Eminem has just released his album REVIVAL. After many years of criticism for his stop/start flow and his rock/pop influenced song-set from albums like R3LAPSE & RECOVERY. After my initial Reaction/Review/HotTake of the album I've now listened to it 5 times and am ready for my FINAL verdict.

I've seen a few people argue that Eminem intentionally made Revival without a main theme, that he wanted it to have several facets of himself. Here's the thing: just because you INTEND something, doesn't make the RESULT good. For example, I can go study for a math test INTENDING to get an A+, that doesn't mean it'll RESULT in an A+. I'm not saying having an album with no theme is bad, it's just that he didn't execute it well

The thing that most people don't understand is that Revival isn't supposed to be an album to turn up to... It's a storytelling album for his fans and for the people he's hurt throughout his life. People nowadays are so used to be fed party songs and mumble (c)rap that they just can't sit down and listen to the lyrics. Eminem did not release this album to please everyone... he released it to tell a story and based on that premise it's a success. No, it's not his best album ever, but it's his most complete work from track 1 to track 19 everything comes together as he wraps up with Castle and Arose. I personnally love this album, because Eminem got real and he finally admitted that Kim did not deserve to be humiliated so much.

Simon Tupper no one has a problem with that, our issue is that it just doesn't sound good, the fact that the album tells a story doesnt make it good. However, there are exemples of artists who did this succesfully such as kendrick on GKMC. He tells a great story but doesn't sacrifice the quality of the music itself. Thats just my point of view

I like Kendrick a lot, but (not to trash him or anything) he doesn't have much to talk about in term of personal experiences. Kendrick is a better person overall and he'll probably never feel the need to write an album to try to right his wrongs. Everybody knows Eminem will most likely do another album with Dr. Dre and then call it quits. I'm not a huge fan of Rick Rubin, but I'm not ready to say Eminem cannot come back stronger. Rick Rubin is terrible when it comes to making a great beat and I hope Eminem will part ways with him.

This album had 5 great tracks in my opinion (which is average for Eminem), 2 of which are just goddamn amazing (Arose and Castle), but ultimately, what fails this album are the bad songs.. they're just reeaaaaaly bad. 6/10 from me.

I love you Shawn, but I have to disagree with a few things like what you said about him talking about Kim in 2017. Like no, this is music, this is how he vents. It's his only way. Ik how it feels to love someone and have that regret for sooooo long. He IS gonna make a full song on how he feels about certain topics because that's his way of getting things off his chest. The main issue is we as Eminem fans only see this:Classic or nothing. If it isn't completely amazing and life changing an Eminem project is disregarded. It's still good just slightly underwhelming, and its respectable after having almost 5 years off (bearing in mind i've only listened to it three times. I actually really liked Revival. I thought it was just a slightly worse version of MMLP2. The Rick Rubin tracks on Revival were significantly worse on Revival to those on MMLP2 though I will say that. My only dissapointment was that I thought Eminem would be more creative and focused on this album than he has ever been before. However as you discuss in the video, he was in fact less creative and focused than he has ever been before. That said I still prefer this to Encore, and currently prefer it to Relapse and Slim Shady LP in terms of what I listen to more.

My main problem with the album- rick ribun. -songs i don't like: chloraceptic, heat, the one with pink. I've been listening to the album since it came out and i can't give my final thoughts on till after 1 week of relase and to be fair, it actually gets better the more i listen to it, when i first heard it i hated it but now I'm at a 6/10(slightly above average). But i understand that Eminem has already proven everything he needed to prove and now anthing he make is just for fun imo, so i don't really get mad at him when he's corny. I agree Rick Rubin needs to stay away from Em. He said Dre was taking a break while he was doing this album and only got him to come in for some mixing. (Even though he was listed as executive producer, he didn't). Em did say there are 2 songs that he did with Dre that he will revisit. He said that the album had a little something for everyone. So he was trying to reach too many people IMO. Thats why it was all over the place...no theme to it. I have listened to Em since he came out. I haven't had a problem with him changing from his hardcore stuff to a more introspective self. I like his pop features but definitely not the rock songs. Once you reach the top what else can you rap about? I can't say it was garbage because I do like some of the songs. Last thought, I believe they (Interscope) forced this out there because Rosenberg is moving to Def Jam. I think Em's going to probably do a feature here and there on songs/soundtracks but is going to concentrate on his new artists signed to Shady like Boogie. Lets get honest this album was terrible. I agree hundred on things being forced. Rick Rubin is a not a good hip hop producer and someone else should have stepped in on this album. The mix of pop music and then just moving unevenly into Eminem rapping about random shit with some random filler bars that fucks up the whole point he was setting it's just bad. It lacks a lot of focus, this is not a mature album at all and its just not good, I hate the production. The production and the lack of focus on the album is really unsettling and really ruins it for me. Album had clunky production, not poor writing but writing without focus cause Em is a lyricist no doubt, and man again the production is trash and the appeal with all of these pop tracks needs to stop, your hip hop stick with it I wish Dre would have come out of the shadows to produce this joint it really needed him. Lets not get into the corniness of Em with politics I already have J cole on a track called "come through and chill" talking about Trump. It's a over talked about subject. We also have all these corny love stories. Em comes across as unauthentic to me and when you from some funny bars to talking about politics and how much you hate trump over and over again it gets annoying. There's hope Em can leave on a bad note but I don't think he'll do that he needs to comeback with something better if he doesn't I'll be disappointed but not angry there's lots of work he's already given us that has given him that reputation in the hop-hop community. I've never been the one to relate to his lyrics never thought about killing my mom, or my family, and definitely not the weird grimey bars he throws out. Overall this was a Teenage Emotions/10 for me. p.s. In a interview, eminem said that he made the album to satisfy all of his fans. Ever since 8 Mile/Recovery, his fanbase grew larger and changed, so, there are people who likes his slim shady side, but don't like his personal side/rapper side, and there are people that don't like his slim shady side, but like his personal side/rapper side. I think that's why people don't like this new album in general, there are some musics that are good for some people and bad for others. And I think that's why the album is called revival too, because it revives some concepts that he explored after the OD incident (maybe even before). The major flaw with the album is the concept that is selled, treating this as a very strong political album, when it's not.

At least he still had shit on that album to talk about like on yellow brick road and toy soldiers.

as a massive Eminem fan i feel so disappointed after listening to his new album. It ain't terrible, just very disappionting, the lyrics feel forced and more of the same, and the beats are so forgetable. damnt it i wanna cry, i was so hyped about this :( pd: btw i agree with everything you said bro, nice video.

Think it was more like a 6.5 out of 10. I don't think it was bad, just not nearly his best. In my opinion, better than Encore, so not his worst.

Nate Anderson i agree and for me i don't think thank eminem intends to make the album his best cuz he just can't, he has already proven everything he needed to prove in the past and now anything he puts out is mainly for fun. Ps mmlp2 was his best album if I'm being biased
