She doesn't hate men and what she said is very true. Try to understand what she is saying. She says that sexual violence should be treated as violence and not treated as a light misdemeanor. Some people don't see sexual violence for what it is and therefore do not associate the term with the act; that is what she is saying. Also, she isn't trying to fix gender disparity by physically getting more men in the universities. She wants more men involved in the quest for gender equality. She says that women aren't the only ones who need to stand up for gender equality for women. In a nutshell, men should not only focus on their own social issues but also assist women in theirs. It goes the same for women. She NEVER said men are bad. As for leadership roles, some people only seem to view leadership roles in terms of political roles. That is not the main focus. The focus is also on the business sector, banking sector and other sectors. There are many studies being done on this subject which can help us all understand on the role and pay disparity that women face. In all, she doesn't have anything against men and she isn't the only one who has raised such issues. Maybe all those commenting here could take some time out and try to understand the issue and then place a comment. Gender equality has been an issue for all these years past and will probably still be an issue in years to come. However, if more people like Emma Watson exist, it will lessen the impact.

"She says that sexual violence should be treated as violence and not treated as a light misdemeanor." It isn't treated as such in the developed world. "Some people don't see sexual violence for what it is and therefore do not associate the term with the act; that is what she is saying." Guess it depends on what you consider sexual violence. "She says that women aren't the only ones who need to stand up for gender equality for women." No one should stand up for gender equality, because the genders are objectively different and therefore cannot be equal. They can have the same rights, which they do in the developed world. "In a nutshell, men should not only focus on their own social issues but also assist women in theirs." In a nutshell feminists need to do exactly that. " There are many studies being done on this subject which can help us all understand on the role and pay disparity that women face." There is zero evidence that a "pay gap" exists. "she doesn't have anything against men" Then why is she a feminist? "Maybe all those commenting here could take some time out and try to understand the issue and then place a comment. " Maybe feminists could take some time and actually substantiate their wild claims with actual facts and data? "Gender equality has been an issue for all these years past and will probably still be an issue in years to come." Gender equality cannot exist. Men and women are genetically different. Female humans are more genetically similar to female chimpanzees than they are to male humans. Same goes for us men, we are more genetically similar to male chimps than female humans. THESE ARE FACTS. Men and women already have equal rights in the developed world, and that world is working hard to get the rest of the world to join us in the 20th+ century.

I would say getting 3 months of jail time for raping an unconscious woman is an example of sexual violence being taken very lightly. Have you even heard of rapist Brock Turner?
@jib10008 жыл бұрын
emma d I guess you and i have a different idea of what sexual violence is. Define your terms. Brock Turner didn't injure the woman in any way. She doesn't even have any memory of the event. Also 3 months of jail time and being a registered sex offender is not the same punishment as a light misdemeanor which is a fine. All this is beside the fact. This is a crazy exception that is probably not over with. This is not a typical rape case, and is not typical of the sentencing people face when convicted of rape.

