Honestly, Series 1 of Torchwood has a lot of dud episodes for me. It seems the writers took 'do what you can't on DW' as sex and gore. Episodes like this and Countryside, where the episode themes are so incredibly dark to the point where they wouldn't even fit into Doctor Who, are the highlights of Series 1 imo. Doctor Who has never been about sex and gore, but it's done dark stories before, and the Torchwood episodes that go further with that concept are incredible.

Fun Fact: Louise Delamere (who played Diane) and David Tennant became really close friends while in drama school together in their late teens/early 20s and even shared a flat together (owned by Tennant's sister) for a few years. They're still besties. :)

And once again I’m crying simply from watching your reaction to something, and not even the whole episode. But really, this episode gets me every time as well. It’s brilliant, and it’s a great character piece and the one-off characters are brilliant (and heartbreaking). Lots of great thoughts in your after-reaction discussion. And thank you for opening up about your history with Alzheimer’s, I can understand that being emotional. I’ve not had any family members go through that, but I’ve worked with people going through that and it’s always difficult, but I thought that this scene portrayed it really well, even if heartbreaking. Also sending hugs to you after this episode. Loving your Torchwood reactions and how much you’re loving the characters. They’re all pretty phenomenal.

When you watched the Goodbye Sarah Jane Smith episode and mentioned how you don’t like memory loss stuff after seeing Sarah Jane lose her memories, I now understand why it got to you. I’m sorry about your Grandfather. Very sad to hear that. This is definitely one of the best episodes for Torchwood in its early seasons. The story of three characters being lost in time and having to adapt to an era that they haven’t grown up or lived in is very compelling but interesting too. Emma was the only one to adapt and make a new life for herself. I like how you mentioned how it started in reverse with Emma struggling to adapt while Diane and John have a better start but they slowly struggle to cope. Although I feel Diane’s arc with Owen was slightly rushed and could have been developed more. But this is a solid story about people from a different era struggling to cope. The bonds they develop with Jack, Gwen and Owen are really captivating to watch too. Great reaction. I loved how you had a lot to say about this one. Very emotional and moving.

Great episode - great reaction. Heartbreaking stuff. What you should know about the final ep of series 1 and the first ep of series 2 (no spoilers - honest): - The ending leads into the Doctor Who episode "Utopia" and "Last of the Time Lords" leads into the start of series 2 of Torchwood. So the events in "Utopia", "The Sound of Drums" and "Last of the Time Lords" is basically what Captain Jack was doing between series 1 and 2 of Torchwood.

Why doesn't Owen tie his tie? I'm going on the assumption it was tied earlier in the evening and we only saw the end of their night out. Owen is used to playing and walking away without regard to his lover's feelings. It was good for someone to do that do him, ironically by someone who believes in meaningful relationships rather than casual ones. (I don't mean that like I'm glad it happened. I think he needed to experience that to grow as a person.) As for John Ellis meeting his son, all I have to say is fuck Alzheimer's. Yes, that one hits too close to home for me as well. My dad. Jack looking so heartbroken that he couldn't die with him was amazing. I think Emma will do well. She's young enough and seems adaptable enough (despite her difficulty coping at first) that she'll be able to adjust.

Sympathies and empathy Jess. Dementia and Alzheimers, not an easy subject to talk about. Being a carer, from experience, can overwhelmingly drain everything from you if somebody isn't there to step in. The only reason I could stop was that I ended up in hospital and, because no beds could be found in a care facility, my mother was placed in the next ward. I was completely exhausted and when, eventually, a bed was found, I just broke down. Still, after I was released from hospital, it was barely a fortnight's respite before I had to look after her for further months until a permanent place for her was found. That extra time virtually crippled me through lack of rest and sleep.

So yeah, season one did have this other really great episode, just after the first one I loved, Random Shoes. And it really still is sort of a one off, but it presents again, like the pilot did, the way this show is the intentional great complementary series to Doctor Who. This is a show where the aftermath of the fantastical alien things gets to be explored, Earth's own response to the big bad problems. With the Doctor, it's all managed in 45-90 minutes over a few hours or days of adventure. On Torchwood, it's LONG TERM problems and interesting damage. When they made fun of it in Voyage of the Damned (everyone leaves London at Christmas), on Torchwood they take these more disturbing longterm outcomes head on. This is the genius and the big dramatic potential of Torchwood. And when they play to that strength, with fantastically interesting and moving inevitable situations, this show really did rock so hard.

Gwen is presented as a flawed character. There is a difference between not being able to tell someone something and deciding to lie to them. She could tell Reese that her job requires her not to reveal some things to him and get him to understand. Instead she keeps lying which is unnecessarily dishonest. She also had an affair with Owen and kissed Jack on the lips to thank him which sends crossed signals to your new boss. I’m surprised you edited out your reaction to Diane’s reaction when she pulled the dress that Owen bought her out of the bag. Especially since the coloring is so close to your current theme.

