You definitely need to know how to maintain your bus. Check engine light could be anything. Find a good diesel mechanic not sure if auto zone would be able to take a reading with their computer.. Hope it's nothing big. Your bus is looking awesome.

Faulty gas cap can cause that , also have auto zone put a trouble checker gage on your bus for more suggestions .

I don't remember how old your bus is, but it has a computer I assume? There should be a port under the steering wheel to plug in a reader. My bluebird has a J1939 port, yours might be different. Buy a reader for less than $200 dollars, and it will tell you why the light is blinking. I checked a couple of shops, and it's $300 plus for them to check the codes. Crazy. If your bus is older, there will be a procedure you can follow to get the check engine light to blink in a sequence to tell you what's wrong. I learned all this on the interwebs, but if you're having trouble reply and I can find more specific info for your particular bus.

Do you have an Nexiq Bluelink Diagnostic fault reader? If not do you know how many pins your connection is? It was one of the best things we bought, we can look up codes and see if it is something we can fix ourselves, or do we need an actual mechanic.

That dripping you see under the bus might be power steering fluid. Whenever you're turning the wheel in this video you hear a whining noise. That usually means low fluid in the power steering pump. My Thomas Bus doesn't whine when turning the wheel so it's not something you should be hearing in your bus. p.s. congrats on finally getting out on the road!

Happy to see all went well as far as gas mileage driving around 55 will get you the best gas mileage but you don't have to drive back roads to get good gas mileage stopping and goes thru all the small towns at red-light will actually make gas mileage worse then driving 55 on the interstates. Also your so funny the whole time you where in your bus your nerves made it look like you were scared kind of like a criminal doing something wrong. Your in a bus not robbing a bank lol. You will be fine if you need to pull over for a few. No one is going to harass you or arrest you for taking a break on the side of the road as long as your in a safe spot out of the way of traffic. Relax, have fun, enjoy life, have great adventures and make wonderful memories. Best Wishes

Sometimes when your radiator overflow tank is low it will trigger the check engine light. Make sure you have enough coolant and antifreeze in the radiator. Also an oxygen sensor can be bad that will trigger the light. You did great. Thanks for sharing.

Check the dipstick, a lot of times the information is on it. I knew several truck drivers that would put a ratchet strap between the cab doors to keep anyone from getting in. A lot of vehicles use the same keys so there was a lot of them floating around. You might want to see if you have a mechanical gauge or an electrical gauge. It could be the sender.

great video Emma. When you're uncle looked over the bus, didn't he say anything about the warning light you were getting? I don't know about buses but cars generally get the best gas mileage between 55 and 65. You may want to try varying your speed to see when you do get the best mileage. So did your family tell you how proud they were of your accomplishments? I know if you were my sister/daughter/niece, etc I'd be proud of you. You've done such a great job and you've come such a long way since you began this project. Keep it up and I can't wait for the next video.

Great job Emma!!.. Word of caution though, maintenance and keeping on top of /fixing any minor problems is KEY! OTHERWISE you could have catastrophic failure from something that starts off or seems minor. Just a heads up. Maintenance is the most important thing of all tbh. And can also affect your mpg like if it needs a service or filters etc etc. Definitely get it checked out thoroughly. Engine lights could he electrical faults(which can cause fires!) Or just sensors, or could be something more serious. Regardless just get EVERYTHING checked over mechanically, then you've got peace if mind and all you have to do then is get it serviced regularly to keep it running and avoid issues! You can't negate all risk things will go wrong or break at some point but better maintained it is the better especially being a bus that's been well used! And that you're going to be putting a lot of miles on.. Good video though well done tackling your first drive alone!! Ps. Fuel here in England is More THAN DOUBLE/Almost TRIPLE the price you just paid!! You guys got it easy lol 😂🤦🏻 still 8-13mpg is a nightmare! All the best from London England looking forward to the next video! 👍 ❤️😎🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Good first shake down cruise. It's a learning process.
@googleuser6814
@googleuser6814 2 жыл бұрын
I was an owner operator truck driver for three years. Set the cruise at 54mph and never made eye contact with anyone passing. Made $20-25k/year more than other drivers. Fuel adds up. If you want to know your exact optimal cruise speed, you'll have to find the top of your torque curve for your motor and set cruise at that rpm in your highest gear. For example, my truck's motor torque curve topped out at 1106rpm, which equated to 54mph in 10th gear. Hence the 54mph cruise speed. Just go to Google and search the year and model of your engine. Google Images should show you the torque curve. It's prob somewhere around 1500rpm, And it will typically plateau for a few hundred rpms after it tops out. Then just cruise in your highest gear at the lowest rpm where the torque curve first tops out. Hope that made sense. Could save you some serious cash every year. Or just shoot for 50-60 and that'll be totally fine too. ....... Don't worry about what others think while you're driving. It's your journey. And I don't think any of the good humans have ever been mad at a slow RV or bus. Especially a skoolie. They're too busy snapping photos. :) Enjoy the ride.

