"embarrassed that their parents still listen to Elvis." What he means is that Elvis used to be considered controversial, and the people who listened to it at the time were rebellious youths. But to the early 2000's rebellious youths, there's nothing controversial about Elvis anymore. It's just something their parents listen to. So they're waiting for a new rebel to shock the system and push the envelope further. Enter Eminem.

Hi! I’m not sure how familiar you are with the timeline of the different stages and albums of Em’s career and I thought that it could be useful to check the release year of a certain song before reacting to it, that could be beneficial. This idea came to me when you asked why people would rather see Slim than Marshall, well during this stage of Em Slim was probably the biggest reason why Em was so dominant because the idea of a potty mouth and brutally honest alter ego was so ground breaking. So I decided to do a quick recap if you’re interested: The Slim Shady LP, 1999 The Marshall Mathers LP, 2000 (Stan, The Way I Am) The Eminem Show, 2002 (Without Me, Til I Collapse, My Dad’s Gone Crazy) This is widely considered as the golden age of Eminem. Bleached hair and the introduction of Slim Shady (ofc he had more MM styled songs too) made him by far the most dominant rapper in the world, possibly ever according to many. People call his three album ”threepeat” something no rapper has ever done, put out 3 back to back albums at this high level. At this point Slim was an alter ego which symbolized Em’s crazy humor, violent thoughts and someone who had no filter of what he’s saying. Encore, 2004 (Mockingbird, Like Toy Soldiers) this is where things started to change and the Slim Shady persona started to get out of hand. During 2002, when Em was writing and recording The Eminem Show and shooting 8 mile, his days were so crammed that he started taking sleeping medication. During 2003-2005 Em started getting more and more into rap beefs which started turning violent and his drug addiction got out of hands. Encore has some amazing songs but also songs that were not up to standard as Em was on heavy drugs while making most of the songs according to himself. This was the ending point of the first chapter of Em, when he announced his hiatus to check himself into rehab ad almost died from overdose. Relapse, 2009. (Deja Vu, Beautiful) This was the second coming of Em, where the album name was not about Em relapsing into drugs but relapsing into making rap again. He returned without the blonde hair and started a new chapter. This album was about the former king of rap returning to the game to recover his crown after his absence. Recovery, 2010 (Love The Way You Lie, Not Afraid) this album was kinda inspired by his past hardships and had motivation as a running theme on the album The Marshall Mathers LP 2, 2013 (Rap God, Bad Guy) during this era Em dyed his hair blonde again and ”returned back to basics” and made a sequel to the MMLP which is still considered widely as his best album. For example the second part of Stan. Revival, 2017 (Walk on Water, Castle, Arose) during this album Em wanted to show his mature side and vulnerability, showing his change and thus making more emotional and softer songs. This album got bad ratings and reviews as people only expect crazy bars and dissing from Em, which is ironic considering before this album people complained about how he should mature his content as he’s not in his 20’s anymore. Kamikaze, 2018 (Not Alike) this was a follow up to the reception his previous album got. Em decided to wake Slim Shady up from his slumber and long absence to just go full mayhem and rip apart critics, other rappers who had taken shots at him (MGK for example) and provided some insane technical abilities. Em kinda learned to utilize Slim without the negative aspects like alcohol and drugs. Music to be Murdered By, 2020 (Godzilla, Alfred’s Theme, Gnat) Em’s latest album inspired by Alfred Hitchcock. It has a running theme of murder as well as his thoughts about how people don’t appreciate longevity and artists who stay at the top for 20 years like himself or Jay Z and are quick to push the new upcoming darlings, but Em still outclasses 95% of the rappers even if he is almost 50 years old and ”not in his prime” anymore as people claim. Hope this recap helps out a bit and sorry for the typos

FYI , and . (< and >) is frame by frame and forward arrow and back arrow are five seconds forward or backward (along with some other shortcuts on KZbin; VLC media player (open source) has even more (like [ and ] for speeding up, etc.). I hope that helps a bit as a tool if you missed it if you missed something. And like I said as another KZbin name on here, the Dr Dre thing is just a play on his first single (so it's just an "inside joke" type of thing, where fans are thinking Dre will say another thing about Slim, but he's doing a bait and switch). This song actually, which also prompted Mr. Mathers to write "The Way I Am," was written in response to a request by Jimmy Iovine from Interscope to have something lighter (much like "My Name Is", despite the lyrical content of both (although "My Name Is" doesn't even have the full "Banned" version on the Explicit album; the censorship on his next explicit album, _The Marshall Mathers LP_ , was even more apparent because they simply removed "kids" and "Columbine" instead of making him change the (core) lyrical phrases. He references this on "Rap God," another one you've reacted to, where he says the same line without censorship and then says, "Let's see if I can get away with it now that I'm not as big as I once was [...]") to introduce the record. Funny enough (I know you reacted to, "The Way I Am"), even though he says on the immediately aforementioned song, "I'm not going to be able to top a 'My Name Is'," this song did in fact do that by all quantitative measures and still, to this day, teenagers know the hook (I saw multiple reactions of high schoolers listening to 2000s hip hop, in which most of the songs they did not know, but, this one they (almost? There's always editing and some were compilations) all knew and most became excited & started singing the chorus).

It's not a diss/throwaway comment regarding Elvis but actually a poetic spin on the truth of his career.. Take a another listen.. And please.., I do not in any way mean that as a condescending comment.. Only Em right ... 🤷🏼♂️❤️

Great suggestion! I feel exactly the same with this track - because the song is so much fun, often the ‘goofiness’ gets in the way of the writing, the pop culture refs and insane rhyming are on another level here! I was in my 20’s when this was released and it still feels like yesterday when I hear it! What’s really cool though, is that my teenage son is a massive Em fan now too so I get to revisit all of these classics and see it for the first time through his eyes!

Elvis: Elvis was the biggest deal in that specific music genre and the black community said he stole thier music. This is why at the first years compared Em to Elvis - like he "stole" the rap music from the black community aswell. Lot of hater put him in songs and bc of this Em got this hater "Elvis" title in the beginning. Love and Peace from Hungary.

He is an artist on another level and his album To Pimp a Butterfly is widely regarded as one of if not the best rap album of all time. I do think you need to cultivate your palate a bit so to say before going in on TPAB though. Good kid, m.A.A.d city is a great album if you wanna do an album reaction sometime as he describes it as "A Short Film". Very vivid imagery of his life growing up in Compton described in the most poetic ways. He was also raised religious and incorporates a lot of themes from christianity in his texts.

I think its finally come to the time you should start to delve into Eminem's rap group D-12. They only made 2 CD's Devils Night came first and then D12 World... Almost everything on Devil's Night is similar to this era of music, (eminem show/Marshal Mathers LP) .. so its not quite as fast and not as many doubles, but more emotional and powerful bars.
