Correct on the nod to Sound of Silence, but I interpret the Sound of Silence a little differently. That song, to me, represents society's inability to foster effective communication. It is not limited to the '60s, but is just as applicable today. This, interesting enough, can also be a double entendre to Em's music and society. Em feels like people don't fully grasp the deep meanings within his music, but instead takes them at face value. This has devolved the rap industry to just making noise instead of communicating a message ("people talking without speaking"). On a societal level, failure to communicate and be heard can have devastating consequences from mental health to legislative failure at passing wide sweeping reformative legislation.

I really love how in the beginning, you can sympathize with the character he's portraying. It forces you to realize that these people who mass murder are just as human as us, and that is a scary thought. It could be your neighbor, it could be your nephews best friend in high school, it could be your lawyer. Everyone has the potential to snap, but mental health isn't taken very seriously in America. If enough people really cared, perhaps it could change. I'm not defending anyone who does these horrible horrible things, by the way. I just find that making these people out to be monsters, less than human is more harmful than accepting that humans can be like this. If you recognize this, you can try to help prevent it more. Idk i'm kinda rambling now.

No these are monsters. I don't sympathize with them. Mental illness or no, you're a grown ass adult and you know its wrong. And instead of seeking help, coming out saying they are wanting to do things like this they go through with it. Inexcusable. Even if they weren't monsters before, they certainly were after they did it. Not just any kind of human is capable of this. Only certain kinds. Mental illness is a problem and should be addressed. But I don't sympathize with killers under any circumstances and they should not be shown any ounce of leniency. Crazy or not.
