What an original plot! I've never heard of anything even close, story wise, sounds like such a gamble and glad it paid off

I was blown away by this movie. This is a great review, and I agree with the 4 1/2 star rating, although I would have given it 4 3/4 or even 5 stars. It's refreshing to see a piece of art like this. It really felt like the planets had to align to put together a film this impactful. It's an amalgam of very solid acting, directing, music, choreography, and cinematography. It's incredibly rare and original. By far, the best movie of 2024.

It sounds like a really amazing representation of the spectrum of humanity. Someone once said we often misuse the term "humanity" by interpreting it only to mean "good"--which ignores the other aspects of being human.

I love Zoe Saldana, and I'm loving Selena Gomez in Only Murders in the Building! Excited for this one! I've been looking forward to this ever since your pull quote from Joker!

I saw this film at tiff and I totally love it. All of the elements on paper seem to not work but it does remarkably well. I especially loved Saldana's performance and would love to see her get a Supporting Actress win at the Oscars (even though she and Gascon are co-leads but such is the campaign).

I'm a strait dude and I was moved several times by this film; at their core the themes are universal. Even if it wasn't a musical the premise and performances were excellent and would have held up. It's also really cool to see Spanish speaking American actors performing in their native language.

I'm late to the reviews this week, but wow, i can't wait to see this. Usually, musicals can go either way, but this sounds like a winner. Thank you.

From the UK; I watched yesterday afternoon - I love this film. I’m not a great modern musical fan but I enjoyed the film from the start. I thought all the main actors were amazing especially Karla Sofia Gascon; I hope she wins more awards. I thought that this was the best role that I have seen Zoe play; dancing and singing - I was very impressed. I will try and watch again in the cinema and on Netflix 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

The depiction of Mexico isnt bad. As a Mexican i am not mad at it. The acting itself is good. The story is at least interesting, what gets me is having Zoe be Dominican and no very clearly indicate that she is and is now living in Mexico and working there as a lawyer and it isnt dawning on anyone that is what is happening. There are black people in mexico she could have played a true mexican, by getting the accent right , but i feel like this movie did not make the efford to cast any mexicans as the main characters or give the actors the time to sound and feel mexican. Selena is supposed to be a mexican american women that still cannot speak spanish fluently even after living in mexico for years, just give the girl more time to get it right. The lady playing Epifania is the only mexican actress in the cast and she does an amazing job. I think from the mexican audience she is the only that makes sense in this story. Everything else feels fake. Like a soap opera by way France. The other issue i have with it is that the main character is one of the most violent man turn trans women. The trans part is not the issue, the issue is that i am supposed to believe that a men that has inflicted so much violence and death and was probably one creating many of the death and missing of my country has a sudden chance of heart and now wants to help people find their missing death. The story just didnt give me enough to belive the change. Just didnt.

I see what you're saying and I think all of ur criticism is valid. For me, the part of the movie where Rita is convincing the dr to operate on Emilia and perform her sex operation is where the movie tells us the thesis. Rita's argument is: if u help change society then society allows for each individual to grow, and thus causing a domino effect repeating itself. Basically Emilia being able to live the life she never got to live allows her to make choices she would have never thought to take. I guess, I'm more forgiving because to me this movie was supposed to be very theatrical and fantastical, as if it was a fantasy story. My suspension of disbelief really helped me enjoy the movie. Especially being Latino and both of my parents being Mexican I also agree with u that it was very soapy and to me that was very nostalgic and saw it as a cool homage more than a qualm. I do agree they should have casted Mexican actors because Selena's accent was getting to me lol

I just watched this movie and loved it, Zoe was so good, singing, acting, speaking in Spabish. J-lo could never! The only thing is that I wished they would have given Selena’s role to a Mexican actress from Mexico, who actually speaks Spanish.

I walked into this movie at a film festival with zero idea what it was about - so bizarre - like a transgender musical version of no country for old men. I’m amazed how great of a reception it’s getting because it’s such a huge risk and swing for the filmmakers

Saw it last night, it felt like a rich text but I gotta admit I didn’t understand the meaning… is Emilia a metaphor for Mexico? Wish there was more examination of the morality of Emilia getting to start a new life and escape her evil deeds (was there? Maybe I didn’t understand it). The first 30 minutes is phenomenal

One of the reasons I have an issue with organized religion is you have to ignore common sense and critical thinking to be an obedient follower. In Christianity, you must believe in the Trinity, miracles, Jesus getting resurrected, and all other types of magical thinking. That's a perfect setup to be victimized. You're conditioned into ignoring your gut instincts and provable facts. Religious leaders are placed on a very high pedestal and considered anointed by a perfect God so how dare anyone question their intentions and acts? You're supposed to have faith and trust that God will fix things and protect you when you should be acknowledging the power within yourself and notify the cops. I don't mean to offend anyone. I just believe we shouldn't consider anyone or entity as all good and all-knowing. It creates vulnerability, IMHO.
