I was a flight attendant for 40 years. The absolute highlight was meeting Greg, as well as the Keith and Carl and being invited to to their sold out concert in 1977, along with my roommates, and out to dinner afterwords. It was the most memorable experience of my long career. They were generous, professional and Greg in particular, shined in an otherworldly way. There will never be anyone like him nor anything like the artistry the three of them created together.

I think Trilogy was the first album I ever bought. My parents listened to stuff like Glen Campbell and Ann Murray, so the first time I listened to this album all the way through, I felt like I'd been transported to another planet. I was lucky enough to see them play live twice. Even now, 50 years later their music flies straight into my soul like none other. They were just too brilliant for words.

Greg Lake literally saved my life. The night my mother died in 1980 I drove my car up a mountain pass intending to drive it off a cliff. I sat in my car at the top of the pass and listened to Closer to Believing. I decided I had to go in living so maybe one day I could reach someone the way that he sang to me. I got out of my car and walked home. Sheriff found my idling car and brought it back home the next day. I never got famous but I’m still out playing for people at 60 years old. Thanks Greg!

Not our most popular young musicians, no, but we've got artists like FKA Twigs right on the edge of the most famous people who is very young, yet highly artistic and very deep. I agree with the other person, it's not very common for humans in general to be deep. When you run into a deep artist, you've got to hold on for dear life because you've found a treasure!
@TahtahmesDiary
@TahtahmesDiary 3 жыл бұрын
And now that I think of it, this "deep group" didn't go down in history like some of the less deep groups of the time did. I think your generation might have also been more into frivolity than you are willing to admit. We don't leearn about these guys in Rock N Roll history classess (I've taken many) and they also havent been on any greatest hits albums I've bought from the time period. Sometimes the best artists don't go down in history the way the most popular artists do, but that doesn't mean the generation had no deep artists it means they didn't reach the heights of noteriety that more universal "pop(ular)" music does.

Serenity R., one thing is for sure, life was a lot less hectic then .... and today's technology did not exist the way it did back then, and thus for some reason .... musicians choose to be a lot more creative .... and the record companies KNEW it would sell, because THEY TOO adjusted to THE TIMES ... and that was CAPITALISM at its FINEST .... because now the new generations can discover and maybe EMBRACE this fine music today..... PERHAPS ... I know a very young lady (35) who is one of the closest I have to a daughter ..... and she posted LUCKY MAN on her facebook page .... I am really grateful that, in my teens and 20's back then, I got to grow up in the 70's....

"Emerson Lake and Palmer is the most underrated band in the history of the world. They belong in the rock 'n roll Hall of Fame" Oh no, they dont´ deserve to be part of the rock and roll hall of fame. Their music is in another completely different level, the musical conception, the complexity, they are a million light years away from the rest of the musicians. So.. rock and roll hall of fame is for the "local people" earth people.. E.L.P came from another galaxy! .

I don't know why they weren't as popular as they should have been; I guess that more and more people are discovering them as time goes on and appreciating them now in a way that they just didn't for some weird reason back in 1970. I just come back to this piece, again and again, can't get enough of it. It's incredible. It is so much in it, I always find new sounds, new harmonies, new combinations in it. There will never be music like this. RIP Keith and Greg, you made the world rich with your being.

All three of them were musical geniuses way ahead of their time, it’s so sad that we lost both Keith and Greg in 2016! This is a truly beautiful piece, and ELP were masters of their craft!!

Such a cool tune! Love the piano strumming, the jazzy feel, the vocals. Emerson might have been the alpha male of this group, but Greg Lake's voice has always touched me the most in all the years I've listened to them.

ELP was the main reason I was at Cal Jam I -- Greg Lake's voice had a hypnotic effect on me. Still does. Carl Palmer was not given the credit he deserved as a top notch drummer.... And Keith Emerson was often given insufficient acknowledgment for compositions and variations on a theme. Individually each was a stellar talent, together they were breath taking.

Just like the argument over the greatest guitarist, we could go on all day about drummers. And there are many great ones (another of my favorites is Neil Peart). But I still assert that CP is THE greatest. If anyone tried to argue the point, I direct them to Aquatarkus (live) from "Welcome Back My Friends..." Stunning drumming.

Obra Maestra!

I don't get all this "they were underestimated/underrated" garbage I keep reading about ELP. Their classic albums sold by the shed load and they played to millions of people at concerts all over the world for years. There were some incredible bands around during their peak years and they remained in the Premier League along with Led Zep, Deep Purple, Jethro Tull etc. They weren't "underestimated" in my house, I played their records to death and saw them in concert six times. So there!

+popularside percy I'm thinking most people mean underrated by the popular music press publications of the time. ELP were always considered pompous and bombastic. Fuck 'em. Music is about the individual, not Rolling Stone magazine.

+Cal B I would like to add Kansas to the list of underrated, idk if people knew anything else from them than Carry on wayward son and Dust in the wind. They still hold one of the best live albums ever done title for me personally, Two for the show.

Progressive rock did not have the same resurrection as the heavy metal had in its various forms. The neo- prog (Marillion et.al) was short lived and did not produce massive bands such as Iron Maiden or Def Leppard and many hair bands in US.Thus there is the big divide of punk rock and prog is on that side while Zep, Purple were the tradition brought over it into new metal.

I am blessed that I shared a time and space with Greg Lake, Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer. Carl is left from ELP. I have met him and he is a genuine Drummer with a genuine drummer's mind. When I pass along the gallery to the next Picture at the Exhibition, I will enquire whether Greg and Keith are within....if the answer is no, then I will refuse entry politely and go elsewhere.
