Geek Girl was a Bit too QUIRKY…. 🤪

I watched Geek Girl and it was blast from the past. I felt like I was in 2010 when every teen book became a movie. This show felt like it was supposed to come out 14 years ago and instead of updating it for a modern audience they just used the original script.

I find it so funny how often when authors make their main character in teen books clumsy and socially awkward to make them different they come across and neurodivergent. Geek girl is an example of a main character who is actually neurodivergent (autistic and dyspraxic). This is a topic that is very interesting to me and I could go on about it for ages.

They needed to go into more depth with that in the show because I would have never poked fun at the fact she was playing with the hat, but like they just made it seem like she was quirky which is so reductive

@@EmilyFitzGeraldYT some people find it more authentic or better representation if they don’t label it as autism but I personally believe it was really important to label it clearly. That’s just a personal thing as an autistic person tho. I’ve seen so many people make fun of Harriet and it’s truly interesting to see how people think of Harriet not knowing she autistic. (I’m not saying you are making fun of her some people are quite nasty) That hat incident made me cringe so absolutely hard my brain the whole time was girly what are you doing what is your thought process.

I really wish they'd properly confirmed on the show that she was meant to be autistic, because the way she's written she kind of DOES just seem like your average quirky neurodivergent coded character who isn't really anything new. Most of the reviews of the show I've seen don't even seem to be aware that Harriet's autistic. And I think it would have been so much more of a refreshing spin on the tropes if it had been made clearer (like with Quinni in Heartbreak High for example).

I loved these books in my preteen and early teen years (11-15) and watching the show as an adult is interesting. The books were more realistic because there was more buildup and Harriet wasn't an overnight sensation. Also Lexi was called Alexa in the books, idk why it was changed. One thing I liked about this show is I got MAJOR early-mid 2010s vibes which was so nostalgic for me lol

Yes, and it was Olivia and that other girl in the books not Olly and Liv! And they changed the storyline so much, like Poppy wasn't even with Nick!!

The plot of the show is very unbelievable but the representation of Harriet's autism is the one thing that is realistic, partly because she doesn't know that she's autistic. She doesn't present stereotypically, so I find it likely she would indeed not have a diagnosis yet at 16. The way you interpret her social challenges here is also very much the point as to why women who mask may not be taken seriously. 'You seem to be saying fairly normal things, it doesn't make sense that you're overwhelmed and confused. What's wrong with you?' I'm not saying there was ill intent from your commentary but there is just such a general lack of awareness what autism actually is (I did not know either before it was suggested I could be autistic when I was 27.) Knowing now, this was fairly obvious in the show, and what made it different from the somewhat cringey teenage portrayals of some early 2010 media. It might have neen nice to have some mildly believable plot as well.

Yep, I totally agree with that comment. I felt compelled to say something here about the quite judgemental way this video speaks about the character without really understanding that Harriet presents as an autistic girl who is undiagnosed. Although the plot was a bit far fetched, the character portrayal was really realistic and could speak powerfully to people who understand autism in girls and women.

the heck is "reversed osmosis" water 😂 do they just take the water, send it through a semipermeable membrane, and then reverse it? except it untravels through it? so they "un osmosis" the water (i take biology) 😭i think the point of that line was also to make Poppy seem kind of... how do i put it... less bright? as well as annoying. i actually enjoyed the show, i grew up reading the books so it was kind of comforting for me. also (off topic but) your eyes are such a nice shade of green!

I looked it up because I was curious what it meant too! The reason it’s “reverse” is because rather than the water naturally migrating to the less water-dense area, it’s forced through the membrane with a mechanical pressure, leaving the minerals/contaminants behind. :•) And yeah like Emily said literally Dasani uses it LMAOOOO

I ended up watching more of the show and they actually do talk about the fact that she’s neurodivergent in a very subtle way. And see my issue with only watching the first episode is I was not made aware of that info and I feel like it would’ve made a huge difference on my commentary. A lot of these books movies during this time kind of have a similar character where they’re just really clumsy and it’s meant to be quirky and not as a representation of someone on the spectrum. But this one is different and such I would’ve examined her character differently
