I didn’t cry, but I was actually shaking while watching it. I’ve been a STAR WARS fan since day one back in 1977 and while I have enjoyed pretty much everything to some extent, I haven’t felt this sort of tension since first watching The Empire Strikes Back in the theater as a child.

I love how "CLIMB!" has become a motif for Cassian. It's what K2-SO says to him and Jyn right before he dies, when they need to climb the communications tower to get the Death Star Plans. It's what Nemik tells him right before he dies, as they're leaving Aldhani. It's what Kino yells to the prisoners as they're escaping, potentially before he died on the prison.

I think Kino was aware from the start that there was a high chance their escape attempt would involve swimming and he was screwed. That's why he struggled to give his speech at first and why he emphasized the fact that he was working under the impression that he was already dead.

Don't apologize for the show of emotion, we all felt it too. The acting, writing, music, camera work are all designed to get that emotional gut punch at the end. 😢

This is Star Wars for adults - meaning its got heavy themes, a morose atmosphere, and a lot of spy intrigue and high drama and high stakes with human characters without Force powers or lightsabers, and its very down to earth and relateable - something Star Wars really needed to add to its already large and diverse storytelling styles, and the franchise and the fans are better for it. Tony Gilroy is such a gifted writer, producer, director, Im so glad they hired him. I think he and Dave Filoni should collab on something, and the fans wouldnt even care what kindof story it was, because with those two names behind it, it can be sure to be amazing! Here's hoping!

That would actually be a really interesting dynamic bc they have near opposite sensibilities. Filoni is largely geared towards kid-friendly high fantasy adventure (which is what a lot of adults didnt enjoy about Ahsoka; it really is just a live action version of the tone of Clone Wars or Rebels, which feels kinda awkward). Gilroy's style is more about character drama with realistic people & scenarios, building tension while respecting the audience, which some Star Wars fans didnt expect from Andor.

You're not alone with crying this much, for sure! I cried from Kino's speech and pretty much onward. Kino's speech hurts so much because there's a couple ways to look at it. One of them is that he did all of this, just to make it to the end, and find that he's still trapped because he can't swim. Another is that he realized the whole time that he was never going to make it out, but he led the revolt anyway because he knew he needed to give everyone else a fighting chance. Either way is equally heartbreaking.

Another great episode. Andor once again proves that a good script, great dialogue, well-constructed characters acted with strength and passion is more powerful and convincing than an array of effects and battles. This is the best Star Wars I've seen. Some may not like it but to say it's bad is trying to cover the sun with a finger.
@hackapump
@hackapump Жыл бұрын
The theme of this episode was sacrifice for an end you will not be able to enjoy yourself, as expressed in Luthen’s speech. And as others have pointed out, clearly Kino must have known all along that he would be stuck on that ledge. Meaning that everything he did, he did for the others. Which of course makes it all the more heartbreaking to see him stranded on that ledge.

It's no coincidence the episode ends with that speech about planting a tree you'll never live to see. Kino said right at the beginning "I'm already dead." While he was telling everyone to get on the tables, he just stood there ready to die. I don't think he planned to live long enough to give a speech, let alone taste fresh air. And I love that when he didn't have any words, he used the ones Andor gave him. It shows that Andor's becoming a rebel instead of just a survivor.

Having said that i feel like this episode really brought out even bigger guns in terms of the score, bringing the whole episode to the next level. Composer Nicholas Britell who honestly was a complete unknown to me before this has managed to capture a unique sound that still fits the Star Wars universe. Same as the whole show infact, it is unique within Star Wars but still feels like it perfectly belongs.

Unless you have a condition preventing it I strongly recommend learning to swim. It can be life saving and is a great workout option regardless of fitness level. Then learn rescue swimming so that you may help someone in an emergency. Here in Sweden we learn swimming in school, so most people can swim, except many immigrants. My school even taught basic rescue swimming to everybody and I really appreciate having the skill.

I don't think Cassian and Melshi are the only survivors but it's just that A) people escaped from the prison swimming in completely different directions and B) even if they ended up on the same shore, many would have decided to go their own way rather than stay together (who knows which strategy is better though). I imagine some reunions will happen in either the last two episodes of season one or sometime in season two, including the possibility of Kino and Cassian.

People keep saying this, but there’s a difference between thrown into a 10 foot deep pool with an instructor present a safety a few feet away. And jumping sever floors down into an ocean where shore is out of sight and you’re surrounded by the chaos of many swimming people. It’s clearly implied Kino had no good option. He can’t just “learn” on the spot.

The show started off great, but keeps reaching new levels of intensity, complexity, and emotion. The focus of this episode was the prison break for sure, and it was great, but Luthen's monologue at the end is what really stuck with me, and Mon Mothma's scene was fantastic. All three of the central characters in those stories are being pushed to sacrifice themselves in some way. Kino, though you don't realize it at the time, knows that the "one way out" for him will probably still lead to death, so it's hard for him to rally everyone else because there's not much in it for him. But he accepts that he may have to die to save everyone else. I don't think whether he lived or died is really important, because he made the sacrifice either way. Mon Mothma is going to have to let her feelings go, and risk her daughter entering into an arranged marriage just like she was, to keep the Rebellion alive. It's a small sacrifice to me, but possibly making your daughter hate you forever is a huge sacrifice to a mother. Luthen seems manipulative in that scene, until he bares his soul to Lonni about his sacrifice - his soul. He has no life, no distractions to keep him sane or happy. He has no relationships, no moment of rest. He hates himself for the things he feels he has to do and he won't be known when the history books are written, most likely. He really has sacrificed everything, just for what he believes will make the Galaxy a better place one day, after he's gone.

