What is liberal education? How is it different from professional or practical education? What does it set out to do and how does it form us?
To help uncover some of the distinctive features of liberal arts and great books programs, watch the seventh Ramsay Lecture for 2023: a panel discussion with three leading liberal arts educators from Australia and the US titled ‘A Reflection on Liberal Education.’
The panel comprises Ramsay Centre CEO Professor Simon Haines and Ramsay Academic Consultant (and Campion College Director) Dr Stephen McInerney in conversation with special guest Dr Emily Langston, who until recently was the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs at St John's College in Annapolis, Maryland, where she has been a member of the faculty since 1995. The conversation provides a focus on the pedagogical model delivered at St John’s College, Annapolis, one of the world’s most famous Great Books colleges, where fundamental texts and a core curriculum offer a unique model of self-formation.

@56:20 Yes, still very much in its infancy, with a smaller population than elsewhere. ACES has about 400 followers on Facebook, as an indication, with members and friends involved in several primary and secondary Classical and/or Liberal Arts inspired schools. In terms of getting into action, though, a lot has been achieved in the few years that I've been at all involved in Classical Ed' in Australia. It's great to see so many different groups approaching this important renewal on so many different fronts, from Ramsay to Classical Conversations, ACES and individual podcasts, Professional Development opportunities and book clubs!

FYI - Campion College in Sydney is a liberal/arts tertiary institution and late July about 70 parents. teachers and academics met to discuss the move to establish schools around Australia to dedicated to a classical education. This was the second conference as more and more people are starting small fires around Australia. A group of teachers have also established the Australian Classical Education Society to promote the cause. There are classical schools established or being planned in Perth, Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and as well as Wagga. I should add, while there are similarities, a classical education is a not a liberal education. They are two distinct forms of education.
