I checked out the Eminence Governor and shot it out against one of my favourite Celestion Vintage 30 - an 8 Ohm model from the year 2000.
Here are the IRs mentioned in the video: www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/9x0e3g...

Going through these shooutouts for a second time, one thing I notice that I notice with IRs too is the compared to most speaker the v30 has a steep roll-off into that massive high mid peak. It's something I often do eq wise both live and recording when not happy with the cut of a speaker. A resonant low pass often works really well, the v30 almost has it built in but very aggressively.

Ahhhh yes..the Governor! So underrated. I had a set in my Hughes and Kettner cab, and if they weren't so damn heavy, I'd have kept them. We need to petition a neodymium version of these to be made because they are absolute gems.

Quickly, right off the bat, yes those graphs are standardized, in the way they gather results, but not in the way they are represented. They are also standardized using a signal that has little to no bearing on a guitar signal unless you know what you're looking for. For instance, a speaker's response changes based on how hard it's being pushed, and these tests are generally only run as a specific volume. Some frequencies are exaggerated at higher volumes and reduced at lower volumes. The distance also matters, typically when putting a mic on a guitar cab you'll put it real close to the speaker creating a proximity effect that exaggerates the low end. The range and scale of the graph is also important, if you just look at the graphic, you would come to the conclusion that the Governor has a much bigger spike, when really it's not. If you look on the Y Axis on each graph, you'll see that the Celestion graph starts at 50db, and goes up to 110db, while the Eminence graph starts at 70db and goes to 110db. But, both speakers full frequency range starts around 75db, and spikes around 105db, the Eminence graph starting at 70 just makes the change look more dramatic compared to the Celestion. Also, if you compare the V30 graph to the Governor, you'll see that the spike of the V30 is at 2.3k sitting around 107db, with a dip to 103db at 2.8k, and another bump to 105db around 3.2k. The mid bump of the Governor peaks around 108db at 2.2k, with a similar dip to 106db around 2.8k and much smaller bump back up to 107 at 3k. The spike at 2.3k isn't what bothers people when they hear the V30, it's the cut at 2.8, it's a deep enough cut that it makes the 2.3 and 3.2 sound much more exaggerated than they are. Almost creating a notch filter. The Governor's smaller second bump avoids this. Keep in mind dB is not a standard unit of measure like an inch. It's a ratio. Every 10dB is generally perceived to our ear as being twice as loud. So going from 107dB down to 103dB can be thought of as being almost 40% quieter relative to one another. So the fact that the Governor doesn't spike back up as high at 3k is most likely to reason for the more smooth sound. All that being said, none of that REALLY matters because you are not using the same microphone that is used in those tests, and each microphone also has it's own frequency response curve that can effect that real world outcome. In the real world we also have the option of moving the microphone around to different locations on the speaker, at any distance or angle we want. All of these things can flat out negate the information of the speaker graph. haha.

The Eminence is probably the one I could listen to all day in the background and it would be less "tiring" - but if you turn it up (for me) there simply is something missing that the V30 undoubtedly has. Great shootout as always! Cheers!

I've been using Eminence speakers since 1976 if memory serves me. They came stock in my Ampeg amps. Back then I ran a VT22 with a 2 X 12 extension, in tandem with a Ampeg V4 which powered 2 of Ampeg's legendary 8 X 10 cabs. A few years back I purchased four of the Governors and couldn't be happier. From your post you seem to be very appreciative of their website, I was blown away but their tech support. Great video.

Another great example of how unless your after something specific, the Vintage30 is really hard to beat. I personally prefer a 212 cab with 1 Creamback and 1 Vintage30 combined. It balances out nearly perfect for almost any genre or style. If you need more raspy breakup, mix a Greenback and Vintage30 together for the Priest or Scorps tone. Those 3 models of Celestion speakers are all you should ever really need. Everything else I've ever tried or heard, did nothing those 3 can't already.

On a total side note, I really like your playing. I've hated the sound of the V30 ever since I got my first Boogie 4x12 back in 2006. I didn't identify it as the issue until many years later though, I went through so many amps and cabs and pedals trying to fix it. The V30, to me, is a good compliment speaker to something else. Much like using 2 mics on a single speaker to have a "bright" and a 'dark" mic, you can have a bright and dark speaker. The V30 is great to use as the bright nasty sound to mix in with a speaker with a nicer sounding low end that might not have enough bite to push through cymbals and stuff in a mix.

good shit! i could see why people prefer v30s as I do think they are a little more versatile in terms of dynamic range. For guitar I run a matamp green 2x12 loaded with eminence wizards (think governors but even more gritty) on top of a peavey 8020 to get some treble and mid definition into the sonic sludge that comes out of the two 10"s and the 18" from the peavey. works like a dream!

I know @SpectreSoundStudios likes to constantly complain about the vintage 30, but what I’m getting from your videos is that there is a reason it is so popular: it just sounds good. I’m surprised how it’s consistently my favorite. I’m also amazed at how some can sound similar when playing clean but distortion really brings out their character. These demos really reinforce Glenn’s belief that speakers can make a huge difference in your sound.

