Entourage was a show about Hollywood and also about male friendships. It was accurate to the time, and there was a lot of misogyny at that time just like there is in Hollywood now. People love to watch shows about serial killers and drug dealers but misogyny in a show is where they want to draw the line lol. Accept the show for what it was.
@taraz6786 Жыл бұрын
Nobody’s saying that, it’s the denial of the misogyny that’s irksome. You’re right, certain parts were emblematic of those times, but there was also rampant misogyny and both those things are not mutually exclusive.
@Skoora Жыл бұрын
Just because a show shows misogyny, doesn’t mean it is a misogynistic show. It would be like saying Criminal minds endorses being a serial killer. Also those guys took so many career hits and problems, especially Johnny that it didn’t make out like they were crushing it. So a rich, famous, handsome man has women who want to screw him, probably hoping to get something out of it for themselves, with no coercion, no promises, just hooking up and it’s misogynist? Ari Gold crucified anyone and anything in his path. An equal opportunity asshole. Also one of the most entertaining characters ever put on TV. A regular Guy posts a simple but informative video on how to install some shelves in a bathroom. Gets 11K views. An attractive woman, or at least one with either big tits or a big ass posts a similar video, making sure the thumbnail either has her tits or ass prominently in frame. 1.2 M views. Now, who is the societal cancer here? The men falling over themselves to see the goods or the woman who knowingly used her body in an exhibitionist manner to gain income or notoriety? We want to condemn sexual dynamics between Men and women because of a perceived power imbalance but who holds the real power? Like she said in the vid. What was in the show pales compared to the real life stuff. I guarantee, right now in 2023 there’s young, beautiful women lining up to screw some rich, famous guy for fun, for gain for whatever and they don’t have a career killing gun to their head. It’s not like there aren’t powerful Hollywood women who take advantage of male or female underlings or wannabe’s as well.
@taraz6786 Жыл бұрын
@@Skoora So I have no problem with the sexual element, that was tame in comparison to what was happening irl and yes men can be misogynistic when talking about women they perceive to be a certain way. It’s just interesting that they act that way but then are also desperate to sleep with them, I’ve always found that to be a weird contradiction that reeks of self loathing. It’s like they can only see women who actually want to sleep with them as inferior, which I find hilarious. 😂 Regardless your understanding of power is a touch skewed because objectification and hyper sexualization are not really inherently seen as power moves, not for us women anyway because it’s merely just free porn for men. Frankly it merely serves to create a culture of porn addiction, self loathing in men who have trouble with women or who cannot compete with other men, rape culture, trafficking because being sold into sex work has become alarmingly high, not to mention the increasing amount of porn actresses detailing horrific abuse they suffered. The women you’re talking about, the groupies are a niche group and they do not represent the majority of women globally. So yes they exist, nobody’s denying that, but even then nobody is holding a gun to anybody’s head or coercing them, so to a point, I can understand why that is acceptable, it’s consensual. But the power dynamic is never truly in the woman’s hand. I mean, maybe if we lived in a vacuum, where certain men didn’t feel like they were entitled to sex and women’s bodies & weren’t rapists, abusers, stalkers, kidnappers, traffickers, serial killers etc etc, I could unfortunately go on, because men don’t tend to be respectful or well, sane as you will often see in the comments of those vids you mention. I mean really, the vile hatred men seem to have for the women they jerk off to, is beyond reprehensible and inhumane, and this will affect the woman because she is of course, lo and behold, a human being and not a robot. Her job shouldn’t deny her basic dignity and empathy. 🙄 You seem to be stuck on the women who are having sex with powerful men, but even then, how many times has that turned sour for the women and I’m taking about the matter of safety because that’s never guaranteed, so no the disparity is actually extremely wide and more often than not, tipped in the man’s favour. You just have to look at the world around you to truly understand that.
@Skoora Жыл бұрын
@@taraz6786 you’re talking societal generalities. I was talking in regards to Entourage and the world it portrayed as it was what considered misogynistic. Hollywood society is niche. But similar atmosphere may or may not exist in any entertainment or high society culture, such as New York theater or the Nashville music industry.
@mackstacks8913 Жыл бұрын
@@taraz6786 who denied the misogyny tho? Shes saying in this exact interview that the show was misogynistic but was real and was very tame compared to what was actually happening. The truth of the matter is people go back and look at content with different lenses to feel morally superior or to show some form of enlightenment. Thats fine sure and some content we shouldn’t advocate as being good and Yes a lot of entourage was problematic but it is not nearly as harmful as some of the other things we tolerate from other shows especially prestige ones.

Yes, it's misogynistic. And that means, at least in that respect, it was an accurate portrayal of that place at that point in time. If it wasn't misogynistic, then people will say that "it covers up a lot of the scummy sexist things that were actually going on at that time". Or it paints an overly-positive picture of what was, in that time, a very misogynistic culture, etc. etc.

How, exactly, was Entourage misogynistic? It was a show about dumb Hollywood people. Vince was a dope with looks and money, Turtle was a mooch, Drama was a washed up has-been, and Eric was responsible for being the brain for the four of them since the other three were just morons. the women in the series used the men as much as the men used them, and Ari was CONSTANTLY being thwarted by his female counterparts, including his wife who owned his pathetic ass. to call that show misogynistic is just ridiculous.

Entourage was a great show. I don't care what anyone says. People are just inventing reasons to be "upset" anymore. Also: THIS is the definition of Misogyny. Dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women. There was NONE of that on the show. I'd say it was the exact opposite.
@taraz6786 Жыл бұрын
Misogyny takes different forms, the hyper sexualization and objectification of women, gratuitous nudity, the lack of nuanced and well written female characters etc etc, so it is a touch ignorant and frankly entitled to only notice one facet of misogyny and disregard the countless other forms of it.
@taraz6786 Жыл бұрын
@@daniels.1746 Dude it’s about context. The constant objectification and sexualization isn’t about women’s autonomy or power, it’s all about the male gaze & the woman is entirely removed from it. Acting like that is not the case is ignorant and peak misogyny.
