I know you read these kinds of comments all the time, but I have to throw my thoughts into the mix. Background: I maintained all my life that I lacked artistic ability. I know my strengths. I have gazed upon great works of art in France and Italy and simply snickered, “He’s naked!” when I came across the actual statue of David. I was 25. I tilted my head at the Mona Lisa and even paintings by Monet which I liked and thought, “I don’t get it.” Shortly after that Europe trip, I married, continued my career as a school counselor, popped out four babies, and then I blinked and my personal landscape changed. I was suddenly sitting at my retirement party, my kids were grown save for my caboose who was a senior. I was (am) 56 years old and had NO idea what I was going to do when I grew up. My youngest registered for an art class WAY over his head so I decided to go through the journey with him. I dug out some Prang watercolors and some brushes around the house and bought some crappy watercolor paper (I’ve since repented) and lost myself on Pinterest and KZbin. I found someone I liked and sent photos of my awful first paintings to my daughter who is across the country going to law school. She sent me some of hers and I was amazed. She told me takes her lessons from Emma LeFabvre. So I looked. I looked for hours and hours. And hours. I have not yet painted my masterpiece but I’m impressing people with some of my paintings. None of them are artists, of course, but I’m improving. My point is this: I’ve spent A LOT of time learning from artists on KZbin and Pinterest and Instagram. There are some great artists that I followed along and came out with a painting that looked NOTHING like it was intended. There are artists that describe what they are doing and there are artists that know their audience and teach to us. You (and Jenna Rainey) know how to teach. You are very real and I LOVE that. I love that your paintings aren’t perfect in your eyes but you forge ahead. The fact that you are willing to play with pigments, water, and ideas without fear lessens the intimidation I feel every time I sit down to follow a video or try painting something that I know. Every single video has taught me something I didn’t know, explained something that made a lightbulb go off in my head (chickens’ necks are cones), and inspired me to just keep painting. I feel like I’m sitting and painting with a friend. Who casually mentions that if I add purple to green, it becomes a richer and deeper green. Huh. Thank you. Keep doing what hat you are doing. Keep teaching. Keep explaining. Keep posting videos that you don’t love because I do. That’s what sets you apart. And I’ve now invested at least a couple hundred dollars into this endeavor (mostly cotton paper) and occasionally, my 17 year old son joins me. Turns out, he’s more artistic than I knew. But as for me, I need sit and paint with my artistic friend, Emma. Because I love the fact that she is a mother, a wife, a business owner, an artist, etc. and is juggling it all just like her audience. You get headaches, your baby spits up on you, kids are playing outside at the park, life is happening and yet you paint. And so will I.

Yes! Thank you for putting into words which I could not! I too, have recently retired and am on the same artistic journey myself. Not a great artist yet, may never be, but surprising myself! I also am very happy to have Emma, Jenna, Diane Antone, Karen Rice, Julia Lis, plus too many to mention, but to name a few, which have made me begin to appreciate my endeavors. Everything you have said about Emma is why I love her too! Keep up the good work Nancy, and as Sarah Cray on Let's Make Art says, "be kind to yourself, don't compare, and have fun!"

Nancy, I too follow Emma and Jenna Rainey. Love them both for their specific style of teaching and encouragement. Both are very down to earth in their ability to communicate to their audience.

The magic eraser really works! It's a miracle worker!

The magic eraser really does work, but make sure it is the Mr. Clean brand. Other brands are similar but may not work due to different components in the cleaner.

I would so love to sit next to you with watercolors and Starbucks and just soak up your craftiness!! I’ve followed you for quite some time! My water coloring is all self taught and is used in cardmaking. When lifting doesn’t work, a TOMBOW MONO SAND ERASER works for me especially since I use cold pressed paper which you know is textured but gentle pressure and using one has never failed me!

I definitely need some P. H. Martin's, it's so versatile. 😊 The ghost of the purple leaf actually looks like a bud of the flowers opposite it! 😁

Thank you, especially about the Dr. Martin's trick. I used it the other day for that reason and felt guilty, but seeing you do it, took the pressure off !

Yes, magic eraser sometimes works. I'm glad you used bleed proof white, too 😊. (Feels like cheeting 🤭) you can even carefully painting over it

Using your tools is not cheating! It is your painting and you can do it any way that you choose! IMHO.

TY for this video and ALL your videos - I am really enjoying them and learning a lot, and a big source of my journey has been your approachable videos and positive attitude. I love the keeping' it real baby drool ' - because it show us to make art fit in to our lives and not wait for the perfect time with a chunk of hours we never seem to find. I have a quick question.. Does the ability to lift paint change depending on paper brand and type?
@ninetteburns3258
@ninetteburns3258 Жыл бұрын
I am not Emma, but the answer is yes. The paper does make a difference due to composition (pulp or cotton) and sizing used in the manufacture. I am sure there are others, but I stick to Arches because it is more available where I live.

Mistakes on poor quality paper are definitely not lifting well, but on decent paper these techniques work well.

Great short video. When using Dr Martin bleed proof, do you use it right from the jar with a wet brush.?
