I think Qatar lost all the positive PR they had received in Australia when they (well the airport officials in Doha) pulled 18 women off a plane to do a physical search of them. The response was to slow to fix any PR problem.

I doubt so. Most passengers really don't care much about this. We care about their business class, cabin experience, etc... One off accidents rarely last long in our short memory. The media and Australia reacted shockingly to the incident, but if I were one of those passengers on board I'd be willing to take a strip search because the issue was a baby and me taking a strip search if in any way could help them find out the parent(s) of the baby I'm completely okay with that.

As a platinum member with Qatar they are hands down the worlds best airlines. Recently flew Australia to Spain and there was 40 people on board a 777. What they have done with the Covid restrictions and getting people home as catapulted then way above anyone else. Nice video Dan - massive fan

Those women ordered from their flights at Doha recently and subjected to an invasive procedure, will likely disagree. Not that this is the first or only negative issue with Qatar. Regarding getting people home, I tried to help a lady from Norway recently, stranded here in Cambodia. It took a lot of effort to finally get Qatar to move and change her ticket to leave from PNH via ICN. I wasn't impressed at all. As Danv had explained here, that "we'll get you home" slogan was mostly a marketing ploy; altruism had nothing to do with it (ironically, they introduced it only days before cutting flights to some cities, PNH being one).

09:00 “At some point it’s cheaper to operate an empty plane with cargo in the belly than staff an entire plane for 30 pax”. Correction; if a passenger plane gets used for cargo only, it still needs staff. As long as there are seats installed, cabin crew needs to fly as well, even if there are zero passengers on board. So let’s say an A380 with 8 pairs of passenger doors (meaning 16 passenger doors) will still need 16 cabin crew at least to be allowed to fly. And If I’m not mistaken; 1 crew member per 50 installed seats. But that’s easa so maybe not for UAE

Emirates and Qatar's Kolkata operations I think is a very interesting comparison to check. Qatar used to fly 787s, Emirates flew 777-300. And now, Qatar downsized to A320. And Emirates, who used to fly A330s, withdrew the fleet, forcing them to fly their 777s throughout the lockdown with a maximum of 150 passengers on a good day (a full load on Qatar, barely half on the 777). Qatar also flies a lot of cargo out of Kolkata, almost daily so that's also making their route more profitable.

Emirates apparently keeps rescheduling flights from New Zealand so they can maximise passenger numbers, which is understandable and seems consistent with what's in your video. They offer plenty of flights but it seems like a lottery as to which one will depart. I had booked a flight but cancelled myself so avoided this, though I think my flight did depart (a bummer). NZ has a managed isolation system where one has to book a place in a hotel in which to isolate for a fortnight upon returning from overseas - before one can book a flight. If Emirates reschedules a flight then one has to re-apply for a place in managed isolation. Given there is low capacity in these hotels it is a nightmare for people wishing to travel, especially since Emirates has been almost the only airline offering reasonable airfares.

I take the liberty to make a simple suggestion to EMIRATES! Bearing in mind that they have the largest fleet of A380 lying idle - which forceably will not recuperate in the years to come, since even before this crisis appeared they were not using the entire fleet of A380s! The solution would be for them to seek moving about half of their fleet to a base in Africa, since we know that the only continent that has a foreseeable growth factor is in fact Africa. By seeking agreement with an Africa country which can be easily achieved, they would be able to introduce an Inter - African fleet to connect all the African nations. The base could be in Kenya or Addis Ababa for instance. We all know that Africa is The Continent of the Future and it is opening up at this exact moment, so, a venture such as this one could become a boon for the UAE and Emirates... Good luck EMIRATES is one of my favorite airlines!

The thing is that aircrafts need to fly on rotation to keep them working and crew and pilots would lose their license if they don’t fly for a certain amount of time. Paying 15 crew for an empty flight is still cheaper than getting them re-licensed. There are many more reasons behind their decision to fly...and by the way as an EK insider I can guarantee that flights have more than a couple of dozens of pax. Most of them reach at least half load giving headaches to those expecting middle seats to be kept vacant 😅 Anyway yea, most of EK and QR decisions are copy paste from each other. Also in management, payroll, crew allowances and crew hotel choices.

Dan, in customer relations when you have a commodity (here a seat flying from point A to B) corporations often have a unique perspective. In the US we have HomeDepot and Lowe’s which sell essentially the same products. They have a lot of seasonal stock in upper shelves. I used to wonder why. The answer from a senior executive was: we will not risk not having what you want when out competitor could win you over because they have that item in stock. Customer loyalty is in the past. People shop on cost and convenience. If you shift stores for one item, that customer may never return. Just another perspective. Crazy yes. But real.

Well Emirates big problem may also be because of its lack of point to point travel. Emirates is a super connecter which works good for them but most airlines have changed from hub an spoke to point to point since it is better for the customer and for the company finances. Since you only need to do 1 flight to get to the passengers destination while Emirates usually runs flight through its hub E.g Heathrow - Dubai - Sydney. This costs more than a direct non stop flight Heathrow - Sydney. But this also means that passengers from the first journey are stuck at a hub for a couple of hours with a slight chance for more passengers to board. But, I can’t change the fact that Emirates is profitable using its model.
