I wonder if in her mind, having that system does make it pretty easy so she thinks it wouldn't be that impressive. But to most people, that doesn't really sound like it would make it that much easier and can even just add another layer of complexity if your brain isn't good at translating those kinds of concepts back and forth.

Yeah, it's like someone breaking down a backflip, sure you understand the parts of it, but then you jump in the air and do a backflip. However you pull that off is incredible. I think her dad was very impressed. While he wasn't exactly gushing and he didn't give her 'genius' at the end he was very humble in her accomplishment and recalled that story of him finding her gifted as a young child.

My parents wouldn't ever call me smart either, for fear of my ego ruining me, or because of accuracy like her dad saying memorization doesn't necessarily corelate to IQ. My brother memorized digits of pi for extra credit because he struggled in math, but he did it through rote memorization. I did practice the tricks for quick mental math though. I've read about the visual memorization technique, but never used it, and failed Fraternity tests that it could've helped with.

I mean she has a photographic memory. It's not really impressive in terms of it's not a skill but something she was born with. Obviosuly people are going to take this to mean I'm talking trash or being negative, but I'm just pointing out that this is very typical for those with a photographic memory. In the same way dunking a basketball is very typical for a 7 ft person.
@ufva8029

@@ufva8029 My point is that learned skills are more impressive than genetic traits aka a 5 ft person dunking a basketball is much more impressive than a 7 ft person
@Quartzilla
@Quartzilla 14 күн бұрын
@@charismatic9467 But it was a learned skill---she didn't just start stream and recite the digits right away, she had to make use of a technique she'd read about, and she spent a lot of time (over 10 hours IIRC) perfecting that technique, getting progressively better as she kept trying. That's learning! Even if you assume that this was only possible because of some rare genetic talent she has (and I doubt that is the case---I reckon most people could do this if they put in a similar amount of effort), that doesn't change the fact that she had to learn something to turn that potential into an actual accomplishment.

if you listen to her process, its not photographic. its narrative memory. she compresses and then reconstructs the image rather than storing it and accessing it directly.

she said she visualizes it but that seems to have been mispoken. what she describes is a process where she compresses the digits into a story of characters, and then plays the story back as digits are needed. this would be something like "narrative memory"

@@kuya5k Exactly. The fact that he kept asking questions and wanted to better understand her thought process shows how interested/caring he is. He was genuinely interested in understanding how her mind works, and was impressed because it was such an unusual way to perceive the world. People can say "you did a good job" etc without actually saying those words. Their interest and enthusiasm IS their support.