jib1000 Thank you for your reply. Developed world: “the nations of the world which are considered more economically and technologically advanced; industrialized nations”. A developed world is a developed country, not just economically and technologically but socially as well. If we look it up, we will find arguments for why a nation is developed or is not developed and these articles largely focus on the economy, infrastructure, technology, living standards in general and so on. A truly developed world, as you have pointed out, would have equal rights for men and women. According to the United Nations Population Fund, “gender equality is a precondition for advancing development” and “gender equality remains an unfulfilled promise”. Here’s the link - www.unfpa.org/gender-equality. Not only the United Nations but the World Bank has almost yearly reports prepared on Global Gender Gap. Additionally, the developing world still exists because Third World Countries still exist - because developing countries and emerging economies still exist. In fact, the Global Gender Gap Report by the World Bank focused on 144 major and emerging economies. You can read about it here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Gender_Gap_Report In addition, as for you saying that “Gender equality cannot exist. Men and women are genetically different. Female humans are more genetically similar to female chimpanzees than they are to male humans. Same goes for us men, we are more genetically similar to male chimps than female humans. THESE ARE FACTS”, gender equality isn’t exactly looking at a genetic makeup of men and women and I don’t think chimpanzees have anything to do with this particular discussion. Humans may resemble chimpanzees genetically but we’re not chimpanzees so let’s just focus on one species. So, gender equality looks at men and women’s rights which SHOULD NOT be influenced by genetic makeup; that’s the whole point. Equal rights may be documented in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights but it doesn’t mean that everyone will follow it. It IS meant to be followed and yet some overlook it. You really mean to tell me that each and every person in this ‘developed world’ abides by the Declaration? Moreover, you say “Men and women already have equal rights in the developed world, and that world is working hard to get the rest of the world to join us in the 20th+ century”. You are right in that people are working hard to remind everyone that women DO HAVE equal rights and that women SHOULD BE TREATED LIKE THEY HAVE THESE RIGHTS. It is not about whether the genders are equal genetically or whether it has been established that women have equal rights, it is about each and every person, universally and unanimously, treating women equally - whether it is in the work field, education institutions or domestically. It is about doing it and not just establishing it. No developed or developing world has truly done that. In fact, just today I heard on the BBC radio station about how a woman was being abused in Brazil - this is just one of the many stories. Also, since gender equality is such a significant issue, it is part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations. If it wasn’t such an important issue, it would not have been a SDG. Furthermore, there ARE studies on the ‘pay gap’. Here is a list of scholarly articles that examine the gap. They may not be full articles but this proves that studies HAVE been done: scholar.google.com/scholar?q=studies+on+gender+pay+gap&hl=en&as_sdt=0&as_vis=1&oi=scholart&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiIqKCN_KzPAhVBn5QKHV9HBmMQgQMIHDAA. Here is an article by the BBC on the pay gap: www.bbc.com/news/uk-37460778. Here is an article by the Huffington Post on the existence of the wage gap www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/no-the-gender-pay-gap-isnt-a-myth-and-heres-why_us_5703cb8de4b0a06d5806e03f. These are just some examples. Also, I agree that feminists should also focus on social issues of men. I have already stated that in my previous comment. A lot of the social issues in this modern era focus more on women because, traditionally, men have been more dominant and have been the center of attention. Furthermore, when I said that sexual violence is to be treated as just that and nothing less, I meant that when such violence does occur, it is not to be taken lightly. You said that it depends on what you consider sexual violence. Considering something is very subjective and people may differ in their conclusions so people should not ‘consider’ but actually understand what sexual violence really is what the already established universal definition is. Here are two links that might help: www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/sexualviolence/definitions.html and www.nsvrc.org/sites/default/files/Publications_NSVRC_Factsheet_What-is-sexual-violence_1.pdf In all, it is not just me or women in general, but the UN, the World Bank, numerous scholars, educational institutions and many other credible people and institutions also believe that gender equality is yet to be achieved. Hmm, guess they’re all feminists too, huh?
@prapribera8 жыл бұрын
Then could you please tell me what a typical rape case is and what your definition of sexual violence is? Does the woman have to be conscious? Does she have to explicitly say 'No'? Hmm..you know the judge didn't give him a longer sentence because he thought the 14 year sentence would have a severe impact on the rapist. You could read more about this here: www.buzzfeed.com/katiejmbaker/heres-the-powerful-letter-the-stanford-victim-read-to-her-ra?.nn8aLjVzA#.gaa8KYOA9. Anyway, thank you for your input.

I don't think you guys understand. Your country isn't the only country in the world. She is not only talking about YOUR country she is talking about the world. Your country makes up a small percentage of the world. It doesn't matter if women give lectures at your university or generally have equality. There are countries out there where women can't go to school. Cant get an education. Yes there are countries out there that still believe that. These things are happening even if you can't see it. She isn't saying this stuff for herself. She is doing it for them. Men get let off on minuscule charges for rape. In some countries it just gets looked over. Just because these things don't exist where you are doesnt mean they aren't happening elsewhere. For those of you saying she is just some rich kid, who's gonna do this for her?

All these comments saying she is man-hater because she dare to talk about rape, look at the way they write those comments, they're full of hate, sorry but you are the one hating on her. Is strange that you people say women voices are already heard but all you're doing here is hate her because she is talking. You can call her man hater but the true is that I've never seen most hatefull comments like yours. So sorry dear anti feminist, but feminism is not going to end until you stop calling women sluts, whores and bitches. It's not like you have laws against horrible crimes like rape or violence and that's it, but to treat every person with respect no matter their gender and that means to stop with the sexually derogatory names, stop harassing underage girls in public, and you're right, there are laws against it, but that means nothing if we don't change our minset. And it's called feminism because it recognizes that women are the ones seen as inferior, or are you telling me that "manhood" has being represented as inferior? I've never heard anybody say "you're such a man" as an insult. And you are always using the "tie" to "win" an argument, if a feminist says women should be equal, you say "but all the men dying in war..." etc, etc, it's like you're saying she shoudn't talk about sexism because there are men dying, almost like "you should accept those insults, you deserve rape, don't complain because men are dying in wars" read these carefully, NOBODY is saying that men don't die in wars, that men don't suffer job accidents, all we say is women suffer from sexism much more than men and that's not ok, dying in wars is a consequence, when you go to war there's a 50/50 chance you're going to die, because wars are about that, the job accidents are companies responsibility, those happen to men and women everywhere, but killing women, taking advantage to rape them or harass them just because they are women is disguting. Also, you always talk about false rape accusations, and that's true, there are false accusations, but there are also false accusation of robbery, economic fraud, killing, etc, and they are a big damage to those people, that doesn't mean I'm not going to report a killer just because of the poor people suffering from false accusations. And sexism towards women has been in our societes for so long that it's obvious it's going to affect men at some point, why do you think men are called "pussies" if they show their emotions, if they cry, surely it's because being a man means to be inferior, right?, all those men commiting suicide because they didn't asked for help because they're supposed to be "men", it's just a sexist remark that acting otherwise is being feminine meaning you're weak, "don't act like a woman, you're a strong men", fathers loosing their kids because that's a woman's job. Also, it seems you only remember all those men suffering just when there is a feminist speaking up, which saddens me because it looks like you don't really care about veterans, men dying in wars, suicide, you just use them conveniently to silence every person who dares to speak about women's rights. Keep calling every woman a slut, a bitch, a whore, but then don't complain about those silly feminists.

