people can't walk and chew gum. Greg could not only sing perfectly and play perfectly He could chew gum at the same time. He was a gifted musician!

This song always gives me the deepest sense of nostalgia of ANY song. It always brings to mind a dearly departed friend from my school days, who introduced me to the rock/fusion blend. We never saw each other after our teens, but ever so often he would return to my home town and would ask about me. We never managed to meet up, and then the news came from a mutual friend that he had passed . I felt such a sense of loss! This Caucasian brother, meeting up with a Black boy from the Caribbean in an Episcopalian church school in the 4th grade until 12th grade graduation, hanging out, listening to music, smoking weed, playing sports, all while getting an education; not merely of the academic variety, but on a much broader landscape, that would serve us well throughout our lives! Too bad we always assumed that we would have forever to reunite at some point. Bless his soul, and thank you ELP!

I think this is a good song to introduce yourself to ELP -- it's incredibly beautiful, but also very accessible... and most of their music is far more complex, as they are first and foremost a progressive rock band. But I do think you'll love it -- and you may find it stretches your musical comfort zone just a little bit. I grew up listening to their album "Brain Salad Surgery" and still love it to death.

Keith Emerson was the best Keyboardist in Rock. He made the Moog Synthesizer into an instrument of new sound.

I agree. Robert Moog had this 'thing' he was trying to sell. He thought that advertising firms would be interested in its new sounds. Then, he heard what Keith Emerson was doing, and said -- YES, that is what I invented this for.

Close to the first but not quite. They used it a couple of years earlier on Lucky Man and the actual first use was by The Monkees in 1968 on their album "Pisces Aquarius..." Micky Dolenz had one of only 2 synthesizers in the US at that time.

I had much the same thought, GMM, that this was a great initial entry for him to listen to - though Harri's description of "baptism" is better than anything I could say, haha. So the question then becomes, do we gently lower him into the waters of ELP (a la Lucky Man, etc.), or do we toss him in headfirst (a la Karn Evil 9), and hope he'll stay afloat? 😉

Como ya comenté en otro sitio (con la reacción a ELO) yo escuché a ELP en 1977 por vez primera. No sabía quienes eran.

ELP was the 2nd rock concert i saw, way back in 1977 at the Olympic stadium in Montreal, Carl Palmer was one of the first few drummers that inspired me when i was a young drummer, now I'm an old drummer, and Greg Lake has one of the nicest thick warm singing voices I've ever heard. Sadly Emmerson & Lake are gone now, but Palmer is still drumming like a 30 year old

Love this progressive rock supergroup from the 70's. They had a unique sound that included classical music with jazz & symphonic rock elements. Also loved their use of the Hammond organ, Moog synthesizer & piano. Their sound is like no other band. From Wikipedia: Emerson died on 11 March 2016 in Santa Monica, California, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. His body was found at his Santa Monica home. Following a post-mortem, the medical examiner ruled Emerson's death a suicide, and concluded that he had also suffered from heart disease and from depression associated with alcohol. According to Emerson's girlfriend Mari Kawaguchi, Emerson had become "depressed, nervous and anxious" because nerve damage had hampered his playing, and he was worried that he would perform poorly at upcoming concerts in Japan and disappoint his fans. Such a loss. We still mourn for both him and Greg. RIP guys 😔😢😭🥀🙏

The title track or "The Endless Enigma" (make sure you have all three parts, around 10 minutes total) will give you a good taste of their capabilities without being quite as Much as "Tarkus" or "Karn Evil 9" are. And then there's their cover of "Hoedown," which SMOKES.
