Emma, have you ever made a video on how you split up your time - especially during very heavy schoolwork intensive weeks - so that you are able to record, edit, READ READ READ, but also not fall behind in your classes? Some of the books you read are not a walk in the park, and yet, you do a stupendous job of describing them with the same attention as the "easier" books.

My favorite book of the month was The Handmaid's Tale. If I'm perfectly honest, I did not expect to enjoy it. In the past I have read fantasy pretty much exclusively, and this was also an assigned read. I ended up loving it because of the writing and the characters I think. Or maybe I just finally got passed my "I only like fantasy thing"

February is an easier month to pick a favorite book! Nothing I read was bad by any means but my favorite is just a standout - All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. It's just absolutely perfect in its imagery and storytelling, and very timely when you think about unexpected circumstances and the pandemic. A close second is Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi. It did have some repetitive moments throughout, but the feeling I got while reading this book did everything that I wanted it to do. I really want to get more into Japanese literature that isn't related to war time or history and this hit that mark perfectly

Gosh, listening to you talk about the essays you're writing really makes me miss university. I miss engaging with my reading on such a deep level. I found booktube in an effort to recapture that, but it's hard when people don't go far beyond "I liked it/I didn't like it." Anyway, I tried to read only black authors this past month. My favorite was Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi. It was really excellent, although I cried. The meditations on religion versus science, on the nature of addiction and depression, and on our approach to shame really spoke to me. It was a great book.

I only read two books in February, but of those, my favorite was "Trigger Warning" by Neil Gaiman. It's a collection of short fiction, poetry, and fanfiction and I really enjoyed it! Gaiman was hit or miss for me for a really long time, but I've come around to really appreciating his work. I don't love short fiction as a whole, but I enjoyed getting to look into what is in essence a sandbox for him; somewhere that he can play and experiment without committing to a whole novel in a certain style. Weirdly, it also set me up to read the novella, "Nothing But Blackened Teeth" by Cassandra Khaw. Sort-of serendipitous that the final story in "Trigger Warning" should cover the topic of Hitobashira and introduce me to the concept, for me to then read a whole novella about the same thing by accident. I love that!

It was 3 star read for me as well, and I really felt like I was the only one. Everyone else that I have heard talk about this book loved it. Like you, I really enjoyed the story, but strongly disliked the execution of it. I agree that it could have been a lot shorter. I usually love slow paced books, I love really getting to know the characters and the world, but I struggled with this one. I kind of felt like nothing really happened for about the first 75% of the book, and I didn't feel anymore connected to the characters, or the world, for all the lack of action. It wasn't horrible by any means, but definitely not my cup of tea. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one that didn't "love" it.

My favourite book this month was actually a nonfiction - Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Absolutely loved being immersed in nature for a while in such a beautiful way that it made me tear up several times purely from the writing lol. But 5/5 read, would 100% recommend especially to people who want to connect to nature or want to view nature in a new way that feels like a warm hug. It was also just a really interesting and unique perspective blending native american culture and teachings with modern western science and ecology, and also gave a really intriguing comparison between the relationship that native american people have with nature (which is very much humans are a part of nature and belong to nature) vs. western people's relationship with nature (in which humans are very much above or at least outside of nature). Ah I just loved it and already want to read it again

I'm brazilian and you just motivated me to read The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas. I gave up with The Alienist cause I just was not getting it. It's my first language but i still think i miss a lot while reading Machado's stories. but I do love The Chapter on Hats, A Lady (i don't know if this is the translation, but the story of a lady who does not want to age), The Mirror and The Devil's Church. I read Dom Casmurro too and I like it, but I think I will enjoy it more by the time I read it for the third or fourth time. At the first read I know what the book is about. The second read i pay attention to details about Capitu and Bento's relationship. The third read I hope I''l just read it cause I miss the story and I want to spend some time with them. Fun fact about Machado's books in Brasil: We have a very lame education system so most brazilian people have never read it fully cause the language is very pompous and we kind of don't read national classics spontaneously. We are all forced to read Machado's at a very young and immature age, so we all know what the book is about, actually we are very up to these characters and the themes and the story. It's ike they are our neighbors. Dom Casmurro is more popular here. A lot of people take an effort to read Dom Casmurro.

My top read of the month was The Books of Jacob by Olga Torcarczuk - a 960 page beast. It was absolutely incredible - Polish (and surrounding countries) historical fiction about the rise and fall of a messianic figure is the best way to describe it, but there's so much and it's so perfectly written. Jennifer Croft translated it into English and did a phenomenal job. I missed it the day after I finished it because I'd gotten so engrossed in the world.

Emma, it is currently a bit of a rough time here where I live, with LOTS of torrential rain and flooding in my city, so I have been pretty much locked in my house for days, so this is a dose of DELIGHT. In fact, your videos are something I look forward to in my week - a real highlight and always puts a smile on my face when I see a lovely bookish video from you! I'm excited to watch it tomorrow morning =)

Can I recommend ice planet barbarians on KU? I think it’s decently written and you got the spice level and some plot. And basically I just like them as platte cleanser

Emma I don't know how but your videos always cheer me up and makes me want to read a million books at the same time! I love your content and I am hoping your going to do an Agatha vs Emma soon!
