I love this bag. I know it's not what it's intended for but I really want to make one to be used as a thread and scrap holder when I go to my Australian Sewing Guild meetings. We meet at the local Church hall and there aren't any rubbish bins to throw your thread snips and scraps into before you go home. I have an open thread snip container but then the threads fall out all over my sewing bag when going home. A little bag like this that can be opened out, sit by itself to collect all the threads etc and then can be pulled closed to keep the scraps etc in would be great and so pretty on the table. I'm going to make one for sure. I loved this video.

@@lorraineknox7695 I did some research into your suggestion and over all it has been said it's a bad idea because of threads getting tangled onto small chicks legs etc. Sorry, seemed a good idea at the time but I won't do it.

What a lovely idea for this bag--to keep thread snips. I have a tiny bag I keep my thread snips in when I'm out and about, a bigger one would be helpful.

What a lovely project! It’s beautiful. I always use a scrap of fabric (a thread bunny) to start each piece of sewing. It stops threads being pulled into the machine and also your precious fabric which is more likely to happen when it’s very fine like tana lawn. Works a treat!

Awww, I LOVE this little bag!!! It would be perfect for keeping your wool in when knitting or crocheting, as you suggested. It's a great way to use up blocks you might make just for learning purposes, to see which blocks you like before committing to a quilt. But honestly, even just squares of nice fabrics would be beautiful for this - I just love the tabs and the substantial ribbon. Thank you so much for this tutorial, Emma, and all your tips. Oh, about joining quilt as you go hexagons for an actual quilt... I was thinking of using ladder stitch so as to keep the back absolutely smooth, so your tip about using stronger thread and keeping the stitches small was very helpful to me. I just wondered if I should use cotton thread to join? Do you have any advice on this? I got a spool of Aurifil mako 50w cotton, but it's very thin and easy to snap - am I right in thinking this woukd be too weak to join my hexies? (Though it's lovely for handstitching the bindings.) Unless I use it doubled?? Thanks again for all you do, Emma❤
@emmajonesvintagesewingbox
@emmajonesvintagesewingbox 5 ай бұрын
thank you so much! so glad you liked the video. I have tried joining with thinner thread and I honestly think something thicker is best. You have to pull the thread for ladder stitch so I find it can snap easily. Try something like aurifil 12wt, I find it works well for this purpose x
@craftdipper
@craftdipper 5 ай бұрын
@@emmajonesvintagesewingbox thanks so much for answering, Emma. I value your advice. I'll look for that 12w thread. Thank you! A quilt as you go quilt is certainly a longterm project, but the benefit I'm finding is that I can buy smallish amounts of fabric at a time as I can afford it. And with fabrics like Tilda and Liberty I'll always get something that tones, even if a design goes out of production. 😍
