wait but I thought the gas was emitting photons ?? so how is it. like is it absorbing the photons or emitting them what's happening here

the gas first has to absorb photons of energy in order to emit them, i think. when the photons are absorbed in a continuous spectra (like from the sun) what WE will see is an absorption spectra because those photons of energy were absorbed into cold gasses therefore we can't see them anymore, and when put through a machine we will see the emission spectra because after the cold gas absorbs them photons, they will get hotter because of more movement and in the end spit out the photons of energy (same amount that they absorbed), leaving us with the emission spectra. does that make sense 😅
