A semi-retired professor living in Britain returns to his hometown in Canada for the first time since leaving as a young man. Set to receive an award from the local university, he also attempts to reconcile his past while forming a meaningful relationship with his niece and her daughter who are also facing challenges.
'Emile' is the third in a loose trilogy of films written and directed by Carl Bessai, all exploring aspects of personal identity. The first, 'Johnny', looked at a teenager with his life ahead of them, the second, 'Lola', portrayed a middle-aged woman trying to escape an abusive relationship, and 'Emile' is a Proustian examination of memory, imagination, regret, lost roots, and the possibility of redemption and reconciliation, all seen through the eyes of an old man whose life is almost over.
Director: Carl Bessai
Stars: Ian Mckellen, Deborah Kara Unger
The film received 2 Genie Award nominations in 2005 for Best Achievement in Overall Sound and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for Ian McKellen.
Cast
Ian McKellen as Emile (all ages)
Deborah Kara Unger as adult Nadia and as Nadia's mother
Theo Crane as Maria and as young Nadia
Tygh Runyan as Freddy
Chris William Martin as Carl
Ian Tracey as Tom

Live and learn. Have to forgive ourselves for nothing bc nothing or no one is perfect. We forgive others on the way or should before we go. It is life work. We are spiritual beings having a human experience. The body is but a suit over the soul.

Loved this movie. It certainly stirs the heart. Family's can be the most difficult to love and to forgive. We sometimes expect more from family than they may be able to give, just because we share blood doesn't mean we will love each other or except each other for who we really are. Expectations are premeditated resentments. If we don't communicate what we want or need it is our own fault when we are disappointed or hurt. Bottom line, forgiveness is for us, to let go of pain so we can move forward to a more positive outcome for our lives & journey. We can't fix the past but we can change our future by being better communicators. Love Unconditionally, Light & Peace to All 💜🕊

This was very good movie. I love scenes of him in fields solo. I'm a senior in fields solo. It's not as bad as it looks to younger people. We seniors take care and look out for each other in seniors housing. I was once that little girl in foster care. Now I'm coming to my end. I'm good.

Beautiful movie.I think we can all identify a bit with some of the things in this movie. I myself grew up as an only child with a narcissist mother and a father who was there physically but far away mentally. I also run away like Emile ,but the ghosts of my pass are still there. It's taken me half of my life to forget and forgive. I have tried not to make the same mistakes with my own son, husband, family. With the help of my husband, I have forgiven my parents, especially my mother, but I still haven't forgotten. They are all gone, but their ghost are still with me .Thank you for showing us the movie.

There are so many mental problems in people that were not researched or discussed back then. I have made it a point to identify & recognize & figured it out. I don"t have mental problems, but feel sorry for those that do. I keep my distance to keep them from throwing me under the bus. I learned late, but in my late 70"s, there's no drama. Family members are the worst, so I don't acknowledge them. I pray lots.

A very good movie to watch. Ticles your mind while figuring out whose character you can most relate to. The lesson i got from it is don't let your ugly past make you the loser in the end. And never allow hatred to reign in your heart, catch up with those you left behind and live again. No matter how hard it looks like, we can do it. Jesus will show us how, trust in our Reurrected Lord.

I got somewhat confused about the characters and who the flashbacks were depicting. All I really got was that he was supposed to have taken care of Nadia after her parents had died, which included his brother, Nadia’s father. But he never did, and left her in the orphanage. Both his brothers died, he had never stayed in touch with them when he went away. He comes back in old age to accept an honorary degree in his hometown and stays with Nadia and her daughter. I never got why he cut ties with his brothers, especially the one who really loved him. Nor why he never married. Nor why Nadia’s husband left her (or she left him). A moody film about old memories and regrets of choices made in youth and roads not taken. I liked the music as it fit the movie well.

Education was his passion and he was married to his work. I think the brother he was close to died young, maybe he dealt with the grief by burying himself in his academics and the other one, he had a resentment. He was a bit self absorbed which he regretted and realized in the end that at least a somewhat functional family meant meant something in his last years.

@@wendyjones1422Forgetting is not a requirement. You must protect yourself from inviting a repeat of the same behavior by the person you have chosen to forgive. At the same time, should you choose to keep the offender in your life, you must not constantly remind them of their failure by throwing it in their face over and over again. That is not how forgiveness works. Sometimes , you must move on with your life leaving the other person, or persons, behind.

To give an honorary speech at an older age, and to have the dead ghosts of your past present on the audience, it is the most difficult speech ever given. In between memories, flashbacks and guilty feelings words and time seem shadow-like, and confusing. Your film is dramatic but most humans do age under similar circumstances. Most of the viewers can relate to memories, family and shadows from our past.

I´d like to comment: sometimes things mark our lives and we can´t deal with them the right way; nor can we do it at the right time. This hunts our lives. I like the sweetness the eldery shows the gitl; how she hugs the bear in her sleep, how he smiles at her and gets her to desire to go out and reach out ... life may be very hard, but love is stronger!

The family you were born into are blessings, and most of them are lessons that you agreed too when entering this world. When you learn the lessons in life from every human you counteract with and interact with it's all a win-win but if you shut yourself out without forgiveness (yourself+them) then you just have to keep repeating the lessons, over, and over, and over, Einstein said the definition of insanity is repeating the same thing over and over expecting different results 🤦 SO good luck everybody learn to heal love and trust is the name of the game to get off the karmic hamster wheel..🥰

Every soul has its being to be free to love and to live as the spirit wills... LOVE is a Force that can never be coerced.. Sentimental is the journey of detachment....

Wow if you enjoy a film full of drama dragged out with no action .. no peaks of happiness but instead quite sad all the way through.. then this is a film for you . I highly recommend you find this film at a library old dvd rental shop maybe at a charity shop.... as this one is full of paid advertisements interupting all the way through.. weve been "youtubed" 😅😅😅😅