@emme, 2:07 Power. The Empire peddles in fear. This is just another power play, like using fear of the electrified floor, armed guards and the guards electrified sticks to stir fear in prisoners work production. Of course we shouldn't forget this episode's title as it is very like another reason, "On Way Out." 2:28 Exactly! 3:10 Indeed. We have to consider what's happened last episode and what was confirmed then and now. When they killed 100 men, the system suffered some sort of malfunction--they lost power for a few seconds. Does that facility have the ability to use that much power repeatedly? Can it do multiple floors if needed? The insulated boots worn at arrival appear to have been just for show, as we later see the guards on the upper floors not wearing them in later episodes like this one and the one before it. My guess is the electrified floors are only the arrival area and the prisoners workstations and quarters only--remember fear is how they keep control. They establish pain and fear at the beginning and by punishing a team several times a day, reminding the prisoners that they can shock them at any moment. The Empire has established fear and instilled fear--they don't need to electrify all floors, just the ones that really matter. 4:36 EXACTLY! If the Empire told them that they'd never get out and that they'd die in confinement, do you think they'd work? The prisoners already know that if they work the hardest that their food will have flavor and that those that work the least get tasteless mush. The Empire needs to keep appearances up to finish their precious Death Star with slave labor. 4:42 Not for nothing, for the Death Star! That's their ultimate weapon designed to instill fear across the galaxy. Submit to the Empire or have your world destroyed. 7:38 She's not doing what she's doing for money, though. She has the money! Since the Empire is watching all accounts, she needs to make it look like she hasn't been using her money. Large sums of money moving and nothing to show for it looks suspicious. She's doing what she's doing to help fund the rebellion which she hopes will free all people from Imperial oppression. I don't doubt that Mon Mothma loves her daughter Leida, but when you consider what's on the line, I wouldn't be surprised if she does in the end. When you think about it, as messed up as it sounds, Davo Skuldun might be the safest place for her daughter actually. Perrin, Mon Mothma's husband is a jerk. He disapproves of Mon Mothma's politics, as he doesn't care about others, just himself. He seeks to enrich himself like many others on Coruscant. He doesn't see anything wrong with what the Empire is doing because the Empire isn't oppressing him. Mon Mothma's marriage to Perrin isn't one out of love, but tradition. I don't know if I'd say she hates her husband, but I'm sure their marriage is complicated--we've seen him at least once give up what he wanted for something she wanted, so he isn't a total dick...just 3/4 one =/ That said, I think Perrin is using Leida to spy on Mon Mothma, which would explain why she's always nervous in Mon Mothma's presence during parties--I think Leida's trying to tell her mother WITHOUT telling her mother, but Mon Mothma has so much on her plate that she's dismissing her daughter's attitude as moody teen behavior. Anyway, Perrin wants more power and the only way this non-politician is going to get it is to offer the Empire something. Handing over the leader of the Rebellion would be quite a get...he'll likely earn that other 1/4 before the series ends. 12:07 This seems to be a new prison. The guards gave a speech about this prison being different from prisons they might know about when Cassian arrived, remember? Rogue One showed us a prison that looks more like something we would see in the real world, and if I'm not mistaken, Jyn Erso's cellmate was an alien man. I'm not sure why this prison didn't mix the sexes, as it's an automatic fry if two people step into the same quarters. 16:53 The tables have turned. 5,000 inmates have more power than 108 guards. The inmates are also armed and in control of the prison, as Kino said. 17:50 His speech likely saves his own life. Kino inspired his brothers to leave their cells and to help one another, and we saw them doing that. Someone's got to help him too, right? At the very least, you'd think his opposite the nightshift manger, who we see a couple of times during the prison break, would help him out or someone else from the fifth floor. I find it hard to believe that they'd just leave him or anyone else who couldn't swim. The hard part of course is making it to land and then off world! 19:26 EXACTLY! Sacrifice the pawn, bishop, rook or whatever to get the queen! Luthen plays to win. This is the side of the Rebellion we never got to see. We saw them as heroes, which they were, but they were also terrorist. They used gorilla style warfare on the ruling government, and they did this to make others suffer so that the government would overact. 20:05 this planet looks a lot like Kenari, Cassian's home. The Empire robed the world of its resources, killing all life and then turned the world into a penal planet. Nice reaction. This episode hit everyone, don't feel bad. This series has excellent writing and acting--not just the actors we know either, but everyone! Sorry for the essay m(_ _)m

I’m guessing once they all got to land, the prisoners split up. If they’re all scattered it’ll be harder to catch them.

Well if this doesn't make you want to learn to swim nothing will. You never know when it might come in handy.

I'm gonna assume that prisoners are separated by gender and species. Notice how we haven't seen a single alien in this prison either, not once in all 3 episodes?

One of the greatest eepisodes in the Star Wars saga (series or movie) in my opinion. Your reaction was spot on! P.S. It's never too late to learn to swim! (Palpatine: DO ittttttt... 😉)

"Get wrecked." "Stinky man!" "Did they swim for college?"😂 In seriousness, such a thoughtful reaction. Some reactors just don't get the little things and the weight of the moments, but you totally do. Keep it up!

If you watch the end credits, the guy who does the “on program” announcements is listed as the voice of god. 😀 But I think you are right. He isn’t famous as far as I know.
