Emma, I recently read two books by the Australian author Charlotte McConaghy, called Migrations and Once There Were Wolves. I really liked them, especially Once There Were Wolves. She cares a lot about nature, animals, the environment, and she delves a lot on trauma as well. Her books are set in remote places like Greenland and the Scotland forests

The Ladies Paradise is one of those works which I think is better for its *message* than its quality. The prose is brilliant, and his heart is in the right place regarding his distaste for capitalism + consumerism, but I think he gets a bit muddled thematically and the characters are really not well drawn or developed. It's interesting as a prototype piece of anti-capitalist literature, and I think there's a lot in there which others have subsequently dealt with a lot better - especially regarding the intersection of capitalism/gender/sex/the female body. It's interesting that you like Denise, I got sick of her eventually lmao she's essentially a character from a wattpad fanfic from 2011, so 'not like other girls' that Mouret can't help but fall in love with her, and the innocence/virginity thing is dated to say the least. The book sits in a weird space where I think it's not a great novel but nevertheless very worth reading.