Being a fully formed adult that has been in a number of relationships over the years, I never understood Gwen's decision not to share what she really does with Rhys. Of course, even as I write that I realize it's simply the chosen plot device. But it's not what I would have done, were I in her position.
@mayaenglish54243 жыл бұрын
To be fair, she's not allowed to. It's not her decision. Calling it a plot device is a little unfair considering there are real life parallels, if you work for a secret agency, you keep your mouth shut, even with your spouse. That being said, she could do a waaaaaaaaaaay better job lying truthfully. Like, Gwen, tell as much truth as you can without spilling the beans about Torchwood. She could have said "hey honey, I met this girl on the job and she really needs some help right now, can't tell you the specifics, thank you so much for understanding, love you" or whatever. The real problem is that she's cheating on Rhys and lying about everything, including things she doesn't need to lie about for her job, until lying becomes automatic for her.
@mayaenglish54243 жыл бұрын
@@CaesiusX I think other than the job secrecy thing, we agree that Gwen needs to get her shit together lol. In the Show, most people DON'T know about aliens. It's dismissed as mass hallucination or terrorism. They sometimes play it for laughs like when that old lady said "Bloody Torchwood" but by and large, people don't know about aliens through some timey-wimey plot conveniences that they explained in Doctor Who but I don't remember in enough detail to type out coherently in a youtube comment lol. Now, I'll acknowledge that the Torchwood team thoroughly sucks at stealth, but they are still a secret organization. (CoughCoughPizzadeliveryCoughCough) During WWII people lied their asses off to their spouses, not just about what their job entailed, but What their job actually Was. Code Breakers, spies, scientists working on the Manhattan project. People lie about what their job is if it's important enough. (I'm not saying It's healthy, I'm saying there's precedent) I do wish she'd follow your relationship advice though, poor Rhys. If she put the effort in to sort of "translate" her work into what Rhys thinks her job is (Anti-Terrorism?), then she could still talk to him a little bit. He's expecting some secrecy. The problem is she doesn't give him anything to work with. I do agree that people tend to respond to what isn't said as well as to what is. Usually when people single something out as a plot device they do so in a derogatory way so I did make an assumption. It is pretty funny when she get's indignant about other people keeping something from her, pot, kettle, much? I do love her but I want to shake her sometimes... I hope you're safe as well! Thank you for the nerd debate, I'm so bored! lol :)

*[Oops. Sorry, I was correcting something and deleted this comment in error.]* I see where you're coming from. And I think the problem with our miscommunication is that I didn't elaborate. But that's a problem with *all comments,* IMO.¹ I think we are in agreement, for the most part. In a situation like hers, as with any government asset with _top secret_ clearance, you're not keeping your _job_ a secret. You're allowed to say, _"I work here, but I can't tell you certain things."_ It is the difference between _that_ and *_completely misleading_* the person you love most. You're keeping *the secrets* secret. That's the difference that I was trying to talk about. IMO, that's what makes it a plot device.² Because she _can tell him_ *some* of what she's doing. They've had aliens in abundance in full view of the public. So it's not _that_ hush-hush. Specific details are certainly best kept secret. The name *Torchwood* _is known._ She can tell him she's working with *Torchwood* (and explain _roughly_ what it is they do), but she can't tell him the _details._ That is being as honest with your partner as you can be. Which is the primary point I was trying to make. Not the technical intricacies regarding work-related secrecy. But rather the honesty one should want to share with a partner, otherwise they are not your partner. Of course, that's _the best case scenario_ in real life. We'd have no drama without this stuff. When I say it's a plot point, like you said, it's also very much who *Gwen* is. She's not only secretive (and dishonest in other ways), she seems to make personal determinations as to _who needs to know what,_ because she feels it's what's best for them. Which makes it all the more humorous when she gets indignant when something has been kept from her. 😏 Be well. Stay safe.😷 ••✸•• *¹* ─ Oftentimes (but not to this degree in our situation) we tend to address _what wasn't said_ in comments. A seemingly arbitrary example would be if I left a comment in which I told people _"I put on my left shoe."_ I would get replies which may include, _"Why didn't you put on your right shoe as well?"_ When I hadn't said a thing, one way or the other, about my right shoe.🤷🏼♂️ *²* ─ Please don't misunderstand me. I do not believe _plot device_ is a dirty phrase.
@CaesiusX3 жыл бұрын
I hear you. 😄 You mentioned World War II. You're absolutely right, of course. One thing that has always astounded me, even saddened me, is how closed off people were, even to their own spouses. Not even those who _needed_ to be under the circumstances we were discussing. Just looking at how husbands and wives and parents and kids interacted just two generations back. I imagine it still happens in households all over, of course (those fortunate enough to have both parents in their lives). But the *evolution* of interpersonal relations is one that I am so happy to see. When I look back, I find it rather heartbreaking. It certainly wasn't the case for _everyone._ But it seemed the majority. As an exception, I look at one of the films about *Ruth Bader Ginsburg,* and see how her husband is portrayed. It just seems so _modern._ But I imagine there were a number of relationships that were truly loving and *_supportive._* There had to have been. But there were also those which had the husband hanging out at the lodge with the other husbands. Or wives with their corresponding social club. Getting from their peers what they couldn't get from their partners. Bonding with you're given sex likely provides a legitimate sociological benefit, and perhaps even a psychologically benefit. I imagine there are needs met through that which might not be available otherwise. But it was also an example of the way men and women viewed one another and interacted. My parents, thankfully, showed me what a true partnership was. And even they both had previous marriages with kids from each, before I came along. And myself, just starting into my 50s, with a previous marriage (from when I was way too young resulting in a beautiful daughter now in her 30s), feel like I'm only _just now_ finding what _real Love_ is with my fiancé. But of course it required experiencing all which came before. The good and the bad. OMG, you were talking about boredom? 🤦🏼♂️ Look at me babble on! 😯 Good grief, did I ever digress! So, yeah. . . _poor _*_Rhys._* 🤪

Drink and cry? Not a fan, I'm more of a smoke and giggle type of person, Life is usually absurd, laughter is the best note of defiance. Owen gets some real emotional growth this episode.

No solutions and no villain, refreshing, that's why they need to bring this show back, it was willing to take chances. (my edit button doesn't work)

This is one of my all-time favourite episodes of Torchwood. Louise Delamere in that red dress has nothing to do with it at all. Nope. Note one little bit. 🤨
