I visited my friend in Austin TX last Thanksgiving- who is originally from Nice (France)- and the look I got from her when I asked "Is it ok to drink from the tap here?" was one of "Lol!...Wait, you're serious?? Are you okay? Do you need help??" She then asked if it's a regular thing for Americans to consider tap water unsafe, and if all tap water in the U.S. was considered non-drinkable. I had to explain how it really depends on where you live. For context, I live in rural Louisiana. We've had a Boil water advisory for 5 years now (going on 6). I ask myself at least monthly why I even pay for running water. Even if I only pay $14 monthly for it, I actually wouldn't mind paying *more* for utilities if I could, y'know- DRINK IT without dying. She then went on to tell me how that would never happen in France ((or, rather, how it'd be A.) Temporary B.) The people wouldn't pay and wouldn't drink it or C.) Edit: according to the rules of PEMDAS, multiplication and division are in the same group. this means that if one of those operations comes first in the problem, it's done first, whether it's multiplication or division. addition and subtraction are also in a group together (separate from the multiplication/division group), so they have the same rules for which comes first. 7:44 first, you divide the 10 by 5, which gets 2. Then, you multiply the 2 by the... other 2, and you get 4. This means that the problem is now 4 - 3 + 4. The next step is to do 4 - 3, which gets 1. Now the only thing left to do is add 1 and 4, and you get 5. wish that I didn't have to move the actual comment to below where the "read more" is on most comments, but I also don't feel like having the exact same conversation 246 times

It's easier to understand when written like this Parentheses Exponents Multiplication/Division Addition/Subtraction I can see how some people might get it confused when written differently, but I assure you this is how PEMDAS goes. While technically, in the word PEMDAS, division is after multiplication, they still happen at the same time, left to right.

Oder of operations at my school use to be GEMS (groupings, exponents, multiplication and division, subtraction and division). Then it was switched to PEMDAS to be more accurate, and the way my teachers originally taught it was that multiplication came first. Same with addition. I was also taught by other teachers that it is done the way you explained. The first way kinda stuck with me and it has been correct all the time. I made it into honors math classes for the past 3 years with that technique. So I gonna stick with 0.
