OUAT S4E17: Best Laid Plans
I am not going to lie, but I was just crying my balls out in this very, very powerful scene.
We could really see how instant Emma put back up her walls, it was just a matter of seconds. This is definitely a huge blow to her, I could even say that there is a strong sense of betrayal, you know, Snowing's real motive of encouraging Emma to be heroic, could it even be solely because that they did not want to be eaten alive by their past mistakes and guilt, I mean, how hurtful could that be?
And before this scene, I am more than glad to know that Snow's moral compass was suddenly on point the moment when David was tempted to burn the page; it sets me thinking if this scene was a depiction of Snow's self-moral dilemma, meaning to say that David could be the one having the other half of Snow's heart containing the dark spot and he was just the other half of Snow's moral compass.
Also, let me just add how the Regina-Snow dynamism has changed throughout this season? Regina did not told Snow's secret and I just felt very touching on her part to do that. Snow even highlighted that Regina's a friend now and this may constitute her real motivation to tell Emma the hard truth.
Do share with all the ONCERS out there!

I feel for Emma because people all her life have disappointed her and let her down so you can't blame her for putting up walls. All she has ever wanted was to feel safe, so once you break her trust, it's hard for her to trust again. We saw it with the Snow Queen/Ingrid, Lily, Neal & August. She felt abandoned & rejected by them at one point in her life. She never had a stable home or ever felt safe in a relationship. So, it's like having the rug being pulled up from under her feet again, and you can't blame her for reacting that way to her mother.

Actually, I can blame Emma for reacting that way. I've been in her position, with having had people let me down and reject me at different points in my life. It happens over and over again. But I still am willing to try again if people show me that they're trying to change. Not to mention that they were trying to PROTECT HER. For someone who goes on and on about how she feels like they abandoned her, Emma really doesn't show any appreciation for the fact that a lot of what they've done, they did because they thought those things would be ways to NOT abandon her. It's not their fault that Regina time-locked Storybrooke into a loop and rewrote everyone's memories. It's not their fault that Isaac wrote the story so that Lily would fall through the portal after the darkness was embedded into her. It's not their fault that in order to properly break the Dark Curse, Regina pretty much had to send back everyone she brought into Storybrooke through the original curse. It's not their fault that Emma chose to turn Hook into a Dark One to try and save him, upon which he chose to kill Merlin to get back to Storybrooke and destroy the light. Every single thing Emma's blamed Snowing for has either not been their fault or has been an attempt to try and provide for/care for/protect her. Because the thing is, Emma has it stuck in her head that "heroes are the nice guys." And she's wrong about that. Sometimes heroes have to do horrible things (kill, maim, destroy, even lie) to protect the light in others. Sometimes heroes have to allow in that speck of darkness in order to be champions of the light. Snow and Charming together chose to trap Emma's darkness in Lily. Snow killed Cora to protect Storybrooke. Emma killed Maleficent to gain an antidote and killed Cruella to protect Henry. The Mills-White-Swan family is by no means clean-handed, even though they are all heroes.

Albus Nix Wow, that was lengthy rebuttal. I think the question is "What makes a hero?" A hero can make bad choices. They can make mistakes & have a dark side & be very flawed. They also don't always win. No, they are not always the nice guys. They don't always do the right thing & they are capable of hurting others. We all know Emma is not perfect & we all react in our own way to pain. Maybe her hostility towards her mother is questionable, but I think she was only feeling protective of Lily because she knows what it feels like to be misplaced, lost, alone, not having a family to grow up with, etc. Emma & Lily share that bond of abandonment. You never forget those wounds. When we look at our mothers, we want to think they should know better & make the right choices because we look up to them as our role-models. But Snow made a choice out of fear instead of faith. Maybe in her mind she thought she was protecting Emma, but she made an impulsive choice only to regret it later on. I think Snow acted like any worried mother would when faced with a life-threatening dilemma. She faced the consequences & was left bereft as well. So they all lost something. I think Snow learned from her mistakes & she owned up to it. What makes any of them a hero is the journey they are willing to take to become better versions of themselves.

Nikka Rose Haha sorry . . . didn't really mean it as a refutation, but more as a "well I can call her out on it because I've been in kind of similar situations before. All of your original points were good, and I respect your opinion; I just wanted to throw my opinion out there as well. I also agree with all of what you said in your response (which I think is because it sounds like you kind of agree with my points about Emma's misperception of "being a hero" at least up until Season 4B).

@Morning Glory, I 100% agree with you. And to further add to you comment it for sure hurt Emma more than usual because both Charming and Snow continued to hold themselves above approach as pillars of goodness. Like during season 3 when they were in Neverland and then tried doing it again in this season by trying to convince Emma and Regina not to let cruella and ursula in because they were quote on quote evil. And then made Emma doubt herself when she asked them multiple times what was up with them.

It wasn't anger, it was pain. She pulled away because she was hurting and wanted to be alone. I believe her anger started coming out from the moment she turned to Snow and told her "I don't care"

Still I wish, they casted a slightly younger actress to play Emma, the real life age gap between the actors is weird. I know that everyone "was frozen in time" so Emma caught up to her parents age but it still ruins the whole thing. I don't buy the mother-father/daughter dynamic.

I love how good and evil isn’t exactly definitive in the once opinion a time universe The villains have moments of good and the heroes have moments of evil It’s a very satisfying change of pace that I hope Disney can give us again in the future

I kind of wish the show gave us that conversation, rather than just showing the aftermath. Based on the spin they put on it (because of the author, we were put on the path to causing Maleficent to lose her child) and the justifying they do (it was worth it, it was the only way to ensure you grew up to be good) I'd be interested to see how they told Emma. I understand the decision not to (the audience doesn't need the same information delivered twice) but I would be interested in hearing just how many details the Charmings gave and how they delivered them

They keep trying to justify their actions with good intentions. Snow has the excuse of pregnancy hormones but Charming doesn't. He's supposed to take sense into her. I think Emma is upset more about them taking her choice in her life away then the lying and nom-trust. She felt protective and responsible over Lily because it was her darkness. Owning up to their mistakes is what made Emma trust her parents to keep her safe.

@KenyaGirly I actually don’t like Regina that much, and I don’t blame the people around her. I mean she blamed a 10 year old for being manipulated by her mother? No, Regina is responsible for her own actions and is an adult
