Basically this. Hiroshima was selected to send a message that the US could strike any target with impunity. Tokyo was picked because of its importance as the heart of the Japanese Empire, but Nagasaki was the secondary target due to the fact that it was a major industrial center. As insane and inconceivable as it is today, Hiroshima was meant to be a warning, while Nagasaki was meant to completely break the spirit of the Japanese people.

Which would make Operation Downfall (a full naval invasion of mainland Japan) necessary, and as the Battle of Okinawa had shown, that would have been a *horrifying* bloodbath for both sides. The japanese suffering casualties due to suicidal tactics (Kamikaze Forces and Banzai Charges) and the americans from fighting an extremely fanatical enemy that would rather throw themselves off cliffs or die in frontal assaults than surrendering (as, again, seen on Okinawa). Or short: Hiroshima - Had tons of factories and industry vital for the war effort. Nagasaki - Large Port important for supplying troops, and one of the largest japanese Shipyards.

AP The committee settled on two "psychological" objectives of the first atomic bombing: to scare the Japanese into unconditional surrender and to impress upon the world the power of the new weapon. That second goal was especially important to the researchers choosing the target. The atomic bomb was still top secret, but the scientists had an even more frightening secret. Within a few years, they expected to have a "super-bomb": the hydrogen (or thermonuclear) bomb. At the time, they believed H-bombs on top of missiles could destroy the world. Physicist Edward Teller wasn't on the committee, but a letter he wrote sums up the anxiety of the bomb builders: "Our only hope is in getting the facts of our results before the people. This might help to convince everybody that the next war would be fatal. For this purpose actual combat use might even be the best thing." The target committee decided the A-bomb had to kill. At the time, American bombers were already firebombing many cities, killing tens of thousands. But they wanted it to be horrible, to end the war and to try to stop the future use of nuclear bombs. They chose Hiroshima. "Hiroshima is compact," Wellerstein says. The Army estimated the bomb killed 70,000 to 80,000 people. The war ended. And did it make nuclear war unthinkable? For those who were wondering, the U.S. picked Hiroshima due to military targets and it’s compact size. The compact size would show the world the power of the bomb, destroying the entire city, and because there were factories and other facilities dedicated to military use. Nagasaki after that was similar, a large shipyard was there, and was where the Yamato class battleships were built. Why America nuked Hiroshima: The guys in charge severely underestimated how powerful it was. They wanted to set a message. They did. Twice. The second one was because it pissed off a lot of people, and they wouldn't calm down enough to surrender. The rogues fucked up. They quickly stopped after realizing America could continue the onslaught of nukes. They had quite the passion though. Yeah, not America's proudest moments in history.

The vaseline on the motherboard is actually very necessary as its used for LN2 overclocking as a moisture barrier because otherwise you'd end up with condensation on the motherboard from such low temps
