The second verse of Stay Wide Awake is one of the most technically impressive rap verses. He rhymes almost every single word while continuing to paint a vivid, horrific, serial killer picture in your head. When I listen to that song, I don’t listen for “enjoyment”, I approach it as if I’m watching a horror movie.
@HiphopFaded

I’m happy more people recognize that. The flow is absolutely bonkers. One of the greatest flows I’ve ever heard imo.
@DictateTempo

The thing that makes it even more impressive is he's rhyming 13-15 syllable at a time during that second verse. The accent obviously helped to bend the words, but it's such a technically impressive track, especially with the flow pattern he went with. An Eminem classic for sure. Relapse is just packed with multis, Em said he was learning how to write again after his overdose, so I'm not surprise he went all in on his rhyming.

That entire track is one of the best there is in terms of rhyming. That second verse it's not just the words that rhyme, but the entire sentences.
@paris-1911
@paris-1911 Жыл бұрын
I have to disagree. Though the rhyming pattern and melody he sets up in the verse is definitely impressive, I think the words he chooses hold it back a bit. I think Tyler the Creator might’ve been a little exaggerated when he said it wasn’t ever topped. I mean, of the fourteen lines that follow the scheme he punctuates the final words and internal rhymes with the same words: “me,” and “see.” Eight times at the start of the line, five times on the first internal, and four times on the end. Lyrically? It’s not _that_ great or complex, it’s mostly what surrounds it that amps it up - which, honestly is what rap is all about. Not to take away from the verse, I just don’t think it’s one of the best of all time. I think other Em verses have topped it easily, but still a real solid one on its own. Certainly not easy for most rappers to pen, that’s for sure.

This album took round 10 years to grow on people, and now it has sort of a cult classic status. I think it'll grow on you more with more listens to be on par with SSLP. But you missed the two deluxe tracks. I would strongly recommend giving My Darling a listen. Its the most surreal, unnerving, and genuinely scary Eminem song, and in an unexpectedly different way than the rest of the album. Would love to see a reaction just to that song!

@Matt It’s a unique track for sure, not every song is go na be like it. But Same Song and Dance, Deja Vu, Stay Wide Awake are all Em in top form. but the thing about this album is it’s one of his most consistent tracklists. zero bad songs. also features his best production ever, his best rhyming ever, and is the closest thing he has to an actual concept album. Relapse is one of the best Eminem albums Edit: not to mention his best album in terms of hooks as well lmao

This album surprisingly improved over time, I will even go to say this is Em's 4th best album after SSLP, MMLP, and The Eminem Show. Lyrically and sonically this album was great it's just Em went heavy with the different accents across all songs which most people found irritating at the time of release. Even Em himself said he overdone it with the corny voices but I enjoyed the album. Much better than Encore for sure!

This album takes you out of your own body and into a that dark head space and uncomfortable, almost nightmarish, persona with him then throws you right back into reality when Deja Vu hits. Relapse has always been one of my fave em albums, definitely a cult classic. Lots of people hate it, but those of us who love it REALLY love it. People sh*tted on it cause of the accents but imo, it's some of his most gritty and best stuff. Not bar heavy like his newer stuff but his flow and schemes on some of these tracks are legendary. And I love it even more after suffering through substance abuse as I can relate to it now due to my life experiences. He was going through withdrawals and watching alot of serial killer documentaries at the time hence the fcked up subject matter

Yeah this album it's way better than Encore, people either love it or hate it, this it's probably his most complex lyrically album in terms of rhymes, maybe beaten by "Music to Be Murdered By", but even tho I'm not like a fan of EVERY song still it's hella entertaining to listen. For example you have "3 a.m." a great introduction to the horror, ridiculous songs like "We Made You", "Stay Wide Awake" has videos on YT that show all the crazy rhyme schemes, he rhymes entire sentences, and songs like "Deja Vu" and "Beautiful" are master pieces, and I love "Underground", it's aggressive and full with energy. The next album it's "Recovery", and that album it's great, interested to see your reaction to it.

