This is a man who has not missed a beat… 🙏🏽 *His voice on his instruments creates dual worlds of swing & soulful introspection…* 💫🔭 Tonight’s performance is the first time that we’ve welcomed the flute to the living room stage. *Lew astounds us with his warmth & pristine articulation* …achieving a quality of sound that seemingly cleanses karma & consciousness. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ *Bless you, Lew. You’re a luminary, indeed.* 🔥🙌🏽❤‍🔥 As an inspiration to his original composition, “Chasing the Carrot,” Lew reflects on a philosopher’s insight he encountered as a child: “The human condition is that you can’t win, but you can try.” 💡 Suspend any defeatist outlook, *& allow this to offer a lens of liberation* 🤔 - freeing us from the expectations of an ultimate, elusive target (i.e. the perfect solo, chord, lick, etc.). *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ It seems as if we’re ‘chasing the carrot’ in all dimensions of life….rushing from one season & desire, to the next. 🌎🥕 ( -even the laws of physics affirm that the Universe is in an infinite state of expansion . . . always ‘reaching for more.’ ) 🙌🏽 *However, we’re here to enjoy this ride of Life as the best possible orchestrators of our journey…* It’s never about perfection, & it is rarely about the destination. - such things are of little consequence in a world of constant change. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ I believe that this is why Lew swings as profoundly as he does: *His tone is beautifully intentional - in service of the present moment.* 🎯 A true ‘win’ in life is to embrace the infinite ways that we can enhance the time & space we’re *currently* in. 🏆🙏🏽 *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ This evening we celebrate the wins & the memory of a remarkable man who served our community as a *life-changing musician, educator & orchestrator…* *Prof. Ronald Carter,* the father of Bryan Carter - drummer, award-winning arranger, & a longtime friend of Emmet’s Place. We cover the family with our urgent prayers. We aim to honor the Carter legacy by *bringing this music to new heights of transcendence, to new generations.* 🤍🎶 *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Every day is our gift to swing. 🎼🙏🏼🙌🏽 *Let us not chase, but take charge of what is already upon us.* Thank you, Lew, Emmet, & fellow cats for making this music a living reality for all of us.

Oh Meira, so glad to have you back again. I really get so much more from being able to find all those lesser-known jazz standards and things hiding in more distant corners of the Great American Song Book which is what your song list makes possible. I admire your thorough academic discipline with all the names and the way you take jazz seriously. Keep it up please! ' We're all so grateful.😃

Thanks for the list, Meira. But the first track is 'Afternoon in Paris' (John Lewis), not 'What Am I Here For?' Thanks again.

Gentlemen, I appreciate your messages a great deal - Will, from the UK!: *Thank you very much for your words, my friend* …this is a labor of love & I pour my focused intention towards each performance 🙏🏽 Knowing that this benefits our community blesses my being. -(I experience this music & my love for science as two outpourings of the same Life Source! 🙌🏽) Lew confirms this even more when we hear the technicality & spirituality of his sound, unite in full expression 🙌🏼🌎 Pascal: Your correction is most *welcomed* …Afternoon in Paris… *oui en effet!* Yes, John Lewis…MJQ royalty, & I esp. hear the recording by Phineas!! - (although it’s not Duke’s “What Am I Here For?” in my mind I hear an incredible mash-up/ medley of the two songs…anyone hear it?) If anyone could achieve it, I know it would be Lew & EC 🎯🙌🏽 🤔💡 I’m passionate for accuracy, (*but if we’re not making mistakes, we’re simply not learning!*) I’m grateful for the shared knowledge of our community. This is a deep volume of music to account for, & I truly *love* how we keep things swinging & respectfully enlighten each other. ♥️…Love to you ALL, and to these cats…thanks again.

Oh my goodness. I came upon this by chance, and couldn’t stop watching and listening! I saw Lew Tabackin some 40 years ago in a tiny club in Arcata, CA with Billy Higgins and Charlie Haden, and he still knocks me out playing with these young cats at the age of 83. He’s a force of nature.

Yes. First heard him in a Tom Waits album, late 70s. Awesome. Later in a jazz environment with his wife and also his own band. Always very impressive, laid back. Great addition to the Emmett C. Library!

