9:42 metal shards in shower head. They are solder from copper plumbing. If you overheat the pipes while soldering, long strands like this can form on the inside. Definitely a sign of improper soldering, if that’s what they are.

The tiny doors could also be due to superstition Specifically, the Brownie (or Broonie) which is a type of household spirit that enters at night and does housework in exchange for a bowl of milk or cream. And they will abandon places if they feel at all insulted or taken advantage of, so some houses implemented tiny doors to let them come and go easier to keep them happier Specifically the one leading from outside to the kitchen is what makes me think this. Since they would primarily be thought to do kitchen work. The basement could be to get to storage, for things like kitchen supplies and such (also, the baked item "Brownies" is likely named after the fairies, since they'd often leave "baked chocolate squares" for the homeowners)

If we are being technical, it’s the result of whales that died with a bunch of stuff stuck in their gut, parasitic worms, squid beaks, other hard things that got tangled, usually the reason they died is because of the stuff, and it ends up floating for a long while before eventually coming ashore with the pleasant smell that it is valued so highly for

those eggs are vital for backyard chickens. it keeps the chickens from getting in the habit of eating their own eggs. it only takes one egg accidentally breaking once in a nesting area and the chicken eating it for it to be like 'oh yes! this is great!' then it learns that it can eat what comes out of it. keeping one of those fake eggs in their nesting areas helps because when they go to peck at the eggs, they'll peck the fake one and go 'ow, f@&#!' and it breaks their habit (they're usually ceramic, so super hard material).

By the size of that egg surrogate, I'd surmise it was for homing pigeons rather than chickens.
@vyperpunk4881
@vyperpunk4881 7 күн бұрын
It could have also been used for nesting shore or sea birds. Biologists do the surrogate swap with endangered and threatened species as it increases hatch rates. They incubate the eggs until hatch and then return them to the nest. The parents are given surrogate eggs so they don't abandon their nest. The egg could have been stolen by a predator, then dropped in the water when it was discovered to be non edible.
@Jdbye
@Jdbye 9 күн бұрын
In some places (such as the US), it's illegal to buy and sell ambergris. And since whales are endangered species, it can only be collected naturally from the ocean. It also needs to age for about a decade after excretion, as it initially smells bad. All those things combine to make supply highly limited, and since perfume is so expensive, makes it a highly profitable material.

I don't think the brown gas was bromine. Bromine is usually stored as a liquid. I think it's dinitrogen tetroxide which can be used to demonstrate the effects of heat and pressure on the chemical equalibrium of a reaction. In this case there are two states it can be in. Dinitrogen tetroxide (dark brown, similar colour to bromine) and nitrogen dioxide (yellowish colour). So yeah. Not nearly as bad as bromine but still horrible. 8:43 Not so sure that's the simplest solution. Was probably a neighbor's kid making a tiktok, broke it in a rush to leave. Like if they were _supposed_ to be grounded, went out to make a tiktok, then got a text from their parents saying they were on the way home, queue chaos sprint back home. Tried to grab the phone from the magnet mount (can see part of the magnet mount was cleaved off), and either forgot the rest of the mount or they were in far too much of a rush to bother getting the base.

ambergris is used in perfume etc mainly because it helps the perfume actually last and not fade right away. fun fact many emperors//kings and such fancy people in the past would eat ambergris, just in case in being in nice smell stuff wasn't weird enough haha.

5:22 It would look more useful if the sink was flipped around so the faucet was mounted on the inside of the curve so as you swing the faucet from one side to the other, the stream of water stayed in the sink instead of going from counter to sink to counter as it would in this image... It would also look MUCH happier...the current sink looks like it's frowning at you... 😄😁😆😅😂🤣

The only way I’d see this really working out is if it was slanted one way so that anything washed off would travel down to a drain, and from what I can see it might actually be that way! Though, it seems a little limited in space compared to a regular rectangle sink. And depending on the size, you probably couldn’t fit stuff like grape containers in there for washing so it might just be inconvenient.

We had some bromine at my school. It is used in some reactions. They used it to show a light-induced radical substitution between bromine and hydrocarbons for example. You can also just store it in a glass bottle, but it might leak some vapor, so you'd wanna keep it in a fume hood. So if it is regularly used, it is usually kept in a bottle. In an ampule you can keep it indefinitely.

The tube of bromine is used for mass spectroscopy. You use the wavelengths of light given off by a substance to identify it. It's basically how we know what distant stars are made of. Also, "did you cook the bread?" "Yes." "Well, cook it again!"

0:50 is one of a pair used to demonstrate diffusion, one holds bromine and air, the other just bromine. You cool them down to condense the bromine, the one with just bromine refills with vapour uniformly, the one with bromine + air forms a gradient.

Regarding the curved sink: You're supposed to chop and assemble food on the semicircle and wash the food in the area around it and scrape the trimmings from prep into the sink. It's also supposed to be handy for filling pots and whatnot. I've used one of those and admire the out-of-the-box thinking, but, having worked in commercial kitchens, and having a lifelong passion for design, engineering,and architecture... I gotta wonder what kind of multiday drinking binge the designers were on to be drunk enough for long enough to get that idea off of the napkin, let alone into any kind of production. Seriously. Five minutes of real thought would demonstrate what a poor design that is. Scratch that. The napkin should have never left the table. A Prep Cook and Sous Chefs station may have a dedicated prep sink behind or next to a good size cutting board, but here we have a design that has all of the few inconveniences and none of the plentiful advantages of a proper Prep Sink.

Back in the 80's there was a show called "Tales from the Darkside" and one of the episodes was of a young woman hired to be a babysitter for a single father. There was a little 1 foot door in his daughters closet and she was told to never go in there. She opened it up and found out it was full dolls. But his daughter was hiding among them and killed the babysitter. Fast forward a couple years later and our apartment building had burnt down and the new place had one of these little doors built in. I told her i wasn't sleeping up there. In the converted attic. Every time i looked at that door i got the Hebbe Jezus.

The prep sink.....you do your prepping (peeling, chopping, rolling, etc) right there in the front, and all the bits and garbage just get swept/pushed right into the sink as you go. I'll bet it has a really good garbage disposal hooked to it. No, I don't have one and I wouldn't want one. 😄

5:23 my best guess is it's designed to have filter-like inserts that you can slide across, so you have someone put lets say lettuce in a thing, and slot it in on the right. you slide it in front of you, to wash it, then slide it to the left so that the next person can pull it when they're ready for it, assembly line style. that's the best i've got, and i feel like that's giving a lot of credit. i can ask someone who's worked in the food industry though, they might have insight.