I think sonically and content-wise its not his best, and the accents are annoying to me, but i still recognize the point of them and how they allowed him to create unique rhymes and flows by pronouncing words in a weird way. It's crazy how the content of this is so unbelievably disturbing but it's one of my favourite albums of all time. It was the first CD I bought when I was 9 years old and I definitely shouldn't have been exposed to this from such a young age but as I've gotten older it's become such a crazy album for my life. It's truly a horror movie inside of an album, in one sense it's capturing the mind of a twisted serial killer that was built through Em's research and enjoyment or documentaries and cases at the time, but in another sense it's a cautionary tale of his struggles with drug abuse and the darkest areas of the human mind. To this day I still can't get my head around how somebody sat down and made this project but it never fails to amaze me upon each revisit.

The Accents don’t put me off either, they enhance the experience for me. I want to see Eminem experiment like this a bit more personally (no that doesn’t mean I want Relapse 2, it just means I want to see him try new things more often). Hearing both sides of MTBMB, it seems like that’s what he will hopefully be doing in the future.

Clearly our opinions aren’t the same. To be perfectly honest, this is my opinion on TES. I think if you removed songs like Drips and My Dads Gone Crazy, I’d enjoy it arguably more than the MMLP. As for the the SSLP, I thinks it’s overrated, the production isn’t impressive to me at all (I actually dislike the majority of it), and the rapping pales in comparison to his later work (especially this album). Personally, I look at Relapse as the better SSLP. I know many would disagree with that, but I don’t blindly follow crowds. I feel my own feelings, think my own thoughts, and in conclusion, my Eminem opinions are very different from everyone else’s.

Also the beat to same song and dance is a sample of "one" by Metallica with the pitch changed. Probably why it sounds so firmiliar and sinister

Crazy album, Eminem is able to really convey what a relapse feels like, the actions one would take. It's a very interesting and dark album to me, doubly so considering the direction his music went in the years after. Unrelated, but have you heard or considered listening to the album Luv 4 Rent by Smino? Regardless if you deem the album good enough for a reaction, it's been my favorite album this year to put on in the background, and Smino has a very unique style of Rap/R&B that is absolute ear candy if you've never heard his work before.

the rhyme scheme on stay wide awake is absolutely insane. think you should listen to artsy music with more of a how hes doing it attitude then taking every word at face value

Relapse and recovery are outstanding albums, i don't put them any higher than his other albums as imo they're all top tier but these two albums both had a big impact on me so i developed a real appreciation for every single aspect of the albums. The lyricism, techniques, the beats, all of it. Having my own personal issues at the times they was released allowed me to be able to relate to both on a deep level! Amazing artistic ablity.

I'm sorry but your completely wrong Jon. Beautiful is by far the best song on the album. this album is not about crazy lyrics or wordplay it's about the message, and that is what Beautiful is. It's my favorite song of Em after mockingbird

This is Eminem’s most lyrical album his rapping on this is amazing Nobody could replicate this Eminem it’s insane how he bends his words For me this is an album that all rappers hold to high regard because if you look at it from the perspective of creativeity and skill it’s 10/10

Crack a bottle wasn't going to be on the album until it leaked online. It then went on to win a Grammy for best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.

'We Made You' was actually the first full Eminem song I listened to. Had only heard his classic song choruses. It definitely doesn't compare to his classics, but it kinda has a nostalgic spot in my heart.

If anyone see this, here's a concept album playlist I did a few years back for Relapse. Perhaps it's just coincidence, but many of these tracks are connected or reference one another. Feel free to add in Beautiful after Deja Vu. 1. Hell breaks Loose 2. Music Box. 3. Hello 4. Tonya (skit) 5. Same Song & Dance 6. Bufallo Bill 7. Must Be the Ganja 8. Stay Wide Awake 9. Dr. West (skit) 10. 3 a.m. 11. My Darling 12. Mr. Mathers (skit) 13. Deja Vu 14. Be Careful What You Wish For 15. Steve Berman (skit) 16. Underground