Lew is great! Long story...tooooo long...but Lew took me under wing during one of the darkest periods in my life in 1973...and invited me into trombone section of the band (The Toshiko Akiyoshi - Lew Tabackin Big Band)...it made a big difference in my coming to my senses. I am still grateful to this day!

Wow, what a treat to see Lew Tabackin in a small setting! First heard him about 40 years ago when I acquired a Road Time Shuffle promo album featuring the iconic big band he co-led with his wife Toshiko Akiyoshi. One of the tightest bands still to this day.

I've been looking forward to seeing Lew at Emmet's, and oh boy, he didn't disappoint! He's lost nothing over the years. I saw him back in the '90s at a well known London jazz club, a british tenor player completed the front line, and Lew's sound was so huge, he didn't need to use the mike. Everytime Lew took a solo, the british guy just stood there with his mouth open, shaking his head in disbelief. Lew went on to tell us about his jazz hero, Don Byas, and even played a number in the exact style of Don Byas. A great evening then, and a great one at Emmet's! Thanks Emmet!

What a pleasant surprise this popped up on my feed. I think Desert Lady was played on my local jazz station (KLON) out of Long Beach when I was going to school there. I went out and picked up that CD and have listened to it a thousand times. Love that haunting flute work on that album.

When Lew came through Denver in 1994 he was in a very bad mood because he couldn't smoke in the club (no smoking policy due to the recent passing of Bruno Carr) ... I was a high schooler then and, being a student of Bill Goodwin, I was invited to sit in, and despite Lew being very grumpy he was so generous and kind to me ... I was freaked out lol! He really calmed me down it was amazing.

Emmet, I’m truly a fan. I discovered your channel while flipping through Wes Montgomery and Joe Pass vids. I had subscribed maybe a few weeks ago and am just now getting into your live steaming😊I hope I’m not out of pocket for asking this but what cameras are you using? I’ve been wanting streaming cameras that give the nice faded background(I would prefer an organic fade over a digital one) without using full DSLRs if possible. If you don’t answer I totally understand as it’s a bit off topic. I promise won’t unsubscribe😊 keep up the great work my dude!

Tonight’s performance with Lew Tabackin was *phenomenal* & we really dig you joining us…there’s a *treasure* of moments on this channel from nearly 4yrs (wow 🤯) of faithfully swinging through the highs & lows of the pandemic 🙏🏽💯 …we’re so grateful to still be swingin’ hard 🙏🏽♥️

Why do I hear some boos during introduction of Nakamura? That shouldn’t happen for any reason especially after his solo rudely cut short by the guy. This is some sickening stuff. Even though Cohen was extra nice to Nakamura, he should control his rude audience better. It’s on KZbin.
@Joe-yi8xj
@Joe-yi8xj 4 ай бұрын
Those aren't boos. Those are encouraging shouts. You heard wrong. And his solo wasn't cut short by anyone. He was finished and indicated so. Lew has hired Yasushi many times. There is no ill will there. Nor is there from the audience

If you wrote this without it, it means you either you don’t know that things like this happens or you have a habit of speaking for someone without consultations. Let it be a lesson for you. @@Joe-yi8xj I just feel sorry for nakamura. I raised a concern that his solo seemed interrupted and someone deny for him as if it was a fact. I recently told my five year old not to do it for the rudeness of it. You really make it look like it’s a norm for you.
@tizmon
@tizmon 4 ай бұрын
@@Joe-yi8xj let me write why I feel sorry for nakamura because I’m sure you have no idea. You denied what I was concerned about like you know it for the fact because you don’t care what nakarura thinks. You try to look like someone presenting pleasent atmosphere of the shoot at a cost of completely marginalizing nakamura. If not, you would have expressed your opinion as such. You didn’t do that because you are hypocrite who has no regards others who you think are less of. You’ve been doing this your entire life and that’s the reason you replied the way you did. Because you speak for others when you can’t and people around you been reacting to that all your life. You do it because you have no idea how people hate that and effects it has on your life.
@tizmon
@tizmon 4 ай бұрын
@@Joe-yi8xj I just realized. There is a possibility that you don’t know what is an interruption means. Like so many of the problems in the world, you might have denied something without knowing what it is. The interruption you definitively have denied occurring can only have occurred only if nakamura felt so. I bet this was the case. A lot of people finish their lives without knowing the most fundamental of things, and unfortunately they often misunderstand they know more. I bet this is the case.