Wow, great comparison as usual, your playing just fine, don't worry. as for Governors vs V30.. Your graphs and samples in the video showed pretty much same thing that I experienced in real life after swapping V30 for Governors in my two Diezel 4x12 cabs. Governors have more open top end(you called it brilliance,) mids are less spiky than v30, but at the same time they more open and detailed (like there is more air in between harmonics, so governor sounds wider. Low end is similar, but in real life I felt that V30 low end is a little more blurry, where as governor is more defined and bold what I never liked about V30, is that they often seem to have more squished congested mids, and have this "way too close to your ear" effect, like some fuzz pedal do, so speaker sounds kinda tired and worn out. Governor sounds in v30 ballpark but more like v30 that was recorded and produced with some fixes in mixing console... I mean if we compare your raw recording tone in this video vs lets say " Killswitch Engage - The Signal Fire", I feel that governor is a little closer to that tone than v30. obviously I don't think that KSE guys use governors, but mixing engineer adjust guitar sound so end result it more "Governish". For me personally Governors worked better in live playing situation: amp is more sensitive to settings(so I can dial them better), that "wider mids" thing helps with clarity. if I had to point downsides of governor, I think it sounds more aggressive, pissed off, abrasive, whatever you wanna call it, it might not work in every single situation. lets say you want more of classic rock blurry lo fi tones, v30 can do them a little better, just because is less HD. governor will always had that modern HD twist. It's like 1080 vs 4k video. Once I tried to Mix speakers (V30 + Governors or Governors+G12K100), didn't really like the results, seems like this Mixing speaker from different manufacturers is like combing worst from both worlds. I know That GreenBack + V30 works great, but seems like Celestion and Eminence have their own sound, and mixing them in one box isn't the best thing I tried, so I guess, have you had 3 more governors in the cab, difference would be even more distinctive once again I wanted to say thank you for fair and actually great comparison. your speaker sound pretty much what I hear from my speakers. unfortunately there are plenty videos comparing V30 and governor, and somehow often governor sounds like shit (mic placement I guess), I always ask myself, WTF is wrong with those guys. cause I know for a fact that Governor is a hidden Gem of speakers, however brand new speakers will require some break in(out of the box the seem to be very stiff )

It's like Duncan Distortion vs Dimarzio Distortion pickups. Both companies have their own sound going on. From my understanding though, the guitarist for Faith No More had a Duncan Livewire in the bridge and an EMG 60 in the neck, so mixing brands isn't always bad.

Thanks Chris! I appreciate your words! Yeah, this one is quite different in the high end and I agree. It seems small looking changes, especially in the high end can make quite the difference. It's quite funny to me that most guitar spealers are spec'd out somewhere from about 75 Hz to 5000 Hz, yet it is the frequemcies above 5000 Hz, outside of the spec that appear to be so important for our perception

@@TheOtherJohnBrowne haven't really thought about that last point too much, but you're right! Lots of speakers are rated ~75 to 5.x! Yet the differences are so big there (I mean at least for people with either good ears or who played their 4x12"s next to a drumkit with proper hearing protection). Another thing is... when you think about it there is not really an average v30. yours from 2000 sounds really good. thanks to celestions "qc" and other factors it's always a difficult speaker to make comparisons with!

@TheOtherJohnBrowne I installed one on my Marshall JCM800 4010 combo to replace the Celeston Wolverine speaker which was so trebbly it gave me headaches. Personally it solved major issues for that amp! I wanted to get 4 more for my Carvin 4x12 cab, but the prices shot up insanely from when I bought the first one, and it might be a crap shoot putting them in this cab. I respect how you do your reviews and would be curious to see what you come up with! Appreciate the time reading this long winded post lol

Actually, I consider interactions with likeminded enthusiasts like this as one of the perks of doing youtube, so thank you! I keep hearing that the DV-77 is a little darker than a V30 so that lines up with your experience. Yeah, the DV-77 isn't cheap. The price of Eminence speakers has gone up significantly in the recent past in Europe and the DV-77 is even more expensive than the "standard" Eminence range which is why I too have settled for buying only one of them for the time being :-D

@TheOtherJohnBrowne yeah they were a custom buid even for Eminence standards. Extremely nicely build quality. I would agree, a little on the dark side, but has this smooth midrange bark. I bought mine new in Canada for $118.0 then about 2 months later, I go to buy 4 of them and the price shot up $225.0 a speaker and just scrapped the idea lol.

I was multitasking while this video was on. Heard some guitar, heard some MUCH better guitar so I looked to see what it was. It was the V30.

Their CV 75 seems closer to the 30 but the Governor is more interesting. It’s got a low mids throaty

Is there a volume difference between the Guv and the 30? Or is it the highs of the 30 giving us a percieved volume difference? Thanks for the content. I feel like it is just the tonality shifts that give the illusion of louder. Liked and subbed.
@TheOtherJohnBrowne
@TheOtherJohnBrowne 5 ай бұрын
Thanks! I appreciate it. There is a slight volume difference between the two but it's pretty minor. I set the preamps when recording to give me about the same headroom. Later in editing I try to match the volumes as close to the same perceived volume as well as I can as to not create an advantage for one

@@TheOtherJohnBrowne You did a great job. The only difference (that I could tell) was in the "volume" of the highs.........that of the 30 being "louder in highs" than that of the Guv. Thanks the the quick reply. I'm looking forward to more content.

Depends on the definition of smooth, I guess. This particular Governor really fell off a cliff after 5 kHz. I don't know if that's representative of all Governors though

Celestion and Eminence definitely do NOT measure the same way. I wish they did. Celestion likes to obfuscate all their speaker parameters too.

The Governor definitely has that Eminence quality that I like from them: open high end, and a more "deep" midrange. I think that's like 90% down to the high end. V30 has that treble peak that focuses most of the energy in one narrow area. Governor doesn't seem to have that, or has it in a higher range where it comes across as presence instead.

@TheXxPSYCHO, my Governor has more bass and low mid response than my UK V30 in an open back combo amp. Never tried in a closed back cab. I feel like their goal was optimize the V30 type voice for a single speaker combo amp. Just a hunch

Vintage 30 demolished the Eminence. V30's sound modern and cutting and sit forward in the mix.
