On DVD at BBCAmericaShop.com. Beautiful, clever, and rich Emma Woodhouse is convinced she is good at matchmaking after her older sister and her governess both marry suitable husbands. No matter that as Mr Knightley drily observes, in reality, she had nothing to do with these relationships. Yet Emma, certain of her talents, plays a dangerous game as she persuades her new friend, the young, pretty and socially inferior Harriet to reject an advantageous marriage proposal to a local farmer in favour of dashing Mr Elton. So begins a story which challenges Emma's naivety, her social preconceptions and her relationship with Knightley. Fresh and funny, this perceptive adaptation, featuring a stellar cast, brings Jane Austen's comic masterpiece to life.

It was kind of Emma not to pain Mr Weston by dwelling on Frank not being there.

I LOVE these movies! But, I must confess....I am intrigued by the characters. Especially when they speak of having such passion.....with such complete detachment. How is that possible? The men who have confessed love to me, have never been so detached.

At this period in history, the Enlightenment with all its emphasis of etiquette had reached a highpoint, and Romanticism was about to begin. This is the function of manners, to detach oneself from immediate stimulus-response to reasoning. This is why in a past era Kings taught the noblemen to use a fork; it makes them detached. For example, if someone insults you, you do not unsheathe your sword and lop off his head. Rather, you consider the person uncouth. If you read the books of Jane Austen, this detachment is even more pronounced. Frankly, since Romanticism of the 19th century, the pendulum has swung too far in society to self-expression. The difference now is that the grieved party uses a pistol. Georgia, go to the library and take out the BBC series, Emma. It is great fun!

@@MFM230 I agree that in modern times we live with too much self expression being put out there but there is no way I would want to live with the level of formality they had in regency times as it was too formal. Having to send appointment cards round just to have a cup of tea with them or bowing constantly may look romantic and nice on screen but in real life it's too much.

@@lepolhart3242 I agree completely? Have you read any Jane Austin novels? At first, I could not get through Emma because of all the formality. I have read several of them, but modern portrayals are much better because the formality is tamed down.

I find Emma's portrayal too modern. I still enjoyed the series, the story is so good, but I wish they were more accurate in the portrayal of the characters.

They are always going to be modern because they are made for us... and Garai portrays Emma wonderfully.

@@archie6945 I quite agree. To me, this adaptation is remarkably faithful to the spirit of the novel and on that basis gets my vote. Film making is a huge team effort.and the production team made excellent use of the time available in the long format of four episodes. To me, Romola Garai and Jonny Lee Miller are exceptionally good in their roles. Indeed, I think that all the performances were good.