***** you don't understand how the past affects our future and how its a habitual cycle and it keeps happening over and over again. The same thing with rape, and poverty . It's funny though because matriarchal societies have been proven to yield more successful results when it comes to the land and its people. They are directly correlated to their nations/countries flourishing and that makes sense since we are the givers of life and can sustain that life when men destroy and pillage. I'm not saying all men but we are still not equal at all---not nearly enough women in politics, we still view them as sole nurturers when men can nurture and take care of children too, more women are in poverty as well as children versus men. That needs to change, as well as the sexual violence and violence in general against women. That is why we need people like Emma Watson to shed light on issues of gender inequality because it is real. You just feel threatened by your ego and haven't done your proper research.

How sick have your minds been poisoned to? When will you realize that the reason this agenda title speaks for women and children is because men ALREADY have had this privilege and are still receiving this privilege far more than women and children to change the world. Equality has NOT been achieved, and a heartbreaking example is the comments here on this video. Shame on all of you, shame on how you blame a woman for standing up for the rights of women. It was not once said that men should be belittled or that they are not of equal worth to women. Women for the longest time have been placed underneath men by society, we have always been looked down on. She is a feminist, fighting for equality. The definition is all parties( in this case both genders ) receiving equal respect and equal opportunity to change the world, to make it a better place. Please, before you make a comment lashing out at her because she calls herself a feminist, ask yourself, "Am I really speaking from a perspective of equal respect?"

"experiences show that women can't run seminars" what? but half of my lecturers are women and I do Engineering which is stereotypically male? "in universties we are given the message that sexual violence isnt actually a form of violence" seriously what the fuck is she on about? that message isnt given anywhere in the UK, certainly not fucking universities, seriously what is she even talking about? "the university experience must tell people that the safety of women, minorities and anybody who might be vulnerable, that it is a right" everyone except me then? okayyyy... honestly, what is she talking about? I like her but I honestly don't get this speech, I feel like I'm missing a lottt of context or she isn't in reality right now.

I never think feminist is a negative word. This speech was great and the idea is also great. But I think the UN should give more chance to the women who live in the Asien countries and the Middle East to let them also stand in the stage to tell their stories and their inequality. Gender equality is really a long way to go. There are also many many places especially in the poor countries and the distance Land the people still think men is the main and the women must stay at home to cook to care about the children. Although it’s already 21 centuries, but we still need to admit that this voice this situation still exists... I hope that the UN can take action to this question but not just only give a speech. It doesn’t work when people don’t change the mind and the government doesn’t work to solve this problem. Everyone should have their chance their opportunity to get better, not only in the western countries.

I believe that Emma speaks to her aspirations for the world from a place of genuine vulnerability. She has invested who she is as a human being into what she advocates, and displays it with confidence; I could feel it in her speech. Truly an inspiration to young women everywhere.

Oh, and I suppose it makes much more sense for a man to dictate someone's future instead? This being spoken by a man, so I guess that makes sense. No one's telling you what to do. Gender equality is about having the same access to opportunities and basic rights. It's not that hard of a concept to grasp so I don't know why people are struggling with it so monumentally. Not to mention that her referral to rape on campus is both common, and looked upon in the wrong light just as frequently. I can't even count the amount of times I've seen or heard a story of a victim and the response has been "well, look at what she was wearing. she was basically asking for it" or "well what does she expect walking around at that time". Which, quite frankly and irrefutably, is disgusting. And how terrible is it that 11.2% of all students experience rape or sexual assault through physical force, violence, or incapacitation? Even with this, there are still the people who will stand by the man because the woman is somehow in the wrong. Anyone is free to their own self expression and if it shows their legs and some cleavage then how dare someone else put themselves on a pedestal to tell her that's not okay. Because a woman should not fear her safety, her rights, her alibi, and certainly not her life. The same goes for men who are also often victims- equality in every situation. In life, in general, in society, there should be no dictatorship, no superiority, and no inequality.