Emma, get yourself the SERVICE MANUAL for your particular motor. They come in at about a hundred bucks. Worth it ! Bus company usually has only new ones for their new busses. Check with them anyway. Progress continues. Wonderful ! Your milage has a number of components, Your engine could have a governor or the gearing in the differential might be for hills and not cruising. You can check the casing of the differential for numbers. You can check these to get the gearing. It can be re-geared . If you can , get manuals for your engine and transmission . The bus manufacturer should also be able to supply a manual on the bus. They can all be helpful. It may be a calming thought to remember you are moving your entire house. I don't know if you are planning to tow you car or might consider a motor scooter you could put on a rear deck, to be used as alternative transportation. ( I do agree, fuel at present is too high. ) All the best, Hal I look forward to your next video .

Another word about your fuel mileage: nothing says that you have to drive long distances at freeway speeds every day. The schoolie life is about taking it easy, traveling a short ways every few days, and just absorbing your surroundings. It’s about slowing down, and chilling out. I highly recommend that you get a Harvest Hosts membership. With it you can camp for free at hundreds of farms, wineries, dairies, etc. all across the country. While camped at Harvest Hosts locations, you can, if you choose to, get involved with whatever they have going on there. It could be a great way to immerse yourself into the surroundings, risk free. Looking forward to watching the rest of your build and your future adventures. Love the color that you painted Birbie. I did want to give you some advice about your bus windows. You want to add curtains for privacy and you are just not there yet. In the mean time if you want privacy, you might think about tacking or taping up newspaper or black trash bags to the windows. You could have privacy on the cheap until you are ready for your curtains.

Not sur3 what Kind of bus you have but most diesels have a separate oil light. I have a much different bus but has a low oil light, a low coolant light and a high temp light. Try turning the switch on afterit has sat a while without cranking and see if you have a separate lite. dont start it, just turn the switch on and see what lights up.

For the curtains I've used $10 blankets. You can probably cut it half. So for fuel economy you'll need to see what your engine RPM is around 1400 and run at that speed. Typically best full is 60-65 mph. Blah blah physics stuff I can link. You can actually get worse fuel economy at lower speeds if your engine RPM is higher. Say 45mph vs 64

Older diesel motors with say 400,000 miles have a lot of piston wear. Rebuild is one option, expensive. Cheaper temporary solution use heavier weight oil, instead of 15-40 use 20-50, compensating for the wear.

Fuel is a killer right now. Have you considered biodiesel or an LPG conversion? Heck, the latter might actually be cost-effective to convert right now. I'm in the process of converting my car over to ethanol - I figure why deal with crazy gas prices if you don't have to. The first time you sleep in the middle of nowhere, isolated from everything and 'exposed' to everything, it is quite normal to feel a little paranoid... Camera not working, door not closing, engine check lights...I have absolutely no doubt you'll find a way (or someone) to figure these things out. My main concern ? The amount of dust lol, I felt like I was going to have a sneezing fit when seeing all the dust. Glad the trip went well, but I'm guessing the engine light was for the transmission fluid. Question : Is it safe to assume that driving that bus size is okay with a regular driver's license ? I would think it would require a different type of license but maybe not.

This might sound silly but if you google you’ll know it’s not. Catalytic converters are being stolen everywhere, 18 school busses in one night, it’s getting crazy, consider getting a large metal sheet and screw it with a ton of screws to cover your catalytic converter. It contains precious metals, and it’s expensive to replace.

