They got the "Obrigado/a" (thank you in Portuguese) BACKWARDS, actually. The gender (and thus the "o" or "a" at the end) depends on WHO IS SPEAKING, ... NOT who you are speaking to). It is close to the formal English "much obliged" meaning I am obliged to you, or "thank you". So, you can see here that the "I' who feels "obliged" is the person speaking. Thus if a woman says it, she says "obrigada", A man always says "obrigado" ... independent of whom they are speaking TO. - They obviously did not know this.
