My male is so smart and he’s learned a schedule! Every night when I start getting ready for bed, he will climb up to a set corner of his enclosure. I will then get him out and handle him for a few minutes, then he goes back in and gets his food! He’s probably one of my favorite pets and he’s so sweet!

This is my mice story! :D When I was like 11-12 years old I REALLY wanted mice... like SO BAD that I did more research than anyone should EVER do and I made a notebook (mice wiki) and what do you know... a day before xmas my parents get home....... and they have brought 2 little mice!! ........... it turned out they were ...... A BOY AND A GIRL....... I named them Martha and Minhauzens and I loved them. Even the people working at the pet shop didn’t know their gender so it was a big surprise. Because I wasn’t expecting different gender mice, I didn’t have another ANYTHING at that moment so they HAD to stay in the same glass tank for at least a week. It was a very big mistake because Martha soon after got pregnant (she looked like a pear😂) we soon after seperated the two. One night I heard Martha squealing SOOO loud so I rushed up to the cage and she was giving birth so I just sat next to the cage for like 45 minutes. There were 12 babies born. I helped Martha raise them and it was awesome. My mom OBVIOUSLY was SHOCKED and she didnt let me keep all of them because of space issues so I gave away 8 of the babies and I was left with 6 mice in total (2 adults, 4 babies) when they got a bit older we had to seperate them by gender ofc and when they are young, they have that “popcorn” phase so one of our little boys (remember him) jumped out of my container and ran away through a hole in my wall under the floor. I was worried so I left him food and water on the floor and fortunately every morning I saw that he had eaten some of the food. Like a week after, my dad somehow made a harmless mouse trap and I got my baby back. All of my 6 mice lived a happy life and all 3 of my girls passed away because of a tumour and all the boys died because of age ;( but the little traveler who escaped lived the longest!

Getting mice is one of the best decisions I've made tbh and it's a lot thanks to you and the fact that I stumbled across your channel. I currently have two but I'm planing on getting at least one more so that no one gets left alone if something were to happen (or at least the risk gets smaller). They live in an Ikea detolf and soon I'm getting some apple tree branches from my mom that I'm going to put in their enclosure (my mom has several apple trees so I know they haven't been sprayed with pesticides or such). I really hope they'll like it and find them fun to climb and explore. I also make tiny hanging hides for them which they also seem to appreciate a lot. I also came to think of their different personalities, they're from the same breeder and one of them, named Shade, is really friendly and social. As soon as I come to the cage she comes up to the glass and wants me to pick her up and she loves being with me, climbing around inside my shirts, and she's even hard to convince to go back into the cage. The other one, named Skaði, is a lot more shy and runs and hides when I come. She does come out after a little while and starts walking up on my hand and such, but she's not as fond of being around- and on me for prolonged periods of time. They're both my babies though and I love them.

Late to the party, but my girlfriend suggested that maybe I should look into owning mice after, without fail, I've been having dreams about owning mice near-weekly for about a year. I've made sure to do extensive research, usually cross referencing multiple videos and articles to make sure the info is 100% correct; and while I don't consider myself financially secure enough for mice YET, I do believe with about another month of saving up I'll be ready to take this first step! Your videos especially have been very helpful and informative, and I would really love to build my own enclosure after viewing some of the enclosures shown on your channel. If anyone is somehow reading this despite how late I am, could you give me advice on homebrew diets? I've heard a lot of store brand rodent food can actually be harmful, so I'm wondering if building my own diet would make my mice happier and healthier. I also live in a colder area and know drafts can possibly be a death sentence for mice, so I want to take extra measures to keep them warm. Could a heating pad be safe for them?

I do love them and care for them (planning on getting them a bigger cage aswell because their currently is only big enough to provide basics) but my family depises their smell though I'm unbothered by it. I had them in my room till I was told to be them in another room with our family cat and dog and I feel uncomfortable with that so I'll hopefully get another bigger cage as soon as possible so I can put them somewhere else

This is a very nice video :D I personally never owned mice and sadly wont be able to in the future but ive had rats, gerbils and other rodents etc. in the past. One thing that you could have mentioned are missalligned teeth as a health risk. I dont know how common this actually is but ive seen how fast it can hurt an animal. It can just take maybe 24-48h until the mice might not be able to eat properly anymore and you usually have to cut the teeth and continue monitoring for the rest of their lifes. I got a little sad when you said that some people treat them as "just" lab animals etc because i actually am an laboratory animal technician from germany and i work with mice on a daily basis and we treat our animals with respect. I have one story that i usually tell peple that are angry at my job choice: When i was in my frist year of training i was working in our breeding facility. I spotted a female that had trouble giving birth. She was a normal black six(inbred strain of lab mice) that was paired to a cd1 male(outbred strain) so the offspring was not something "special" genetically they could have been "reproduced". She has had 2 pups already but she was suffering so we had to humanely euthanize her and we also had to take the other babies out right away. Now most people assume that we would euthanize the pups and "move on" with our day. But the 2 giant metalheads i was working with that day picked up the tiny lifeless pups and showed me how to stimulate them to breathe and just seeing 2 men with a tiny pink jellybean like baby in their hand begging them to breathe and and almost jumping for joy when the pups finaly did, showed me how important my job actually is. In my training they taught us that we are the animals direct connection to the authorities and its our resposibility to make sure that we protect our animals from all possible harm. I believe at least here in germany we treat our lab animals better than most pet stores and private owners even though they have smaller cages.(From what ive seen)

@Emiology4 жыл бұрын
Brothers stand the best chance of not fighting, but as they get older and their hormones kick in they can still be unpredictable and fight overnight and do serious damage to each other. It's up to you whether you think it's worth risking or not, I think i'd be too nervous about the possibility of something happening when I wasn't there to house them all together, but for some rare cases it does work out to be fine.

Why is everyone so obsessed with turning detolf cabinets into cages? Why detolfs specifically? Is there any advantage to other (wooden) cabinets into cages, or is it just because the glass looks more fancy?
@Emiology4 жыл бұрын
Because it’s cheap and easily accessible in many countries. An actual fish or reptile tank this size would cost hundreds instead of just £60. Of course there’s advantages to other cabinets, wider and taller would be good, but they may need more modifications which most people probably don’t have the tools to do!

What if you get three females with the same age and they grow old and pass away and you are left alone with one old female? Would it be necessary to get another one or rehome if the one remaining doesn’t have a lot of time left? I want female mice but im scared something like that would happen and i dont know whats the ideal for that mice in that situation if you dont want to own mice long-term

Yes if the remaining mouse is in good enough health to survive introductions and doesn’t have any health issues that would mean it will imminently die it’s important to still provide friendship. It could live days / weeks / months more, there’s no way of knowing and it’s not fair for them to possibly be alone for their last few months ☺️

I have a 6ft long by 2ft high by 2ft width vivarium, its glass at the front and wooden all around (the wood is glazed so it cant be chewed and it wont absorb moisture) I had my beardie in it that passed away recently but the cage is in amazing condition. It has 3 ventilation vents at the top and two at the bottom and the temperatures range between 22°c and 26°c in there. I can get hooks that will be used for hanging things and I'm planning on setting up a really natural enclosure for 3 females. Is this okay??

I’m looking for a fun to watch cute but not so cuddly pet that is active and that can have atleast one friend so I think mice are a wonderful option and no Kaytee Crittertrails!,