Not sure on bus, but on cars, generally you check the transmission fluid while the engine is running in park. Checking it while off, may cause you to overfill which may be while you're seeing drips.... As it's coming out the vent tube from being over full. Engine oil you check always with the engine off. Don't forget your water level, power steering fluid and brakes if they are not air. Not to mention an exterior wall around to check lights, and tire pressures.

Just found your web site. Your bus should have OBD II/on board diagnostics two, all modern cars have OBD II also. Search your issue on KZbin. I just say a number of solutions to read the trouble codes in the computer, they are stored there when the check engine light comes on. There is also a plug for attaching a Code Reader, this will tell you the number of the trouble code and what is/could be the issue. You can buy a code reader on line, relatively inexpensive. I did not read fully any of the KZbin videos, it looks like you can read the codes directly from pushing certain buttons on the dash board. You should be able to find help on KZbin, there are others who have had similar issued and have posted solutions. You can also find help, Google what issues you have and there should be help there. The trouble codes are "usually" accurate, but sometimes they can be misleading. A code will tell you that a certain part is the issue, you replace that part, to find after you do it does not fix the code/issue. Hope this helps.

Check the overflow tank for the radiator, if water/anti-freeze is not between the cold and hot marks it will trip a check engine light, there is a sensor to do that. My Mack tractor I drove pulling tank semi-trailers, would show a check engine light when that tank got low. "Do Not" ever take the radiator cap off when your engine is hot, anti freeze will come out and burn you. It is safe to remove the cap on the over flow tank, do it slowly and to make sure there is no pressure when you slowly open it. If it is low put a 50/50-water/antifreeze solution in to get the level up.

I went through and cut back all the hoses and used dielectric grease to keep the coolant from soaking into the hose and making future leaks. I reinstalled all the o rings on hard line sections at the engine. Then replaced the thermostats and gasket. The heaters were the gnarliest because the pipe nipples are copper and more corrosive. They're also super fragile but that's where I found the biggest leaks. That sucks because they're deep in the body. The coolant reservoir on a diesel actually serves as a condenser and is not just a reservoir. The entire coolant system has to hold pressure so that the very hot coolant returning to the reservoir can turn from vapors back into liquid and the hot liquid to shrink as it cools. Diesels operate at a higher temperature than gasoline engines to properly burn the fuel and fully combust. You won't run efficiently until you can hold coolant without leaking. You can find the leaks with uv dye and find them It seems like impossible to find all of the leaks but it's not. You just have to get in there and cut back the hose if it's still good or just replace it with new hose. I just did them all because every single one was leaking. You have to drain and contain all the coolant. clean the fittings really well with scotch rite or wire brush. Your sensor is probably going off because the tank drops below the coolant level sometimes at higher rpm and when starting. You should be able to see all the lights on the dash when you turn the key so if there's an oil warning light or pressure you'll see a symbol or word illuminated. Maybe your bus doesn't even have those. It sucks to have to do all that work, but that's just the way diesels are, and heater cores. They all leak every single damn fitting leaks.

Back when I was a school bus driver there was a handle on the right side of me with a rod connecting to the front door . Maybe you could find a used a used one . Or take the front door off and put an RV door there. Since you're concerned about gas mileage, wouldn't it be cool to transform your bus into a hybrid electric diesel bus ? We have some hybrid buses where I used to work. It would take a lot of mechanical know how, and expense. Maybe stick the electric motor under the back, with extra batteries under your bed.

Yeh, tell me about it my bus has a 130gal fuel tank and with the price getting over $5 a gallon you need a really good credit card to fill up.

If I was your Dad I would have been glued to your bumper on your first long trip! Is there some kind of roadside assistance for buses? I imagine so, perhaps you could buy a cheap scanner to see what codes are being thrown up? Assuming old buses have that... I always carry a secret stash of cash on journeys too

Just a tip if you still have them, I had those plastic 3 drawer things in my van. Best way to secure them for drives is to turn them backwards and secure them with a bungee cord. Unless you have something very strong, high and hard to tip or move the top and maybe middle drawer will still fly out and throw the items every where 💚

Maybe you should better really secure your kitchen as well, so the stuff does not fly forward when you have to do an emergency stop! Please consider, that as a rule of thumb, everything that would fall down if you'd put the bus vertically on its front side, can move just by using the brakes. If you get into an accident and, say, hit something, you may even decelerate stronger and the forces could even get much higher. So it is absolutely necessary to secure everything really well to keep you safe from that!
