Since the outer of the 4 cords (square knot) are used more, you can make them longer and the two inner cords shorter. I am trying that now on a new tree of life project. My neighbor bought one of my tree of life macramé wall hangings and then ordered one for her daughter in law. The next week she ordered 3 more for Christmas gifts. I have given away lots too. My daughter bought me a tree of life necklace- I love it. I hung a small owl over the top and even have a Kokopelli Indian hanging at the bottom. I love owls and native American thoughts.

The 26 pieces would be 98 inches long each (=8.1 feet), according to my conversion table. You need a total of 213 feet (65 metres) in total for the project. If you buy a tape measure with inches on one side and cm on the other it's a great help and avoids having to look at conversion tables. Good luck, it's a really fun and easy project.

My only addition after trying this as my first ever makrame - when you get to 7+ half knots - turn over your piece, that way you avoid it getting more and more difficult to get pretty knots. Repeat every 7 ish knots. Especially for that 22(?) knot one, this is my best tip

very easy to follow. I must have had a smaller loom so my tree trunk turned out a little bit too short. I just went back and shortened the branches a bit. Then on another loom and it was a bit larger so I lengthen the amount of cord and came out a bit short on some. Now I have learned how to lengthen the cords. I have already made 3 macrame tree of life dream catchers. I gave 2 to friends and mine is hanging on my night lamp and I attached an owl pendant to hang in there with it. Thank you, Emily

I had to go up to a 14-inch (35.5 cm) hoop to make the 3mm cord work, and it worked better for me to set up so the inner cords on each section only had 1/3 of the length. All that aside, the video was easy to follow ( thanks for leaving the instructions on the screen!) I was able to finish it on my second try (had to take it out to switch to the larger hoop), it took less than half a day of work, and it looks great! I’m going to give it to my mom for Mother’s Day. Thank you!
@riverrat9395 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment about having to reduce the length of the inner cords by 1/3. After tying sections 4 - 8 together, I did not have enough inner-cord length to tie all of the cords together to finish, and the cords were definitely not long enough to tie to the frame and to tie the square knots. The cords in the video look to be of similar length when tying them to the frame, although I did not find that to be the case. I am now in the process of re-tying this hanging and feel it will come out better now. I do know about swapping inner and outer cords so the lengths are similar, but I could not swap them so that they looked right.

If you are using knitting yarn instead of macrame cord should you double all knots?
@EmilyCouldMakeThat4 жыл бұрын
Hey there, depending on the diameter of the yarn in will vary, maybe needing more than double. It would be hard to tell without making it myself first but you could just continue to tie knots until the length of the branches looks similar to the one I made in the video.
@megt40554 жыл бұрын
@@EmilyCouldMakeThat Thanks Emily. I did one on a 25 cm hoop, and I followed your directions and it was perfect. The second one I did on a wreath hoop and I used your directions as a guide and I did have to double all knots.

Hello, Thank you for making such an easy to follow tutorial, I have made two of these and have run into the same issue twice...the branches seem way to long to connect at the middle to make the final trunk. I counted and recounted the half knots and ultimately had to reduce the number of half knots used. Has anyone else mentioned this to you, what am i doing wrong...
@EmilyCouldMakeThat4 жыл бұрын
Hi there, I haven't had any problems with this before - This may happen if the hoop size is smaller or the cord being used is thicker than the recommended 3mm :)

Great tutorial! What size ring would you use for 4 mm? I tried the 10 inch and it was way to small. Thanks !
@EmilyCouldMakeThat3 жыл бұрын
I'm not too sure - it would probably be better to go on the bigger side, maybe try 13-14 inches? That way if it's a little big you can just tie some more knots in the trunk to make the trunk longer.

Have you run out of cord after you've tie all the branches? If so, I would tie the ends into the trunk just like the video, but then trim the ends at the bottom of the trunk if they aren't long enough to reach the hoop. Hope this makes sense! This will also mean that you wont have the correct number of threads to tie all of the square knots at the end, but you could leave a single cord hanging at each end and I'm sure it would look fine :) Hope this makes sense!
@elizadeis95904 жыл бұрын