***** "Now they want their governments to enact laws to force men into marrying them" What laws are these that force men to marry women?
@BenDover-ij7yp7 жыл бұрын
Firstly, men and women do NOT have equal rights in the west. Women have more rights. Like reproductive rights, the right not to be discriminated against based on you gender. The right for your freedom and life in emergency situations (fire, natural disasters, wars) But there isn't a single right men have that women don't.
@bonjourmarlene7 жыл бұрын
When we as feminists talk about the want and need for equal rights, those things are included. It's just sad that that thought doesn't cross your mind. "The right not to be discriminated against based on your gender" can you show me and example or statistics where men have been discrimiated against because they were male? Some jobs are more female dominated, such as midwife or nurse, but why? - Because men get to do the "better job" and become a doctor. HOWEVER, they do have the chance to do the job, if that's what they want. A father should have equal say in reproductive rights and how many children he has. If you're in a relationship, then BOTH should decide how many kids you have, and not just the woman (assuming you're in a cis heterosexual relationship). That being said, a no weighs heavier than a yes. If a woman says she doesn't want another baby, that means a yes from the husband/boyfriend is worth less. Equally, if a man says he doesn't want another baby, that means a yes from the wife/girlfriend is worth less. By the way, the definition of reproductive rights is "Reproductive rights rest on the recognition of the basic right of all *couples* and *individuals* to decide freely and responsibly the number, spacing and timing of their children and to have the information and means to do so, and the right to attain the highest standard of sexual and reproductive health. They also include the right of all to make decisions concerning reproduction free of discrimination, coercion and violence" according to the WHO. It is not a right exclusive to women, everyone/every individual has this right. I want to fight against sexism especially in cases where it comes to children. I will strongly call myself a feminist, and for me that includes fighting for men's equal rights as well. I want fathers to have the equal rights for custody in their children, because some mothers are horrible. A lot of sexism towards men doing female dominated jobs often comes from a male community. A friend of mine is doing teacher training for primary school and it was his male friends who told him that's a job for girls. I know fathers who called their daughters "such a girl" for crying. I know fathers who called their sons "such a girl" for crying. We want feminism so that being a woman isn't a shameful or weak thing anymore, that people can express their emotions without being denounced as not manly enough or too girly, as if being a girl was such a bad thing. We want feminism so that men can spread out into female dominated jobs without being called a wimp or a loser for not getting a proper job. We want feminism so that men can care for their kids without being suspected as a kidnapper or inappropriate parent when out with their child alone.

1:21- What University says that? Who gives that message? The only place I see this said is during feminist speeches like this one. Now if she had said that Sharia Law doesn't view sexual violence against women as real violence then she might have a point. If she is going to make these kinds of statements and accusations then she needs to say who is actually doing it.

Why do people think she is a man hater? There is nothing in that speech that says that? This woman has an extreme passion for gender equality and is actually doing something about it! i admire that so much and it should inspire many more young people to fight for what they believe in. In no way is she saying that women are better than men. just because a woman stands up and asks for equality, some people instantly think she is dissing men. Far from it. People get your facts right and realise just how incredible this young woman is

Feminism means equality for both men and women, it does not mean that women should become more important than men. I have read a lot of comments referring to the inequality against men and I wholly agree with this, but they are using it as an argument against feminism, when feminism stands up for their rights too. I can guarantee that many of the people who are bringing up inequality against men are only doing so to argue against equal rights for women, but they will do nothing to change male inequality. All feminists want to do is bring about change, so that there are equal rights and opportunities for all men and women, and I do not understand why people are against this.

equal respect vs. simular respect... Dear Miss Watson, there was a german philosopher, round about 1800 in our western calender - I hope you're still here, but I have to admit : this 'letter' will be very theoretical. The name of this philosopher was Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel - not Walter, by the way ;-) He said that A Tree is simular to the Word tree. Its the so called 'Satz der Identität' A ist A! I now substitute the formular meaning of A (which is a word) to: Tree. The second A in this 'Satz der Identität' is the tree you can touch and smell und pick a green sheet off it. According to Hegel they - both A - are simular. They are identic, or to express it mathematically: kongruent... there is no difference between the word and the thing of a Tree or a house... in mankind the case lies a bit differnt. Evident: there is dignity and feedom in every single Human being. Which cannot be taken or given by another human. This dignety (Vernunft, or Würde des Menschen) cannot be compared to others it is: valuable in its infinity. every human is equal to another but not simular to another. There are differences BUT NOT IN THE VALUE of a single life.... maybe in the needs or desires between some group of people or in the sexes of Human mankind ... equal respect between man and woman... I'd loved to hear more"and I'm eager to hear what's next' thank you Ms. Watson... yours sincerel(l)y T.G. ;-)
