Emma A wonderful video on practical use of value in pastel painting! Thank you for continuing to educate and enlighten your viewers on how they can make their own paintings better! I believe this has practical value in any artwork creation if it is simply adjusted to any medium an artist is using at any time.

Thank you! The colour theory series definitely can be for any medium. But it's extra lovely using pastel to demo these things! A rainbow of colour ready to go :-)

Hi Emma, just popped onto your website and read through your blog on the panoramic landscape of Mussenden (hope I spelled that correctly) Temple sunset or sunrise. STUNNING! it made me have to catch my breath. In the final pic on the blog you are holding up the pic and I sense you are pleased with it…I hope you are, as one busy pastel portrait artist to another, I find your work ethic, excellent tutorials and, of course, your brilliant art inspirational….You make me get off my backside to work in my little studio. Just to add, I think this painting is your “Dark Side of the Moon”…or “Gone with the Wind”…or “Starry Starry Night”….it’s epic, it’s perfect and I’m totally in love with it. I’m going to keep an eye out for the limited edition giclee and buy it…Sorry if this post is a bit much but you’ve blown me away with this painting, I only hope that one day I can cause somebody to react the same way…God bless…Jim

Jim that's very kind of you thank you! It's a very nice comment to receive and to know someone thinks that of your painting. I was very pleased with this one, but it's always hard to be objective with your own work and normally I'm just happy to be finished and onto the next one so I don't give them a lot of thought! Really appreciate your comment :-)

@@EmmaColbertArt haha!…totally understand that. I find that I don’t like my paintings when the struggle is over, but I photograph them all and when I come back to them weeks later I start to like them. Well done Emma it’s a glorious painting

I’m colourblind and started watch your videos to try and help me with my sewing ( clothes and quilts) and my future wish to paint/draw landscapes. I have quite ‘severe’ green red and blue purple colourblindness. This video has helped me understand I rely mostly on TONE. So easy to understand with this grey scale description. I don’t see in grey but I wonder how close it is to that. And I’ve been compensating.

My latest quilt I used the same brand fabric as recommended and I have trouble distinguishing the patterns, I understand now why. It’s pink yellow and green but I suspect now that the tones are the same value and I have trouble distinguishing the intricate patterns.

@@trebledown6713Interesting. They’ve gone with a triad (if the green is bluish) or perhaps a split complementary (if the yellow and pink are closer in shade) colour scheme, without using values. I don’t quilt but I love looking at them and would love to be able to afford to buy some one day. The quilts I see as most successful all use tone as well as colour to create the design - pink (red) and green are opposites so maybe a deep neutral green and pale coral pink with yellow as the mid tone for a more unified scheme. Or perhaps a bright pink and green (which should automatically make the green slightly darker in value) with pale yellow for a triadic colour scheme. Just my 2c, while I struggle with transferring the colour theory I understand well in watercolour to the way more complicated use of colour theory in pastels. By the way, bonus points for picking pastel artists to learn colour theory - they do it better than anyone!

@@trebledown6713 you’re very welcome. Given that you’re colourblind, it might be worth taking recommendations with a grain or two of salt and developing your own sense of colour/value rather than relying on the usual prescriptions. One thing I would do, if you’re interested in colour theory is map out which colours you see on a detailed colour wheel (one with all the tonal values as well) and which are your “blind spots”. Then you can choose whether to focus on the colours as they appear to us all or whether to experiment with the unknown.

Thank you so much for another fantastic video! I once heard " Tone does all the work but colour gets all the credit" and that has stayed w me. I am very new to soft pastels and your advice in invaluable, it can also be applied to other art materials. I once did a leaf in watercolour but it was only when I dared to go very, very dark in some places it suddenly came "alive".
@EmmaColbertArt
@EmmaColbertArt 3 жыл бұрын
I love that, so true! Tone is so important. Like I said it's the first thing I think about before anything to do with colour and it is often overlooked. I feel repetitive in my tutorials sometimes saying, you need to go darker in the beginning than you think. The contrast needs to be there!
@SUSSDUE

@@EmmaColbertArt I think good advice can never be repeated too much, so you do right to stress tonal values and contrast! Thanks again for helping us so much!!

As a graphite artist, I understand values, but I'm having a hard time seeing all the values in pastels. I'm having to learn them by photographing in grayscale and comparing. Yikes! Love your videos! Thank you.
@EmmaColbertArt
@EmmaColbertArt Жыл бұрын
That's a great way to learn to recognise their values! I often recommend grayscaling things to compare. Takes the colour out of the equation for a second. Keep going with colour, it's a journey!
